Smuggler's Den Campground
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 August 2012

My husband and I just returned from Acadia National Park and spent 3 nights at Smugglers Den. We didn't make reservations months or even weeks in advance, and the campgrounds inside the park were already booked. We decided on Smugglers Den and were so pleased once we arrived and set up camp. They had everything we needed from hot and free showers, clean bathrooms, good size camp sites, firewood for sale, camp store, and close distance to all that Acadia has to offer. This was on the quiet side of the island which we preferred as we were there during the peak season, but didn't see mobs of people. We stayed at #64 (tent site) on the field which seemed to have more privacy and space inbetween sites. After reading other reviews/comments about the cost of showers at Blackwoods/Seawall ($2 for a few minutes), we were happy that we didnt have to worry about rolls of quarters and driving back & forth to bathrooms. Overall wonderful experience. Would recommend to other families, groups, etc. TIP: drive down the road to Sea Biscuits for breakfast - Amazing!

We stayed here 3 nights in our motorhome in July 2012. Our site was nicely shaded but not all were. The staff was friendly. Lobsters and lobster boiling equipment were available at the camp store. The location was great, convenient to Southwest Harbor, Bar Harbor, and Acadia Nat. Park. The campground was on the bus route if you did not want to drive around the island. Everything was clean and well maintained. We found this campground to be quiet and relaxing.

This was a family trip that's been planned for almost a year. There are 6 adults (3 couples) and one child. The plan was we would get a premium RV site and couple+child would put up a tent on the same site. My in-laws are not new to making RV reservations, nor is this set up new for us, and they also are still of the talk to a person on the phone instead of relying on the fancy interwebs to confirm the reservation. I am 99.99% sure that my father-in-law double checked to make sure that this arrangement was allowable.

Needless to say, when we got there, we were informed that no, this is not possible. The reason was that the site we were on was new and they were trying to get the grass to grow. Maybe something about having treated the grass too. This was annoying, but okay, makes sense, the tent would have smooshed the grass.

We arrive at the site ... the grass looked plenty fine, and the site next to us had a one of those tent things with screen sides to eat in up. The site also had a large paved section for the RV to sit on. So brilliant, the paved section was plenty large enough for us to put up a tent and *not* be on the grass. We even double checked with one of the grounds people, who said, sure that's fine. My father-in-law is a very honest person, so we went to the office to just triple-check. Sure enough, no, that's not allowed. I don't even know what the reason was. Now it felt like they were being stubborn on purpose.

And also, sure enough later that day, the woman in the office drove around in the little grounds keep cart past us to make sure. But did she say anything about the tented thing that was up next to us? No.

Other than my annoyance with this, the campground was very nice. The bathrooms were clean, although the showers were very cramped. The pool was very nice and clean as well.

Once again we stayed in one of the rustic cabins at Smugglers Den. Since we have been staying here for several years it feels like coming home to old friends. Dave and Spike always stop by to say hello during our first day. Rain always welcomes us when we check in, it is nice to check in somewhere and be greeted by name when you come in the front door. Bill and Steve are always welcoming and helpful with any questions.
The rustic cabin is perfect for the two of us. It is clean and beds are comfortable and the mini fridge is just large enough.
Although we no longer tent camp we still take a morning stroll around the sites. They are spacious and clean.
We noticed the new playground is a great hit with the younger campers. This is the best family campground we have ever stayed at. We stayed here when our children were young, prior to the pool and playground. I know they would have enjoyed both even though they did not miss having these.

Room Tip: All sites are perfect. Check out the website to choose the site that works for you.

We stayed for 5 days in one of the Deluxe cabins..it was wonderful..it was a beautiful cabin. Immaculate & was "stocked" to the hilt!!! You really don't need to drag all of your camping gear if you stay in the deluxe cabin..plates, pots & pans, silverware, glassware, trash bags, dish soap, coffee pot, toilet tissue, even a cork screw which one, oh so many times forgets!! :o) The cabin also has a screened in porch & there is a gas grill & fire ring as well. They are in the process of making renovations around the cabins & building another one..seeding for grass around the cabins & getting ready to put walkways with pavers which will be a beautiful addition when completed.
The owners of the campground are very friendly & accomodating..from the moment we were in contact to inquire about staying. They were away but, still sent me a response! When I spoke on the phone with the owners wife to make the reservation, she was so accomodating & friendly I couldn't wait to get there!
We were talking about seeing moose etc & we talked about we didn't care about traveling..we were given a recommendation to head to Baxter State Park if we want to see moose..a little far from the campground (approx. 2 1/2 hrs) but, we didn't care..Boy were we glad we went there..did see moose both by a pond after hiking in & on the road when we left! This is a wonderful park with thousand of miles of hiking, waterfalls, etc. When we went into the office to get a map we were graciously shown the route on a map by the women in the office. There also was a brochure for Top of the Hill restaurant at the front desk, if you don't want to cook one night go, I think you won't be disappointed (located right outside of the campground)
We took a hike in the woods from the campground to Echo Lake & it was a wonderful hike
We stayed 5 days & I can't wait to return very, very soon! Especially since it rained the entire 5 days (with some breaks of sun) to make better use of the hiking trails from the campground, Acadia National Park & the Carriage roads..

We stayed Memorial Day weekend,2012. The noise level was incredibly loud, with no real enforcement of quiet hours. No less than 5 people wandered through our site to cut through to get to the party site. There was loud cussing, sexual derogatory comments and a general lack of attention from camp management. This is by no means a place for people with young children.

Additionally, the only restroom/shower facilty onsite is closed for one hour each day for cleaning, with no alternate options.

Owners installed a new playground so familys with youngsters will have a better than ever stay. Already planning next years stay. Staff are the greatest.
