The hotel is an ancient masterpiece. A trip back in time. But the accommodations are up to date. Beautiful rooms, clean bathrooms, elevator, strong WiFi. The setting is great. Right by a quiet bay. And the included breakfast, though not luxurious is still very good. A buffet as well as a free, fresh dish to order.

The Claremont is a gorgeous historic hotel, spectacularly sited at the mouth of Somes Sound and boasting an inviting wrap around porch, lush grounds and pretty rooms filled with antiques. The hotel has a library, games and world class croquet courts available to guests. It is a treasure, and my husband and I enjoyed a wonderful stay over July 4th weekend in 2008 during which everything, including the food and service, was excellent.

My family has also enjoyed many happy evenings as patrons of its Xanthus Restaurant for annual "special occasion" dinners that began in 1981 and continue to this day. We also have enjoyed many lunches and cocktails at the hotel's dockside bar, which was beautifully renovated this year.

The food at the restaurant and dock is always wonderful, featuring local seafood and vegetables. But in recent years, the service during the peak month of July, has become painfully slow, extending a 3 course dinner to 3+ hours, with overly long gaps waiting for drinks and courses. Our experience at the dock bar this year was similarly slow. In addition, for the past several years, attempts to order standard cocktails failed, with approximations or off ingredients arriving after an overly long wait. (A whiskey sour this year featured a smokey scotch and straight lemon juice, a manhattan featured grenadine).

The problem appears to be a reluctance to hire sufficiently qualified staff at the bar and in the dining areas. On Saturday, July 5, 2014, with an almost full dining room at dinner, there were just two experienced waitresses, and several pleasant support summer staff who had limited English. A dining room "hostess" who patrolled the tables did not help expedite the service. Following a long wait for a dessert, a waitress told us, apologetically, that they were "still training the staff" - on a prime holiday weekend.

As loyal patrons who have vacationed on the island for over 35 years, we are reluctant to abandon our traditional Claremont dinner. But, as you can read in the other reviews, there are many good restaurants in Southwest Harbor - maybe next year we'll give Red Sky a try?

Its a shame that such a wonderful hotel has this blind spot; the Claremont should be more than just another "hotel restaurant."

This beautiful hotel is located in Southwest Harbor. It sits on an imposing location overlooking the harbor. The pubic rooms are delightful warm and inviting. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The dining room has beautiful views overlooking the harbor.the wide porch has plenty of rocking chairs and there is a croquet court in the back lawn....two tennis courts are in the front, and there are row boats on the dock you can sign out.
The rooms are clean and well kept. Our bedroom had a huge bathroom and the linens are all very nice.
This is a great place to stay and enjoy all the hotel has to offer. A Fun destination hotel!

Room Tip: If you are arriving in July or August tke a room on the 1st or 2 nd floor. There is no air....only...

A beautiful, old lodge. Great views off the porch or our room windows of the harbor. Restuarant was excellent. Perfect place to unwind, enjoy the view and visit Acadia National Park. Or drive for a day in Bar a Harbor. Also popular to ocean kayak.

This charming historic hotel overlooking the ocean is one of our favorites when visiting Maine. The staff is friendly and helpful. Their breakfast and dinners are delicious in an elegant setting. The croquet field in the front and the turn of the century architecture makes you feel you are in an James-Ivory movie. Rooms are tastefully furnished and absence of a TV but an efficient Wi-Fi was much welcome.
The location is perfect to visit the Acadia National Park and enjoying the nearby Maine towns.
We can't wait to go back.

We stayed for six nights in a cottage (known as W2). The purpose of our trip was to hike in Acadia National Park. The cottage has an excellent view of Somes Sound from the interior and from the deck. We only prepared breakfast in the cottage, preferring to dine in nearby restaurants. (Our favourite is Red Sky, a pleasant 15 minute walk from the hotel.) We would have tried Xanthus, the hotel's restaurant, but it has a dress code, something we abhor while on vacation. I cannot comment on the hotel and its rooms (and related services) since we did not venture inside other than to check-in and check-out. The grounds surrounding the hotel are beautiful and very well maintained. The cottage was fine although one should not expect it to be a luxurious high-end experience. I am very pleased to report there's no TV and no barbecue. One is not plagued by neighbours catching up on Judge Judy and yelps when hot grease from the barbecue lands on bare skin. Free wi-fi is provided.
