“One of our favorite destinations”
Reviewed 20 February 2013

Our last stay at the Lindenwood Inn was our third. It gets better each time. This time we stayed a full week. When we arrived we found a note from Fred that we were upgraded to the suite and to make ourselves at home; an easy assignment. Breakfast: you start with the self serve buffet of fresh fruit, juices, cereal, nuts, granola, yogurt, muffins or cake, great coffee, and tea selection. Then you get breakfast; something different each day; eggs, omelets, blueberry pancakes; all done with a special herb, sauce, syrup, or jam.
Jim, Fred, and Mario create a friendly and relaxed accommodation. We love the jacuzzi and heated pool. You are welcome to bring lunch or dinner in and eat on the porch or dining room. We only had one day of bad weather which we spent in front of the fire reading. It was a welcome rest after the 8 mile hike the day before.
Southwest Harbor is our favorite town on the island. Great restaurants, friendly residents, and hometown feel. We are ready to go back for another week.

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms.

My wife and I took a lovely drive up the Maine coast to stay in the Bar (Bah) Harbor (Hahbah) area. We decided to stay at the Lindenwood to make the trip a little more romantic.

Jim and Frank were absolutely wonderful hosts. While Frank's breakfasts were certainly no Applebees chicken fingers - they were creative, filling and delicious. I talked to Jim on the phone after we got hung up in Freeport (an ironic name for the area) longer than expected and he couldn't have been more inviting.

While many bed and breakfasts are nice and cozy, they can often be outdated and gaudy. The decor and bedding at the Lindenwood was updated, clean and comfortable yet still authentically charming. The common space was welcoming and relaxing.

It was an absolute treat to chat with the other patrons who have been coming to the Lindenwood for years. After staying there ourselves, I can understand why many guests make the return trip. Jim and Frank make it easy to want to come back.

The only negative comment we have about our stay is that they have raised the bar on our expectations, and anywhere else we stay will now be compared to our stay at the Lindenwood.

So to start with the positives ....the location is great & the common areas are comfortable and well kept. The fireplaces were welcome on cool evenings, and the honour bar is a good idea. The room we had was one of the smaller ones & very compact. Getting in and out of the bathroom was a squeeze. There was no remote for the very tiny TV and no hair dryer available - not great in the cooler weather! Generally the room needs a bit of a spruce up as the bathroom was a little grungy!
Breakfasts were OK if a little pretentious, sometimes being fancy isn't a replacement for being good.

Also, when we arrived the owners were not present. The young lady who showed us around tried her best but was not very aware of the local area and not able to answer our questions (not her fault if she has not received guidance in this).
We met one of the owners the following morning (Fred) he was pleasant enough without beng over welcoming. We asked for advice on a local boat trip and he gave us inconsistent information, thank goodness we had looked it up on the web as if we had followed his advice we would have missed it! We only met the other owner as we checked out, he seemed friendlier if a little jaded by the B&B business. He commented on us being on a budget as we had picked a small room....we felt that was a bit personal. Maybe if the properties pricing was a little more realistic we would have upgraded when we saw that they had other vacancies on the Columbus Day weekend (hardly anyone else in the local area did!). Or maybe they could have suggested ths to us?
All in all, impressive property (public areas) , a B&B not a hotel - and needs work on the welcome / service from the owners. Would we return? Probably not, we'd try elsewhere in the area.

We arrived at this lovely inn to find a note on the counter telling us that Fred was out, and to ring his mobile. I did this, and he told us that he was at the bank and would be back in ten minutes. In the meantime, we should take the key for our room and move in. I know that some people don't like it when someone isn't there to greet them, but for me, this said two things. Firstly, that the owner is relaxed, and secondly that I am trusted.

Once we were installed in our (lovely) room, Fred returned and introduced himself. He seemed a really nice bloke, and in the next two days did nothing to change my opinion. There is an honour bar with beers and wine, which again I thought nice, and although Fred went out one evening when we decided to have a pizza on the porch, he allowed us free reign of the kitchen to use glasses, crockery and cutlery.

The inn is beautifully decorated. The public rooms have glistening wooden floors and fireplaces with comfortable sofas by them. There are also tables on the porch if you want to sit outside with a drink (or, like us, a drink and pizza). We had a first floor room which looked on to the street, although the sea was visible. It was immaculate and comfortable.

There is a small private pool and a whirlpool in the garden.

Breakfast was served downstairs with a good choice of food and was delicious.

The Inn is within an easy walk of Southwest Harbor's shops and restaurants, and an easy drive of Bar Harbour, the loop road and the other attractions of Acadia. I would really recommend the Inn and it would be my first choice of accomodation on the Island.

We enjoyed a few days outside Bar Harbor and then ventured to Lindenwood and Southwest Harbor for a relaxing, peaceful conclusion to our Acadia NP visit. Fred is an excellent B & B host and makes you feel right at home from the time you first meet him. It's very nicely decorated but comfortable and homey. Southwest Harbor was a fun contrast to the faster paced, more crowded Bar Harbor area (although it was great fun as well). We'd stay there again on another ANP visit.

The elegance and charm of this meticulously maintained B&B is matched by the beauty of Southwest Harbor an upscale town with a working harbor on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island. The Island Explorer (Acadia Nat'l Park's free bus service) runs right by the inn and it's a convenient drive to many trailheads, parking areas where one can explore Acadia.

Casual chic and originality are the trademarks of this special place. Fred and Jim are the proprietors, both Aussies with a wide world view who know how to accomodate the variety of travelers. Their sense of humor, grace and genuine friendliness make one feel immediately like a very welcome guest. Other staffers we met, (chef and housekeeper) are equally personable.

The bed was quite comfortable, rooms have creative, carefully planned decor, breakfasts generous, healthy, and prepared with flair. Extras like scones, muffins, fresh fruit and yogurt are available as well. The common areas are inviting..outdoors and indoors where they have fireplaces and a side table stacked with pertinent newsletters, tourist's literature and maps.
Fred and Jim are quick to recommend area restaurants and were quite accurate in assessing our tastes.

A terrific outdoor jacuzzi and an impressively stocked "honor bar" are fine additional touches.

The atmosphere, energy and location of this place felt like perfection to us. (hardy middle aged explorers from NYC: cyclists, hikers...talkers)
