Owner description: The schooner SULTANA is a replica of a 1768 British revenue cutter that enforced the hated Tea Taxes in the years leading up to the American Revolution. Today, SULTANA sails as a schoolship providing programs in American History and Environmental Science for more than 5,000 students each year. SULTANA also offers regular weekend sails for the general public.

The schooner Sultana is a grea tall ship and should be seen. She is part of a weekend that everyone should attend. Usually the first weekend of November Chestertown has the Sultana Project's Downrigging Weekend. We went on Saturday and it was fabulous. Not only was the Sultana there but 5 other tall ships. The weekend is full of free activites and sights to see and explore around this great little town. I would suggest spending the whole weekend starting on Friday because there is so much to see and do.

I have never had a bad experience with Sultana Projects. The first time I visited was when my Sea Scout Ship sailed to Chestertown on our summer long cruise, and they were kind enough to accommodate a special private tour of Sultana just for us. I visited again in 2008 for Downrigging Weekend, as well as Downrigging in 2013. Sultana is a beautiful little ship, and such a great resource for hands-on education. It is definitely worth a walk to the water to see her, and if you happen to have a chance for a tour, don't miss out!

A great way to spend a few hours sailing on a beautiful schooner on the scenic Chester River. The friendly crew is eager to teach you about the boat's history and the environs. You will be offered a chance to take the tiller in your hand and sail the vessel on the river. This adventure is great for people of all ages. At the end of the sail, the crew will fire one of the ship's guns. Take a tour down below and see how the crew lives on an ocean worthy vessel.
