I have stayed at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda numerous times over the years for NIH meetings and other work in the Bethesda / Washington, DC area. I have tried almost every hotel in Bethesda, but the Hyatt has been my favorite over the years due to its ideal location. Located just above the Bethesda Metro station, the hotel is extremely accessible for those comfortable using the Washington Metro. I usually walk to NIH when the weather is nice (1 mile or about 20 minutes) or I take the red line 1 stop when the whether is not ideal. There are a tremendous number of restaurants in the area, but it is an easy 20 minute Metro ride to downtown DC for anyone interested in getting out of the area.
While I have stayed at the Hyatt Bethesda more than any of the other Bethesda hotels, it may be time to look for a new hotel. The hotel is not aging well, and there appears to be a lack of effort to fix the problems. The internet has been a chronic problem in this hotel, and it was completely down most of the time during my last stay. Even when it was up, the signal in my corner room (409) was very weak, and several times I lost important documents that were being transmitted. Another chronic problem is the television remotes which did not work either this stay or my last visit. The furniture is very worn with holes in the chairs, and the electrical sockets in the desk were not functional.
There was one positive during this stay. The service at the front desk was far better than in the past even though one employee was gossiping in my presence regarding a television star coming for dinner at Morton's which is located in the lobby. The front desk employees went out of their way to help me when the internet was down, and they seemed genuinely concerned about the problems.
