The Inn at Southwest
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 28 October 2012

The Inn at Southwest was just what we were looking for. It was quaint and beautiful Inn and was the perfect retreat from hiking in the Acadia National park. We stayed off season in October but the weather and foliage were both spectacular. The two course breakfasts we were served each morning were delicious and surpassed what we expected in a B&B. What made the Inn really stand out for us was the hospitality of the innkeepers of Esther and Sandy. We felt like we were family. Our room was tastefully decorated with a gorgeous claw foot tub in our bathroom. We took a peak in some of the other rooms and each one was unique and beautiful. Very clean with a wonderful mix of old world charm and modern comfort. You will not be disappointed!

Some places you stay you want a big room to retire to and some places you don't need to. We had a small room which in some places would be too small, but here they have a very welcoming public area with tea, coffee and cookies so you can sit there and relax. We based ourselves in Southwest Harbor as we wanted to go out walking and cycling. There is a great cycle shop opposite the Inn and very good half day plus routes you can take. We were advised that the area may be too quiet, but it was great, with good eating places (we did visit Bar Harbor and it was a bit tacky especially when a cruise ship invaded!) We really enjoyed staying at The Inn at Southwest. Breakfasts were lovely and our hosts very genuine and welcoming. Yes the room was small but I would still take a small room here than a large room in Bar Harbor.

Room Tip: We had Egg Rock which is small but fine for a few days.

Can't recall how many times we've stayed there, but lots.
Besides the comfortable rooms and ample, delicious breakfasts( and Esther's cookies) both Sandy and Esther know Acadia very, very well. Sights, hikes, restaurants, etc, they know it all.
I hope we'll be back next year.

Nice Inn and the staff is very accommodating. Since it was my first visit to the Inn and area, I didn't know that Southwest Harbor is a very small town with limited things to do at night. If you want quite no TV time, then this is your place.
i don't recommend the small room they offer at the Inn (3rd floor), I don't remember the name of the room but the staff knows. It is really to small for two people, we really were not comfortable. If I had know this, I would have looked at other rooms or other options. Live and learn....
If I do return to Southwest Harbor, I will defiantly try and stay at this Inn, just not the small room!

Having vacationed in Acadia many times as campers, this was our first time for my wife and I to enjoy the comforts of B&B living and our first time staying in Southwest Harbor. We chose the Inn at Southwest after reading many stellar trip advisor reviews and from our 3 night experience, the reviews could not have been more spot on. The inn throughout is "homey" and warm, the rooms beautifully appointed and clean and Sandy and Esther are just superb hosts. They immediately made us feel welcome and throughout our stay were providing local input and helpful hints on hiking trails, restaurants and interesting area information and attractions. Southwest Harbor is also a great location and jumping off point for all Acadia has to offer from hiking to biking to gallery hawking and fine dining, all on the quieter west side of the island. Your also just a short ride from the bustle of Bar Harbor if that's what your looking for but regardless, The Inn at Southwest is just a great spot to kick off any day of activities on the island...starting with breakfast. With creative attention and something fresh and new every day, breakfast at the Inn at Southwest is not to be missed. By the end of our stay we felt as though we had made new friends and can't wait to renew that connection the next time we visit Mt Desert Island.

We have been going to Southwest Harbor for many years, typically driving up in August (with our bicycles) leaving the DC heat behind us. We have stayed at the Inn at Southwest four times now, just recently for 6 nights. We would not stay anyplace else. It is a GREAT Inn. Sandy and Esther are wonderful people, genuinely happy and helpful. The house is comfortable and inviting, with plenty of sitting space in case of rain or inclement weather. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable and the breakfast yummy. Whatever you need, you can find it in the house: books, umbrellas, tea, coffee, chocolate kisses (my husband's favorite!), a refrigerator to store cheese or wine, etc. Sandy has very thoughtfully considered the needs of a traveler and worked very hard to ensure those needs are met. The house is lovingly maintained and we often take advantage of the wonderful porch for happy hour (we have had picnic lunches and take out dinners on the porch as well!). I can't think of anything negative to report, and there is nothing I wish they would do differently. We'll be returning.

Room Tip: Front rooms do have noise from the street traffic (unless you close the windows).

I so enjoyed my stay at your Inn. Southwest Harbor is so quiet and peaceful. You can walk to restaurants and shops. The food at the Inn was so tasty. You made me feel at home. Can't wait to come back to the people of the Island as they are so friendly and layed back. Thank you!

Room Tip: My sisters and I traveled together and the suite we picked at the Inn of Southwest was perfect. We e...
