Description: Situated in leafy Lower Assendon, Luscombes is a welcoming small-town eatery that oozes old world charm. With its rustic furniture, warm neutral tones and cosy fireplace, the dining room is the perfect place to catch up with friends or enjoy a mid-week meal. While the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, the menu clearly means business. Chef-patron Stephen Luscombe is passionate about locally sourced produce and his menu features classic British dishes like duck breast with pearl barley; saddle of spring lamb with gnocchi; and chicken liver parfait with coriander toast. For dessert, don't miss the chocolate fondant with a melting caramel centre - a real treat for chocoholics! With friendly service and an excellent wine list on offer too, Luscombes never fails to impress.

So lets deal with the food first of all. It's ok to good. There are places nearby that do very similar (fresh local seasonal produce) just as good if not better at similar prices - but as I said its ok to good - absolutely no complaints at all but its nothing special.

The setting is pleasant enough and inside its slightly cramped but ok -again nothing special. So why the poor review? - its the service, or rather one member of staff in particular who chose to inform the whole table and also the section of the restaurant we were in that my son was "smashing a bench in" Upon checking with a) my son and most importantly of all b) other patrons in the beer garden that actually he was knocking back in a loose slat from an old bench piled up with other broken benches by the vegetable garden.
Obviously its his word (and that of the patrons who were sitting nearby that I asked) against the member of staff who I talked to but the obvious disdain with which I was treated leaves a very nasty taste in the mouth.

Sorry Steven, I shall never be troubling your establishment again and won't be recommending it to other people although the food was fine.

Friendly staff but silly prices for smallish portions. We paid £20 each for a mains, happy to pay but not for portion sizes - ...veal - beautifully cooked but just 2 x small slices one mini fondant potato and a leaf or 2 of spinach...£20. Small bowl of risotto with lobster ( a few pieces) and a weird orange sauce (?? not that tasty with rest of dish!!) for £20 ....Yummy puds but the cheese and biscuits a real disappointment....one small piece - slither - 8 x grapes, dollup of chutney and 5 x small biscuits just under £9...sorry but really not worth it. For 2 of us inc bottle of cheapish white wine £95 ..... nice eve out but wont be going back.

We didn't know what to expect here and were really pleasantly surprised by the food, service and ambiance. Sadly on a Friday night there were only three other table of two the entire evening which is a shame as the food was really excellent and it was also great value. Beautifully presented with friendly service.
A shame that it is just a restaurant and not a pub also still but we will be back.

We ate here with two friends and all had the set lunch (£12.50 for 2 courses, £15 for 3 courses). The starters we had were terrine and a smoked trout mousse both rated as excellent followed by crayfish cakes x 3 and fish and chips which I had. Again we all thought our main course was excellent. When it came to puddings we all splashed out on the £3 extra raspberry souffle which was (wait for it) excellent as well. We shared a bottle of South African Chenin which was fine but priced more in line with the a la carte menu at almost £20. Service was very efficient and pleasant. We have had the set lunch before and always found it to be a very good meal and excellent value.

Lovely dinner with friends. All the food was demolished!
The tuna carpaccio was excellent. We all had steak of different variety and they were all very good. Nice sauces and good selection of veg.
Interesting choice of puddings something for everyone and even though I'm not a pudding man, I would have been happy with any of them.
Charming service. Attentive and polite. All rounded off with good coffee.
More enjoyable than other local establishments with stars and reputations.
