Well, the Tidewater is an institution of Vinalhaven. It sort of reflects the essence of the island - unassuming, sturdy, clean and just want you want. The loudest thing is the sound of the tide going and coming that flows under the bridge. You will just love this little place. It is run in a laid back way - don't be surprised if your key is left with a note on the counter in the office when you arrive. They have bikes to rent and lots of wonderful stories. And make sure you check out the museum at the historical society - it is wonderful.

Upon arrival, you quickly realize this is a quiet little island town and this being the only motel was worth the cost. Opening the door to room #6 we were hit with a spectacular view to the harbor with our own deck. Our room literally is over the water. Quiet only at high tide, the rushing waters below make for an exciting stay. The room itself was a little worn but had everything we needed for our stay. Staff was friendly although plans need to be confirmed as the owner is spread a little thin on remembering it all. Kayaking is superb! Seals and bald eagles were scene.

We will return.

Our family spent a memorable 2 nights at the Tidewater Motel recently. We stayed in rooms 7 & 8 and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and location over the water. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. We especially enjoyed the lobster boat ride they arranged for all of us!

My husband and I have stayed at all sorts of great places but our visit to the Tidewater was one of the most fun. We were lucky enough to get the Crow's Nest, which is a great little room at the top of the motel. The room itself is somewhat worn, granted, but it has everything you need, including a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. It helped that we had gorgeous weather the weekend we were there so we could sit out on the tiny private balcony and watch the goings on in the harbor. The place is super low-key and some people may be confused to see room keys laid out on the unmanned counter in the reception area, but you just take the key and get yourself set up! There's a small continental breakfast set up in the reception area, as well, with cereal and really yummy muffins. We went over without a car and expected to rent either bikes or kayaks from the motel, but we actually spend both days exploring on foot. Lane's Island, owned by the Nature Conservancy is a gorgeous walk and both of the quarries that are now public swimming spots are wonderful and within walking distance of the motel. A few words of warning about Vinalhaven in general - it's a really small town, meaning that the options for dining and shopping are few. What's there is great, but pay close attention to the hours of operation for the local places, especially on Sunday when nearly everything is closed or closes early. If you enjoy the outdoors and don't need to be pampered, you'll love Vinalhaven and the Tidewater.

I just read the last review and can understand how Dale might have expected a different experience, BUT, we have been going back for 10 years intermittently with my 4 kids and friends and have created some of the best memories of our short life so far. The owner is AWESOME and so friendly to us, so honest and laid back. They made special arrangements to insure our boat spot on the trip over every time and go out of their way to give us room and equipment (bikes, kayaks and suggestions) that have repeatedly made this one of our best excursions each year. (Don't miss the quarry diving) I've lived in New Hampshire for 42 years and I know New England... it doesn't get any more authentic than this (but authentic comes with certain challenges)... It's not 5 star accommodations, but neither is the price or attitude of the owner... YOU WILL FEEL AT HOME! A rich rich experience for anyone who wants to step off the spinning world for a time. I know I need to unplug myself and my kids from time to time to see life again. My wife and I fall back in love every time we go... THAT'S WORTH THE PRICE OF THE ADMISSION alone. Thank you...

I'm not sure what all the other reviews are seeing that I'm missing. The room did have a terrific view, without a doubt. We stayed in the highest roo called crow's nest. Lodging it at a minimum on the island anyway, so not much to choose from. Owners were nice and wifi is free. Now for the down side. We were quoted $100/night and charged $125. The bed is on a wood frame so slept like laying on a piece of plywood, extremely hard ad uncomfortable. There were a few bugs crawling around the walls and bathtub. The refrigerator was off when we got to the room. Bathroom had an electrical outlet hanging out of the wall. Creamers for the coffee were spolied. They have a DVd player, but the TV screen is ony a 12"! Need to sit on top of the screen to see it. We stayed on top floor and all lights in the hallway were out when we got back to room at night so had to feel our way up two flights of stairs. The carpet had several nasty stains on the floor. The room did have a window right above the bed to look at the stars. it was nice but pretty bright when daylight comes in morning. Room is VERY outdated along with the furniture. Even the chair with the ripped cover over it! We would not stay here again. Much better to get a rental or cabin.

Room Tip: Don't stay here if you want a decent clean room!

This couple e-mailed as soon as they returned home to bring the overcharge to my attention. I acknowledged it and immediately sent them a check for the difference (we don’t keep credit card #’s). The bed is a high quality mattress but is on a wood platform. I find it provides better support and rest than a box spring and virtually everyone (except this couple) comments favorably about the sleep they enjoyed. We are normally closed during the winter but were staying on board to do some remodeling so we remained open to provide accommodations for the occasional off-season guest. Unfortunately, I had not paid as much attention to details as I should have. Consequently the fridge had not been turned on; neither had the motion detector lights been switched to the ‘auto’ position and the GFI had been partly dislodged from the bathroom wall by a previous guest. I did find a bug in the bathroom. It was a housefly. I’ve had it evicted. The Crow’s Nest is our most popular room. From its roof-top berth our guests usually enjoy the view more than the TV. It’s a small room with a small TV. No one has ever complained about the lack of a large screen. The skylight has a shade. Otherwise I apologize for this couple’s disappointment and offer them a complimentary night of their choice.

We decided to see Vinalhaven on a last minute whim and were lucky enough to get a room at the Tidewater Motel. Their saying is "closest to the water than anyplace that's not a boat". That's pretty spot on! Our room (highly recomend a room on the sluice/ tide race) was comfortable, homey, and spotless. A step out onto the deck places you directly above the tide race. And race it does. Some might describe the lapping lull of ocean waves - this was the roar of the tide rushing in or out - pretty magnificent but definitely a noise.

The owner was available for tips and assistance for exploring the island. We were able to hook up with a lobster boat and its captain through Phil for a tour around neighboring Greens Island. It was a wonderful excursion.

We did not bring a vehicle across to the island as we were only planning to stay one night. We walked all around the town and had two outstanding meals: lobster roll lunch at Harbor Gawker and dinner at 57 Bayview Bar & Bistro. We couldn't have asked for better meals.

We would repeat this trip with exactly the same place to stay in a heartbeat.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Tidewater Motel is built on a bridge separating Carver's Harbor to the south from Carver's Pond, its tidal estuary, to the north. The same rush of ocean water coming and going right under your harborside room once powered a blacksmith shop and grist mill on the site. Few views can equal those at the Tidewater and few places are as relaxing; the ebb and flow is nature's own sedative. Still, the world's most productive lobster fleet, anchored right outside your window, gets an early start, so you may not want to sleep in. Open year-round, the Tidewater is the island's only motel. If you want to be closer to the water, you'll have to get wet. ... more   less
