We were booked into the South Portland Howard Johnson for 3 nights for a girls shopping weekend via Priceline.
I was a little nervous about staying at this hotel but was pleasantly surprised to find our 2nd room spacious, updated (except the bathroom), clean (though you could see something had been spilled on the walls at some point) and well equipped with 2 sinks and a flat screen TV. We were very pleased with the room until.....
It started pouring rain through the night and when we came back from the free continental breakfast (was okay, a larger selection of fruit would have been nice and it was very hot & stuffy in the breakfast room) I could hear a dripping sound. I thought maybe the AC unit was dripping (even though the AC wasn't on) and opened the sheers to find rain water pouring in from above the window! So we asked to be moved - the only rooms available were on the 4th floor which was fine.
Unfortunately we got up to our room and were not so impressed as with the first room....we actually considered living with the leaking windows since it had now stopped raining! The 4th floor room was non-smoking but smelled of old smoke, the beds were not nearly as comfortable, the TV was an old tube TV, the hairdryer did not work and worst of all - the noise was terrible! Kids running up and down the hallways and we could here the people below us, I assume, talking through the AC unit!
Now - I know the kids running and yelling down the hallways do not really reflect on the hotel and the front desk staff member seemed genuinely concerned about this but it never stopped. I asked her if we could have yet another room and she said she could upgrade us to a business class room on the 3rd floor. GREAT! So I went up to our room and we packed all our stuff...again. Went down to get the new keys and she said she had made a mistake and couldn't upgrade us after all but she could move us to the 1st floor to the older section of the hotel. I didn't want to risk an even older room than what we had been moved to so we suffered through the rowdy kids.
Now, I truly believe that she was going to upgrade us until she saw that we had pre-paid using Priceline. For what we paid for the room(s), still more than I usually pay for Priceline rooms, the hotel was OK but hearing people calling to reserve and that the room rate was $129 or $116 with AAA, it is definitely not worth that price. It was kind of disheartening that we packed up all our stuff AGAIN only to have to unpack, again, in the same crumby, noisy room.
Also, when we returned for the evening one night around 9pm all the dirty towels were still in piles along the hallway outside each room. Kind of gross.
Location is not great for shopping but it's only an extra 5 minute drive or so, so not too bad. If we were able to stay in our original room, minus the flooding, we would have been raving about this hotel! It's unfortunate that what started off great quickly went down hill. I gave it an average rating because it had the potential to be good to very good.
