“Quiet getaway”
Reviewed 2 January 2012

My wife and I along with our daughter and her husband stayed in the cottage nearest the water. Accomodations are simple but adequate, with a bedroom, a loft, a bathroom with shower, living room, dining area, and kitchen. Great view of the water just a few steps away. We didn't hear another soul the entire time there, and it served as a nice launching pad for day outings. We have not stayed in the hotel proper, so I can't compare the the accomodations there, but we couldn't have been happier with our stay. There was a small fireplace and a very capable wall heater with good temperature control. The kitchen is quite small but adequate for simple endeavors like breakfast.

Room Tip: Cottages near the water are quiet and offer a nice bit of privacy.

The wonderful management at the Claremont creates a welcome environment that brings us back, year after year, to this charming historic spot. Rooms are romantic and very comfortable. Location and views are breathtaking. Love the croquet, of course!

The Claremont has been our East Coast vacation home for the last 17 years. It's a long flight AND a long drive from CA but even when we say it will be our last year, it never is. Many friends have joined us, and have also fallen in love with the charm, the history, the incredible location and the friendly helpful management. The main building is beautiful but we love the W cottages with their view of it, the lawn, and the Sound.

Room Tip: We love Cottage W-4 for the location, two bedrooms and kitchen But beware the tiny bathroom. It als...

A long drive from Montreal, it was a relief to arrive here. Outstanding location. The bay view from our room and large balcony was a real pleasure. Impeccable room, well equipped. The restaurant, tough lead by a small team, was a great surprise. Although you can dine in Southwest harbour or Bar Harbor, we had all our meals there. All seafood dishes were outstanding. The wine list is very well priced. Acadia park is a short drive away. Really worth the price.

We have stayed here twice and will likely return next summer. This is an 1883 hotel that has been carefully restored and preserved, with an elegant restaurant added. It can be a little precious, what with the croquet courts and tournament, but that affectation is merely charming in this place.

The summer staff, aside from managers, is largely Eastern European young people in Maine for the summer. That can make for some interesting communication opportunities, but they are uniformly charming and helpful. You will find young people from Eastern Europe all over. We found some working behind the sandwich counter at Gott's store on the way to Bass Harbor (great whoopie pies there).

My family used to vacation in the area fifty years ago so it was a pleasure to return. I was pleased to learn that my good friend's parents had met when his mother rode up on her bicycle to deliver eggs at the Clarmont where his family was staying, as they did each summer, for a month at the Claremont. That would have been in the 1920's. Lovely to have that bit of history. And I'm sure the hotel looked much the same.

We would also recomment two local restaurants: Red Sky and Fiddler's Green. Both very fine.

Room Tip: Try to get an ocean side room: they are quieter. Also, the Phillips House is a good and quieter plac...

We stayed in the main hotel toward the end of the season so it is presumed the following will be corrected next year: room glasses not refreshed daily, pealing paint, dirty behind the bathroom door, dead mosquitos on the window shelve in the dining room, employees walking down the hall at 3am and exiting through the emergency stairwell doors (slam) and paint on the window screens in the main area. Pristine views.

The Claremont is all its website promises -- beautiful location in the heart of the Acadia National Park area. We stayed three nights earlier this month in the cabin "Wentwood 3." The cabin is clean, comfortable, spacious enough, and boasts gorgious, unobstructed views of Somes Sound. It has a deck with cafe table and lounge chairs within feet of the water; great place for breakfast or stargazing if the Maine weather cooperates. Its done up in lots of knotty pine and a la LL Bean furnishings; bed is very comfortable. Kitchen and bath areas area bit tired, but not enough to be worrisome; wood burning fireplace and they supply the wood. Bring a flashlight -- or don't forget to grab the one supplied in the cabin -- you are in the woods for the short walk from the parking area to the cabin.

We did not eat at the restaurant but enjoyed a drink on the hotel's lovely veranda -- complete with rocking chairs, of course. Our only disapointment was the only place to have a drink on the property this time of year is the hotel bar which doesn't open until around 5:30 pm.

The hotel staff was uniformly welcoming and helpful.

We ate two nights in the village of Southeast harbor and had a good experience at both places; particularly good food and service at the Fiddler's Green and good food followed by fun live music at Sipps.

Acadia National Park is fabulously beautiful. See as much of it as you can.

Room Tip: We like the cabins because they have full kitchens and therefore allow a lot of mealtime flexibility...
