My wife and I organised a trip to New England and especially Maine at the end of September so that we could experience the world famous foliage and lobsters!
We planned the trip in such a way that we had less than 2 hours' drive between places to stay and Topsham was about 1.5 hours away from Boston which was very convenient. We booked in at the Black Lantern B&B and little did I know that this would be probably one of the best B&B's I ever stayed in!
Location wise, it is really good as it is easy to drive from Boston. Just follow the highway until you reach Topsham. From there, a few miles down the road, you will find the Black Lantern B&B. Be warned that it is not easily seen from the road as the sign is quite small. There is plenty of parking space inside the property and the house itself is magnificent. We wanted to stay in a very typical colonial style B&B and we were not disappointed.
The house is very authentic, incredibly clean, amazingly quiet with lots of parking space. Upon arrival we were showed to our room, which was at the back of the house, overlooking the river! The bedroom itself was very nice, with everything you need. A very nice extra is the thermostat in the room so you can heat the room to the temperature you like. The bathroom is very functional, not the biggest, but with all you need for a nice shower and refreshing yourself (soap, shampoo, towels, etc...). The hotel has wifi.
It is possible to access the rest of the house in the evening, lovely and nice living room with sofa etc. There is no tv in the room or in the house. If you prefer sitting outside and enjoy watching life passing by, you can do so on the swinging bench on the porch. If you are lucky like we were, you might even see a porcupine walking by. It was the first time we ever saw one which was a nice bonus for the trip.
The breakfast was fantastic with plenty to eat and all of very good quality. We had French toast, scones, fruit, fruit juice and tea/coffee.We had the chance to sit at the table with another couple driving around Maine so had the chance to have a friendly chat about our travels. All very good indeed!
The owners of the B&B are very helpful and very friendly. they gave us a couple of tips such as telling us about a diner they liked which is about 30 minutes driving away from the B&B. The diner is called Moody's Diner where you can find the Maine famous pies, Whoopy Pies and typical diner food all at a very reasonable price.
For dinner, there are plenty of places around although you will need a car to get to them. We went to eat lobster on Georgetown Island at a place called the Five Islands Lobster Co. for fresh lobster rolls. Well worth the trip with very easy access from the B&B.
All in all we had a fantastic stay which I would recommend to you without hesitation. After a so-so stay in Boston, the Black Lantern B&B was the most perfect place to start our holiday in Maine. If we are ever back in the area, we would definitely stay here again... But this time for a much longer stay!
