Description: Duarte Rebolo was born in Madeira Island, Portugal, a popular European tourist spot. His career in restaurant service began there and so far has spanned about 25 years. He left Madeira to work for Celebrity Cruise Lines. It was here that he worked with world renowned Grand Chef Michel Roux. It was here that he met his wife Linda, and decided to move to the Washington area. While here in Washington, he worked at The Water Gate Hotel with Jean Louis Pallidin until Jean Louis Left. At this point the Pallidin became Aquarelle and the Chef was Robert Weidemaier. Duarte continued to work at The Watergate until his dream of opening his own restaurant came true. Tavira opened in November of 1999. The cuisine is primarily traditional Portuguese, as well as Mediterranean dishes. It has been given favorable reviews from the Washington Post, Washington Diplomat, The Gazette, Bethesda Magazine and Washingtonian Magazine 100 Very Best Restaurants. Duarte's professionalism, attention to detail and hard work will make you Dining experience a deligtful virtual escape to Portugal

“Delicious and quaint”

Very good. Relatively quaint. In the basement if an office complex. Food was good. Service good. Lots of (maybe too much) cod on the menu?

“Consistently A Good Experience”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

May 2013

This is one of our favorite restaurants.

The food is predictably good, the service is excellent - we have always been pleased with the service staff (especially a new waiter, Albero, who was trained by the manager and promoted to waiter from busboy), and it is a good price performer.

It impressed me that the manager is tuned into identifying staff with potential and investing in training them. It certainly creates a happy team of professionals who aim to make the diner's experience a very pleasant and welcoming one. This includes the delightful hostess who always greets patrons with a smile.

An additional draw to the restaurant is the super underground free parking for dinner (any maybe lunch) which allows you to walk directly into the restaurant without going outside. Given the parking challenges encountered in the Bethesda area, Tavira's is a winner as there is no hassle!

We particularly appreciate being able to request and get a table in one of their intimate side rooms which are quieter than the main dining room (which isn't particularly loud). Any of the side rooms would be a good choice for a private dinner party of about 20 or so people.

“Room for improvement”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

We were looking for a quiet restaurant for a family dinner with a hearing impaired family member and saw recommendations for Tavira. Yes, it is relatively quiet for dinner, especially at an early hour. But it was disappointing in other ways. It's in the basement of an office building, and despite the Portuguese paintings on the wall, it does have a basement-y, cinder block feel to it -- windowless and low-ceilings.

One of our party ordered a steak, medium rare, but it came virtually uncooked and had to be sent back. The other dishes for our party were good (fish and chicken, both quite flavorful) but the side vegetables were soggy and over cooked. The desserts were all too sugary -- but we probably should have ordered something less sweet to begin with.

The wait staff, while friendly, did not seem to realize that they had to slow down and speak more clearly for the benefit of the one in our party who uses hearing aids. We are very used to dealing with this problem, which happens everywhere, though we are always happy to praise restaurants with staff with staff who listen carefully and communicate clearly when informed that a customer needs an extra effort taken because of a hearing impairment. Even with normal hearing customers, it's not a good idea to rattle off the specials too quickly!

So, all in all, a mediocre experience.

“Not with Groupon”
Reviewed 12 April 2014

Went there because I had a Groupon for lunch. Turns out there were items on the menu that are not eligible for Groupon use. Waiter was totally inadequate. Couldn't explain items on the menu when asked.nNo other wait staff was there in the restaurant; he seemed to be all alone. Don't buy the Groupon for this restaurant expecting to use it.

“Fabulous Find!”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

Tavira is underneath a large office building and a little difficult to find as you always expect to enter through a lobby. However, the entrance to this restaurant is through the parking garage. Once inside, you are transported to a village in Portugal, nicely decorated, not overdone or kitsy. The food is always unusual and absolutely delicious. We discovered this restaurant years ago when my mother moved into the area and went there with some of her widow friends. We have rediscovered this restaurant and have been there twice in the last month. The specials are absolutely delicious, the fish cooked perfectly with a crispness to the outside and buttery soft and flaky on the inside. The salads are a combination of flavors that linger on the palate, not too overdone with dressing. This is a great place to take guests from out of town, to meet with old friends, and have a nice, easy dinner without pressure to get through the meal. About a month ago, we were the last in the restaurant because we lingered so long over our meal. However, we never felt like they were in a hurry to get rid of us and close up. That was special!!
