A perfect sail on a hot but windy day brought our group of 6 onto the Alice E. This historic Friendship Sloop built in 1899 is like taking a scenic sailing time travel vessel around the scenic waters around MDI. Owner and Captain Karl is gracious and earnest, sharing stories and inviting participation in hoisting the sails if you are interested. We enjoyed seeing seals, birds and dramatic scenery as well as some seriously fun sailing. Don't miss this experience of Downeaster Maine.

To start the beauty that abounds the Mt Desert Island is AWESOME! How can it get BETTER? Take a sail on the friendship sloop the "Helen Brooks" with Capt'n Karl....First you embark out of Southwest Harbor..you motor out the harbor ..then the sails are hoisted ...passengers are given the honor of raising the sails ...after that you are cruising by the winds of Maine...Once under sail Capt'n Karl gives you the local lore and knowledge of the area....this alone is priceless! I hope you are as lucky as we were we saw a sleeping sea lion,Apparently they sleep floating and not a care in the world! Hey Maine the way life should be!....Half way in the sail Capt'n Karl brings out quite the spread of cheese crackers and fruit!...Byob is allowed ...if you are taking a sunset cruise bring your camera...awesome colors...the Helen Brooks can accommodate 6 passengers WITHOUT A QUESTION WE RECOMMEND A SAIL ON THE HELEN BROOKS!

We took our grandchildren on the sunset cruise out of Southwest Harbor and were fortunate to have the boat to ourselves. Next, there was a fair wind and finally a beautiful sunset...all of which the company had no control. So, we rate the experience very high as we could not ask for anything more. The crew was informative and friendly and we just felt it was very pleasant experience from start to finish. I would suggest you read the 5 day weather report before booking a sail; however,in Maine if you want the weather to change "wait a minute'". But this might increase your odds for seeing a sunset and enjoying a wind in your sails.

We had a private sail and lobster bake. First the not so good (not horrible, I did rate 4 out of 5.) The owner of the company showed up late with the supplies, so we had to wait for everything to be loaded. This did not thrill us. Neither did the fact that we were in Maine and the pie was not blueberry - seriously? This was on top of having to reschedule our sail, which was fine, but when we booked we chose an alternate date which we were unable to rebook to. When you are on vacation you have plans and we deliberarely worked with the owner to have an alternate date, but he double booked our alternate day. We were as flexible as we could be and the result was just fine as the owner hires the BEST in the field. Here comes the positives - Our captain Lou and his first mate Paige were amazing! They worked fast to get us on the water and took us on a wonderful sail. When we got to Cranberry Island, which we had all to ourselves, they had to anchor the sailboat and row us to shore. Talk about adventure. While we explored the beach, they rowed back and got the supplies from the boat. We hiked to Cranberry house and when we came back we were greeted by a beautiful beach fire and a picnic spread of lobster, corn, potato salad, green salad, bread, brie cheese, fruit and more. It was AMAZING. We really enjoyed this adventure! The sunset sail back was gorgeous and romantic. So, just do it. Book it. It isn't cheap, but it will forever be a highlight. Just be sure if something comes up to go with the punches so you can enjoy this wonderful excursion.

We sailed with Sail Acadia over July 4th for a private sunset charter for my husbands Birthday. It was spectacular. Karl knows the perfect balance of providing a nice spread of cheese and fruit, then tells you a bit about the area and it's history,a few funny stories, and then let's you sit quitly to enjoy the beauty of the ocean, mountains, boats and the purple haze all around you. We've seen some beauty in this worlk and sunset on the water with Karl is right up there!
What a perfect evening in a perfect place in the world. Thank You Karl for making it so special for John and me. Unforgettable!!
