The Claremont Hotel

They just don't make them like this anymore...The Inn is simple and classic, clean and lovely. We have been here many times and are never disappointed. It is not a "hotel", so do not stay here if that is what you are looking for, but instead a charming Inn overlooking the sea, with tea served in the afternoon, cocktails at 5pm at the boathouse below. Certainly civilized. It is a bit like your summer stay on the coast as a child, if you were lucky enough to do that. If not, you should experience this.

Staying in the Claremont is a trip back in time to a gentler, more civilized age. If you're receptive, the magnificent views and quiet elegance are spell-binding.

Guests seem to resonate with the ambience, becoming gentler and kinder themselves. Or, maybe the Claremont just attracts those kinds of people. I didn't hear a single argument, complaint or loud cell phone conversation over the relaxing sounds of croquet balls, wind and boats.

This is not the place to come if you want the conveniences and extras of a modern luxury hotel. The rooms are not air conditioned, they have no TVs and the bathrooms are European tiny. Air conditioning is rarely needed, though, in this locale. Although there were unusually high daytime temperatures (80's) on two days or our stay, our room was always pleasant from dusk to mid morning and a large floor fan was provided.

Service was impeccable. Very professional staff members gave us great suggestions for things to see and do and generally treated us like royalty.

We chose a room in the Phillips House, which is only a few steps from the main hotel building. The Phillips House has its own porch facing the water and a pleasant common living room with a wood fireplace. The bathrooms are supposedly a little larger and newer.

Kudos to the Claremont’s owners and staff for keeping this Victorian gem alive and fresh!

I was looking for a weekend getaway place and found the Claremont Hotel in Southwest Harbor, ME. We stayed in the main hotel and had a great room and excellent breakfast. The location was great, more laid back than Bar Harbor and easier to get into town, the water, etc. The Croquet courts were beautiful!

Room Tip: Water view rooms obviously have the great view, but the corner rooms (114, 200) have great cross ven...

We stayed in cottage C-4 South for three nights this week. Although the cottage had a limited view, the deck was still lovely and the setting was quiet. The other side of the cottage (C-4 North) had another family, but we never heard them and only saw them when we got in our car to leave in the morning. When I booked this cottage (only one available), I was concerned that there was another side to it with other renters, but it was a needless worry. The Claremont property is lovely and the setting is gorgeous. The hotel has a very old-timey feel--Victorian furnishings, rockers on the porch, different sitting rooms (chess set, books, puzzles, etc.) all with wonderful views. The cottage was very well maintained and had a rustic vibe (big plaid sofa, LL Bean style to furnishings). Small galley kitchen, nice modern bathroom, basic bedrooms (twin beds for the kids room and Queen for the "master")--sparsely furnished BUT...super comfortable beds with awesome sheets (great thread count)! I was so happy we chose to stay in Southwest Harbor because it was much, much, more peaceful then Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor was pretty, but also came across like a stressful tourist trap on steroids. A great place to go to grab a meal, walk along the harbor and get the heck out! Then, back to the Claremont and to quote Seinfeld "Serenity Now!" It was especially nice to have room in the cabin since we're a family of four one hotel room doesn't cut it for us. I was also happy there wasn't a tv, so we played board and card games and had much more fun. The shops in the little town of Southwest Harbor pretty much all close by 5, but the ice cream place and restaurants are all open at night The best meal we had was at the Dry Dock (thumbs up all around!) So, back to Claremont--the cottages are great for families or those who want more space. Can't rate the hotel rooms because we never saw any, but the hotel property itself was picture perfect--croquet courts, tennis courts, dock out on harbor. The last morning we were there a mother deer and her baby walked around the rocky beach munching wildflowers by the side of the hotel's property! Sea Kayaking tour place that's right in Southwest Harbor (2 mins from Claremont) was a great activity for the whole family--4 hour tour--we saw seals, bald eagles, etc. Claremont's location was far enough from the hustle/bustle of Bar Harbor, but not so far that it was inconvenient to go there or anywhere else in Acadia (everything we did was within a 15 minute drive, hiked Cadillac mountain one day, walked carriage trails around Eagle Lake another, etc.) All employees at Claremont were very helpful and cordial. Loved it there! Thanks!!!!

Room Tip: Book a cottage! They are worth it!

I loved this hotel! The view and grounds are amazing. We also enjoyed a jazz concert on a Saturday night (check their schedule for more concerts which are free for guests). The blueberry mojitos on the dock are delicious (but a bit pricey). Oh, and the breakfast is huge.

The Claremont Hotel is a charming hotel that is 130 years old, but in excellent shape.Ownership has put allot of money into the hotel which shows. The rooms are very nice and the fresh flowers add a nice addition to the rooms. The setting is magnificent and the grounds are manicured. The 2 croquet courts are very nice. There is a nice small lunch restaurant near their small pier.Service is outstanding and the staff is ver accommodating. The breakfast is very nice in a lovely dining room.Great small bar. We will return. Be aware that their is no ac, but the rooms have a nice big fan and the nights are cool.

Room Tip: Corner king bedroom.

Enthusiastic recommendation! This is an elegant but unpretentious place to stay on the quiet side of MDI. Beautiful views of Soames Sound, spacious porches and living rooms, friendly service. It's a delightful haven of tranquility if you're on the go during the day, whether hiking, out on the water, shopping in Northeast, or whatever. We've been in the same small cottage (one bedroom, living room, galley kitchen, fireplace, Wi-fi, deck) for over a decade and suggest you carefully consider a cottage versus a room.

One way of capturing the Claremont's ambience is that they don't have a fitness center, they have rowboats and a tennis court. And three croquet courts....

Again, a high recommendation for the beauty and simple elegance of this place. You can also see my separate review of the excellent restaurant.
