This charming B&B is run by a real-life sea captain who has opened up his 1800s-era, antiques-filled home to guests. The property's setting is really amazing -- at the very end of a narrow road, next to a grassy field and a small harbor full of sailboats. We were glad to stay in quaint South Freeport, a fishing village, and away from the commercial hustle of Freeport a couple of miles away.

Captain Tom is a throwback to another era when it comes to technology. He does not own a computer (which probably explains why I couldn't find a website for his B&B), and one of the times I called, he didn't seem to have an answering machine either (or it wasn't working). But he is as nice and hospitable as can be, and he made us feel really welcome. Because of severe flight delays, my husband and I arrived in the middle of the night. No problem. The captain graciously left the lights on for us downstairs and left hand-written instructions on how to find our way around.

Our room, "The Glen," was the smallest of the three rooms at the B&B. It had a queen bed and was immaculately clean. Our private bath was next door, with a hallway entrance.

I woke up to the wonderful aroma of baking. Captain Tom was in the kitchen, making muffins from scratch. He also made some sort of fancy egg dish topped with lobster that he caught the day before. Delicious!

The best room, at the end of the hall, has two beds, a balcony and amazing views. It is perfect for a small family.
