N43°54.081' W69°42.523' We left Wiscasset after dark for the Squire Tarbox Inn with only the satellite navigation knowing where to go. We got the feeling entering an unknown dark world, driving along country roads without any clue of our position. After a half hour, suddenly we noticed lights in the dark and entered the remote world of hotel guests enjoying themselves in a 1763 farmhouse sitting room of the Squire Tarbox Inn.

This Lonely Planet top choice is in the middle of the Westport Island, has 11 rooms and, we think, the only restaurant on the island. We asked for the cheapest and smallest, room number 5, for two nights in August 2013. The ceiling is very low and the bathroom is tiny. We aren't oversized, so we did not have problems with tiny spaces. We found our room to be intimate, although there wasn’t a key to our room. With open windows and insect screens, because mosquitos are relentless here, you sleep very close to nature. The excellent bed and pure air contributed to an excellent sleep. We didn't need the window air conditioner. Wi-Fi is good in the barn, not in our room. The terrace of the room is useless because of the mosquitos. Use the main terrace with mosquito screens.

We read to reviews about the grumpy old Swiss owner, but his absolute friendly wife and daughter safely retired him to the back office away from guests. But the Swiss theme is still present in the excellent breakfast and menu in the restaurant. The haddock and duck breast dishes were very good, competing with a glorious sunset generating a sunset alarm throughout the hotel.

The owner gave us an introduction of two walks in the neighbourhood of the Inn. We walked the West Shore Road including the Bonyon preserve. The only downside to this beautiful walk, despite applying DEET to visible skin, were the ferocious attacks of mosquitos biting through our clothing and leaving irritating marks. Apply DEET under your clothes. For the rest, The Squire Tarbox Inn is much recommended.

My husband and I stayed here on our road trip around New England last October. What an amazing place - bit of a drive to get there but well worth it. The best surprise was the food in the restaurant - amazing standard and cooked by the husband and daughter owners. Breakfast was equally amazing and they even jump started our hire car which conked out on us. Amazing house, beautiful rooms and lounge areas, honesty bar and lovely owners. Highly recommended.

We came to the Squire tarbox Inn on our honeymoon 26 years ago. We felt the need to get away for a long weekend and wanted to see if the Inn was still in existence. So happy to find it was albeit under different management. It is now run by a very accomplished and decorated Swiss chef and his wife, an ex flight attendant with Pan Am and their daughter Lara, a real breath of fresh air. We visited in december of 2013 and the rooms in the main house were available. Our main floor room was equiped with aworking fireplace and was always cozy despite the extremely cold outside temps. Every room in the main house...parlor, dining room, sitting room...were inviting and comfy. The food was delightful and all had a Swiss/German treatment. I had oh so tender venison which was marinated and served with Spaetzle and red cabbage...kind of in the style of saur bratten.
Our hosts were very accomodating. We dined with locals who frequent the Inn and the conversation was lively. Breakfasts and conversations with Lara were equally enjoyable. A refreshing change from our busy existence.
I can highly recommend this as a wonderfully romantic getaway. You won't be sorry. We will be back and it won't take 26 years this time.

Having had dinner at Squire Tar Box a couple of times we can only recommend it as the best in the area. Reservations are required and it's a bit off the beaten path, but definitely worth it. Classic European or American, venison or fish, or anything else - just terrific, in a wonderful setting. Only place we know where you can have Swiss wine for hundreds of miles!
We didn't stay at the Inn.

tranquility, a warm welcome, good food cooked using fresh produce...a feeling that you are in your own home, only being pampered- really lovely experience.
to wake in the morning and watch the wild turkeys grazing, then to be welcomed by the dogs.
lots to see in the neighbourhood- a wonderful break, especially after the city!

We recently returned from a 10 day vacation in Maine and fortunately spent 2 nights at the Squire Tarbox Inn. Ronni greeted us upon arrival, showed us around, gave us the history of the Inn and took us to our beautiful, spacious room. We looked out over the gardens and it was beautiful. We were given wonderful suggestions of sights to see and special, out of the way drives to take during our 2 days. Dinner at the Inn was first class with Mario and Lara coming over to the table to chat. Breakfast was delicious. All homemade granolas, blueberry muffins, eggs, Pancakes, bacon, sausage. All was fresh and presented beautifully. The family is truly special and so is a stay at the Inn.

We traveled to Maine over Labor Day weekend and renewed our acquaintance with the Squire Tarbox Inn where we had stayed about 25 years ago. Everything about the stay was great. Lara greeted us and showed us around. We spent time by the water enjoying the late afternoon sun. We had a pre-dinner drink on the porch watching the sunset and then had a fantastic meal. My wife had scallops and I had haddock. Our bedroom upstairs in the front was very nice and the bed, pillow and linens were very comfortable. Breakfast the next morning was delicious, especially the free range eggs. We enjoyed meeting Lara and Ronni. We will not wait another 25 years to return.
