“So comfortable and accommodating”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

This is our third time have a wonderful vacation on Mt. Desert Island. Our stay at Kingsleigh Inn was perfect. We love the quiet side of the island for obvious reasons and Kingsleigh Inn was located very conveniently and with a beautiful view of the Harbor to boot! Every breakfast we had was incredible and we had 5 different ones! In addition, there were cafes and restaurants within walking distance for lunch, dinner, and ice-cream. We rented bikes directly across the street and the ferry to Cranberry Isles was a short walk away. Sea Kayak rentals were very close by as well but we didn't do that this trip. The owners' attention to detail was evident everywhere and it all resulted in a superior, comfortable vacation.

Room Tip: All rooms have a porch but ask for a room with a view of the Harbor - not sure if all rooms have tha...

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your guest experience at Kingsleigh Inn and your visitor experience in Southwest Harbor. We're so happy to know that your bicycling adventure on the Cranberries was memorable - we certainly enjoyed our little get-away there a few weeks ago. We would like to let future guests know that the rooms with private decks and harbor views are the Chelsea, Abbott and Hawthorne all with queen bed, private bath and located on the 2nd floor and the Penthouse Turret Suite with over 800 sq. ft., a living room, sitting room, the turret room, very spacious private bath and private deck with harbor view.
And, as our guests from New Orleans mentioned, though they could not fit it in on this trip (never enough days for all that MDI & Acadia National Park have to offer), our sea kayak company in Southwest Harbor has the most laid-back ocean tour on the island and they always see wildlife. So, we hope when these guests return, they will be able to take the tour and create a new MDI memory.

I am not a “good B&B person.” Typically I prefer the anonymity and standardization of top-end chain hotels to anything a B&B can offer. But on Mount Desert Island in Maine, there are no chain hotels. The options are B&Bs and inns or camping. Faced with this, my wife and I chose Kingsleigh Inn and we came away very impressed. Everything we could have wanted from a chain hotel – professionalism, excellent rooms and food, strong WiFi, location and convenience – were available here. We splurged on the nicest room in the Inn, the Turret Suite, and we were not disappointed. On top of all that, the owners went (way) above the call of duty and made our stay a special one.

Room
The room was actually a three-room suite (living room, bedroom, turret room) with a private deck overlooking the water. The turret room alone made it worth paying more. The view was a joy: boats bobbing, pine trees in the distance, birds flying by. The large bed was comfortable. At night and during a storm, we took advantage of the flat-screen TV with built-in DVD player. Comfy couch and chairs, decent reception including cable. Very pleasant.

Food
Kingsleigh Inn had the best food of any B&B we’d ever visited. The egg dishes were made with flair. Lobster or fresh vegetables made them interesting. In our view (and we are “food people”), the main dishes, the side dishes (e.g. roasted sweet potatoes) and lowfat breakfast “desserts” were worthy of a fine restaurant. The Maine blueberry sorbet with fresh mint from the garden was to die for. Tasty baked goods were delicious and were available in appropriate (small) portion sizes for us carb watchers. We thoroughly enjoyed every breakfast. We saw nothing but clean plates around us.

Afternoon snacks and round-the-clock tea & coffee completed the picture. On top of that, there was an espresso machine available 24/7 as well. Heaven! And our room had a small fridge. Dishes and silverware available in the lobby/kitchen area made it easy to enjoy some meals in our room.

Service
We can’t say enough about the excellent and professional service from Bryan and Pamela. They were responsive to every need and thought of some things that we hadn’t e.g. umbrellas and maps for guest use. They were easygoing even when things went wrong e.g. a hurricane that knocked out power to much of Southwest Harbor for over half of our stay. Fortunately, they had installed a gas generator and it took over seamlessly. We did not notice a difference. Everything worked – lights, WiFi, cable TV, coffee machines. Amazing.

Location
Southwest Harbor is tiny. Kingsleigh Inn is on the main road within 5 minutes’ walk of the few shops and restaurants. We love Southwest Harbor so we will be back.

Other guests
The dreaded (for this non-B&B person) breakfast conversation was actually pleasant and not too intrusive. The hosts choose their guests well. We met some interesting people. The environment (free coffee, good food) was conducive to pleasant conversation.

Extras
To our great surprise and delight, Bryan helped extricate us from what could have been a big hassle. A branch pulled down power cables that ran along the side of the Inn. Other cars were outside the cable but ours was not. It looked like we were going to have to wait hours if not days for a crew to come and move the cables, especially after the fire marshal told Bryan that they were “hot.”

Talk about resourceful. First, Bryan, a former Hewlett Packard engineer, took a testing device and determined that the wires were not, in fact, hot. Then he bolted some crosspieces onto two-by-fours and he and Pamela gingerly lifted the cable over our car so that I could move it. The storm was still raging at that point. We all got soaked. But the car was freed. We were so grateful!

Room Tip: Turret suite is on the third floor and is made up of three rooms, two of them very large. Turret sui...

My wife and I have been coming to Mound Desert Island for the past 20+ years, each year on our wedding Anniversary. We found the Kingsleigh Inn after our reservation by a Bar Harbor bed and breakfast was canceled the week before we were supposed to leave. After 20 years of going to Bar Harbor we decided to change side of the island and found the Kingsleigh Inn in Southwest Harbor, by pure luck as they had a cancellation. After our first visit to the Kingsleigh, we left feeling like idiots that we had not come here before. We came back to the Kingsleigh Inn this spring and had an absolutely wonderful time again. We've already made reservations for next year. The Kingsleigh Inn was just perfect for us. We have stayed in 3 different rooms now, and each one was just great. Other recent reviews have talked about the rooms, the radiant bathroom floors, and the views, but there is so much more. Before breakfast Pam and Brian put out pastries and coffees, and I absolutely love waking up and having a coffee in the cool Maine air watching the Sound. The entire Inn is wonderfully furnished and chock full of books, some of which set us on wonderful hunts through the island to look for items. There are lots of little touches, including eyeglass cleaners in the lobby, which as an eyeglass wearer I truly appreciated, and had never seen before in hotels or Inns. It shows the care that Pam and Bryan take for their guests. We have found them to be wonderful hosts that are very easy going and easy to talk to. I'm a nature photographer so I couldn't eat breakfast every day as I was up early to take pictures but they were happy to feed me on the days I wasn't. Overall my wife and I have truly loved our stays at the Kingsleigh Inn. I left this past May wishing that I could have stayed longer. We expect to keep coming back for many years.

Pamela and Bryan are wonderful hosts who know the area and make guests feel at home. Rooms are newly redone and each one has an outside porch w chairs so guests can enjoy a harbor view. Grab some wine, coffee, and spiced nuts and enjoy. Bryan creates a fresh fruit drink every morning. Have fun guessing ingredients. Location gives easy walk to Beal's and other great eating establishments. Southwest Harbor is absolutely gorgeous. Have fun.

We went back to the Kingsleigh Inn for our fourth time in August of 2013. We already have reservations for August of 2014. Pamela and Bryan are great hosts. Breakfasts are always phenomenal and I've traded recipes with Pamela over the last couple of years. There's always something to do in Southwest Harbor and they have been very helpful in giving us tips on where to go and things that we might enjoy doing. The rooms are very nicely decorated and appointed and on cool mornings the radiant heat floors in the bathrooms are a great touch. The wine and homemade snacks at 5 PM are worth coming back for as well as Pamela's cookies which magically appear during the afternoon. The last couple of years we've had a room with a little deck and a view of Somes Sound. Just wonderful!

Room Tip: Go to their website. There are pictures and descriptions of all the rooms. You can see which ones...

The Kingsleigh Inn is absolutely adorable and definitely the place to stay on MDI if you're looking for something on the quieter side. The Inn is run by Pam and Ryan who are the nicest, most welcoming couple - they really make you feel at home! They make a three course breakfast for you every morning and the food is delightful! With a good, healthy and hearty breakfast to start the day you are ready to go hike all over Acadia! At 5 o'clock everyday Pam and Ryan set out a happy hour - wine and a snack. It was so nice to come back after a full day of activities to a glass of wine waiting for you! The Inn has great views of the water and is only a minute walk to the downtown area of Southwest Harbor which has some great little restaurants for dinner. It was so nice to stay somewhere so clean and friendly, away from all the touristy stuff in Bar Harbor but still in a great location to do all the activities that MDI has to offer! I would definitely recommend staying at the Kingsleigh Inn and I can't wait to book my return trip!

My wife and I had such a wonderful time at the Kingsleigh Inn last June that we decided to visit again. The Turret Suite welcomed us as old friends. The bed was refreshingly comfortable as we smelled the salt air from the harbor. We have stayed at many B&B's through the years, but none of them have served breakfasts that can compare to the selections that Pamela and Bryan prepared on our two visits. Their meals, and their willingness to do anything to make our week special, allowed us to begin each day knowing that their recommendations for sightseeing, kayaking, and dinner selections were the best the island could offer. I find Pamela and Bryan to be sincere, charming, and teeming with integrity. The suite is beautifully appointed and immaculately clean. Now that we have made two enjoyable visits to the Kingsleigh Inn, a third visit will be forthcoming.
