“Continually wonderful”
Reviewed 26 June 2012

This is our third stay at The Claremont. Each has been deeply satisfying, quiet and calming. Our room, the same for the last two years, overlooks Somes Sound. The are boating sounds from time to time--the chug of working lobster boats, the occasional power pleasure boar, and the silent passage of sailing craft.

The breakfast room is sunny yellow, overlooks the water and is staffed by cheerful young staff many from Eastern Europe. We have had charming wait staff each year. The food is always plentiful and excellent. The 'full breakfast' is everything offered for breakfast on your own plate--eggs, sausage, pancakes, etc, hearty and tasty. Plus a cold buffet of pastry, cereal and fruit. The strawberries this year were thrilling.

Coffee is out in the lobby by 6am for the early risers like us which provides a nice easy awakening: go fetch coffee, return to bed and read quietly until breakfast; couple with the sound of the harbor waking up and you have something nearing perfection.

Room Tip: Water view. Try the Phillips House rooms.

We visited the Claremont in August of 2009. The property is amazing. There is a view of the water right behind the property that is gorgeous. The rooms were clean and the service was great. The only two drawbacks were:

1. The bathroom was TINY. Though private, it is really too small for even an average-sized person to maneuver themselves in it.

2. The location is a bit far from downtown (about 30 minutes). Late at night, it was a tough journey to make all the way back to the hotel.

Overall, this is a must visit place. But if you're looking for more nightlife, I would suggest staying somewhere closer to Bar Harbor proper.

Croquet made this so fun, the setting is peaceful and serene. Tennis courts and small boats also available to use. The dock is a great place to relax and boat watch. Staff was very helpful and free breakfast was good, coffee especially! We stayed over the 4th of July and it was a welcome calm compared to bustling Bar Harbor. Large guest rooms and a very shabby chic feel in the room decor.

Room Tip: Definitely want a water view room to enjoy the harbor!

My wife and I along with our daughter and her husband stayed in the cottage nearest the water. Accomodations are simple but adequate, with a bedroom, a loft, a bathroom with shower, living room, dining area, and kitchen. Great view of the water just a few steps away. We didn't hear another soul the entire time there, and it served as a nice launching pad for day outings. We have not stayed in the hotel proper, so I can't compare the the accomodations there, but we couldn't have been happier with our stay. There was a small fireplace and a very capable wall heater with good temperature control. The kitchen is quite small but adequate for simple endeavors like breakfast.

Room Tip: Cottages near the water are quiet and offer a nice bit of privacy.

The wonderful management at the Claremont creates a welcome environment that brings us back, year after year, to this charming historic spot. Rooms are romantic and very comfortable. Location and views are breathtaking. Love the croquet, of course!

The Claremont has been our East Coast vacation home for the last 17 years. It's a long flight AND a long drive from CA but even when we say it will be our last year, it never is. Many friends have joined us, and have also fallen in love with the charm, the history, the incredible location and the friendly helpful management. The main building is beautiful but we love the W cottages with their view of it, the lawn, and the Sound.

Room Tip: We love Cottage W-4 for the location, two bedrooms and kitchen But beware the tiny bathroom. It als...

A long drive from Montreal, it was a relief to arrive here. Outstanding location. The bay view from our room and large balcony was a real pleasure. Impeccable room, well equipped. The restaurant, tough lead by a small team, was a great surprise. Although you can dine in Southwest harbour or Bar Harbor, we had all our meals there. All seafood dishes were outstanding. The wine list is very well priced. Acadia park is a short drive away. Really worth the price.
