“What was gone wrong.”
Reviewed 21 February 2014

First time i'd been in the pub since the Refurb.

In the lounge area, there is a stupid tiny bar... Considering this is the place where most people order, it makes no sense.

So i went up to order drinks, there were three people in front of me, and two people serving at the bar - no problem i thought..... It took 15 minutes, i kid you not. Lords knows what took so long. it seemed the barman wasn't capable of taking a food order from the customer in front of me.

When i finally got served, i ordered a lager and a hot chocolate - making the hot chocolate took 2 of them 5 minutes.... I mentioned the barman about the wait, but he seemed unable to talk.... Strange.

So 20 minutes in i was finally sat down with two drinks. Our intention was to eat, but when we'd decided what to order the Q at the bar was 5 deep, and i couldn't face waiting again.

This is a lovely pub (Aside from the ridiculous tiny bar in the lounge) and i'm sure the food is still excellent, but the bar staff are not up to scratch.

Had a great one night stay at this pub. Fantastic, clean and comfortable rooms with exceptionally comfortable beds. Great p food and very attentive and eager to please staff. Hambleden is a beautiful place and I will definitely return for a longer stay next time.

I stayed at the Stag and Huntsman for a couple of nights midweek. The room was comfortable and clean and the staff friendly and helpful. There was a good selection of wines and real ale available and I really felt at home here. The food was exceptionally good , right at the top end of what you might expect for pub grub. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

A group of us went here for Sunday lunch whilst on a walk around the Oxfordshire countryside. We were recommended to book in advance and pre-order our food, as we were a group of 8. When we arrived it wasn't particularly busy. There seemed to be a lot of staff, but they didn't seem that interested in us. We struggled to order drinks - with the waiter not able to write down a simple order. The food was pretty abominable - only one person of the group was happy (vegetarian lasagne). The Steak and Mushroom Ale Pie was bone dry, the haddock and new potato salad was basically a plate of potatoes drowned in mayonnaise. When we came to pay, we had as many problems as we did with ordering the drinks. It was so disappointing - we wished we'd waited and eaten at a pub in Henley. For an English pub in a beautiful location, it could be a real destination, but the bland interior, poor service and unimaginative and poorly prepared food lets it down.

I got married recently, and had the reception in the little church hall in Hambleden. I thoroughly recommend that by the way - do it yourself, set up the room how you want it, buy your wine and book your chef to cook your menu. So much better than some hotel food and beverages manager telling you what you can and can't do. I also recommend getting married. My wife made me write that last bit.

Anyway, the hotel, that's what we're here for. It's great. A really lovely, charming, English (with the capital E) hotel in a beautiful village. There's not a lot of options if you want to stay in Hambleden to be honest, but that's fine, as if there were this place would still be the best.

The rooms are well presented, large and (I think) all differently decorated. The bed was comfy and the bathroom we had in our room was vast. I have to admit to returning back after the party at about 3am and misunderstanding the showering system. Luckily it is set up as a wet room (or at least I hope it is) so no major harm done.

The breakfast was delicious - we had eggs benedict and it was very tasty, and not so rich that you feel your cholesterol level rising as you eat it - so often the case with this dish. They also have a lovely garden and bar and serve decent beer, if you're that way inclined.

That's all I have to say really. It was a short stay, but I couldn't fault it. Very suitable for a romantic night away, short break in the country, or for some god-awful corporate event too I imagine.

The room we had (no 8) was fantastic - but the lack of a shower was a poor omission - in such a large en-suite - no excuse for no shower. Bathroom mirrors in the wrong place. The room was pricey and we expected the food to be of a similar standard - definitely not though - average pub grub (breakfast was excellent though).
Would stay again buy wouldn't eat in the evening again. The bar maid's swearing wasn't attractive! Sack her! The Heathrow traffic starts at 5.00am so close your windows if you want a good sleep. I thought Hambleden had its own airport! The noise from staff and customers leaving through the back door wasn't appreciated in the small hours.

Room Tip: Get the expensive ones - keep the widows shut.

Wonderful pub in a beautiful setting, perfect getaway in the Chilterns which would be a perfect base for ramblers or those just seeking a quiet bolt hole in which to retreat. The village itself small comprising of a quaint post office/tea room, really was like stepping back in time about 50 years. We ate in the restaurant at Stag and Huntsman which we found a little disappointing both with the unimaginative menu and the ambience in the restaurant itself, perhaps a little background music would help. Our room was cosy and nicely decorated with a large comfortable bed, breakfast the next morning was better than our evening meal served by smiling, pleasant staff.
