My wife and I recently had the pleasure of spending 4 nights at the Lodge-ings with Don and Marge. It was a wonderful experience.

Their home is comfortably compact. While the guest bedrooms are arranged in a cluster upstairs, there was no intrusive noise. The house is conveniently situated on Sea Wall Road. If you haven't visited Southewest Harbor before, don't be put off by the fact that it is not located "in-town". Stores are literally just minutes away, as is Acadia's Wonderland shoreline area (great for an evening/sunset picnic), the classic Bass Harbor Lighthouse, and numerous restaurants.

Don's breakfasts have been aptly described in other reviews. Where else do you have the opportunity to initial your choice of three or so different breakfast entree combinations? Each is delicious, though in fairness, if you're the type of traveller who expects to be served the types of breakfasts that you don't have time to make yourself at home, you won't find them here. Don't worry - the food is wonderful, the pastries (baked by Marge) are wicked good (try the blueberry muffins), and the coffee in good supply.

As noted, Don is a good story teller! My wife and I enjoyed his many stories, and spent part of a particularly warm afternoon on the delightful porch (water view!) hearing Don tell some of his many tales. Never intrusive, but ever present to share a good story. Or a good suggestion. My wife and I were planning on taking the Cranberry Island ferry off of Clark Point Road, and Don quickly pointed out a delightful foot path that he had common rights to which lead us on a nice walk directly across from the Inn to the docks to meet the ferry at its second loading point.

(BTW - if you're visiting Southwest Harbor, I strongly encourage you to make a reservation at the Islesford Dock Restaurant on Cranberry Island. A little pricey, but worth it - the ferry over to the island adds another $30/RT/person, but create an evening to remember on any beautiful Maine summer night) Besides - with the money you save booking a room at The Lodge-ings you can afford it!

Not for the Martha Stewart crowd seeking a Royal getaway, but I give The Lodge-ings 5 stars for value, comfort, and convenience!

The Lodge-ings is a small B&B lovingly run by Don and Marge Lodge. It offers nice views of the water, convenient access to Southwest Harbor (near but not in-town) which is a far preferable place to stay on MDI than the more honky-tonk Bar Harbor, wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly hosts, terrific breakfast options and very nicely appointed rooms. We have stayed their twice and have never been disappointed.

We had a lovely 3 night stay here for our 6th anniversary and it is one of our favorite of a dozen B&B stays. Don was friendly and fun, gave lots of local spots to try (we visited Ship Harbor and Seawall at his recommendation and loved both!!) and made a great breakfast. He was very sociable -- we had no complaints. We got to see Bar Harbor and the park without the crowds by staying on the Quiet side and the view out our window and from the porch was just lovely. Recommend this spot fully!!!!!

Lovely spot off the beaten path with a view of the harbor. Hosts were very friendly and offered great advice about things to do on Mount Desert Island, very knowledgeable about Acadia National Park and the area. Room was very clean. Food was great, each guest chose breakfast the night before from a varied rotating menus. I would stay here again.

We found this place by luck. Don Lodge has retired to Southwest Harbor (on the quiet side of Mt Desert Island) and thought he would be bored. So he and Marge opened a B&B. Don loves to cook and experimented with all sorts of new recipes when we told him we ate vegan (grilled portabella on English muffin with hummus - YUM!). He also is so outgoing and well-read and fun to talk with. He provided us with hiking maps, great advice about what to do and where to go. He even contacted one of the island bird specialists when my husband came back with a picture he couldn't identify. The B&B is on an alternative road to the main road just outside the small town of Southwest Harbor. The rooms are ample size, the beds comfortable, and the breakfasts were all good. There's a lounge with packed bookshelves. Marge was also interesting to talk with, although she will admit up front that this is Don's B&B. We would go back and stay with them in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: The front room gets some road noise when the fishermen are going out in the morning, but we were able to roll over and go back to sleep. Suggest trying one of the back rooms if you are a light sleeper.
