Everything that has been said is true - a great local pub in a stunning location with superb views over the Thames valley.
However - they serve the VERY BEST rare beef that I have ever tasted. My colleague had haunch of venison and declared it just as delicious.
Apparently the Sunday roast is from the same "well-hung" (30 days) butchered beef and I intend to return to try it.

Highly recommended.

Thank you for coming to lunch with us and for taking the trouble to review your experience, It was a pleasure to have you here and my husband is most pleased that you enjoyed the beef (a passion of his!).
We do hope to see you again.
Kind regards, Tracey Taverner

We came up here on a chilly spring night. The food was absolutely first class. Service a bit slow but who cares we weren't in a hurry. We sat in the conservatory for the views over the Chilterns. The staff had thoughtfully put an extra heater right at our backs so we didn't feel too cold. Wouldn't say they had a great choice of ales as one of the reviewers did, but over all a great evening with attentive and friendly staff. Thanks

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your review. I am so pleased that you had an enjoyable evening. Our chefs work very hard to produce fresh, high standard food from the best local ingredients and it is hugely encouraging to all of us to know that it is appreciated by someone who obviously knows his stuff! It makes all the hard work worthwhile. Hope to see you again. Kind regards. Tracey

Set in a small typical English village (think Midsomer Murders), "The Shoes" as it is known locally, is a classic olde English pub, with beams and flagstone floors, in the bar, which welcomes walkers and their dogs. The main restaurant is in a light airy conservatory with spectacular views of the Chiltern hills. The garden also has spectacular views and is a great spot to relax and rehydrate after a long walk in the summer. There is a good, varied menu of lighter and more substantial dishes featuring local produce, expertly cooked, with everything from homemade soup and sandwich to a full traditional roast on Sundays. The pub features a good selection of real ales and has a very good and interesting wine list. The proprietors and their staff are always friendly and helpful. Particularly good value is the lunch menu at 12.95 GBP for two courses or 15.95 GBP for three. I highly recommend it.

A fleeting visit after being drenched during a long walk. The location is excellent and no doubt unchanged over many long years at the end of the vast Russell's Water Common with its wonderful views over the Chilterns.

Seemed a cosy pub with character. Brakspeares on tap, although I tried their home made finer beer instead. Fizzy and tangy, but not quite gingery. Definetely one to return to in better weather under more relaxed circumstances.

We tried this pub today for lunch but thought it was overall poor .The waiting staff are unfriendly and none of them appear to enjoy what they do .The whole operation appears to be a shambles the only thing going for it is the location but it badly needs money spending on the interior .Could be a great place in the right hands .
