Geatz'z food was OK but not something to rave about. We went here looking for a "local" experience and it did seem as if many diners were Cumberlanders and I suppose we just got what Cumberlanders want when they go out ... regular quality crab cake and heavily battered fried oysters. Service was good and they had a few football games on wide screen TVs on a Saturday night.

I usually don't put much stock in small-town family-owned restaurants because they have a limited incentive to innovate, and keep serving the same, cheese-, sauce- or grease-drenched meals year in and year out.

But I did have a terrific meal at Geatz's. The beer was good, the food was good, and the atmosphere (the redeeming quality of a small-town restaurant) was great.

Apparently it's the law that every restaurant in Maryland must offer crab cakes, so I ordered them, and they were quite good. So was the French onion soup, the shrimp appetizer, and my salad.

I'm not going to tell you it's El Bulli, but it was very good. Head and shoulders above your typical small-town diner fare.

The French fries are good. The onion soup okay. The waitress was decent. The bar is lacking Vodka. The salad is fine if you like iceberg lettuce. The seafood salad had 2 shrimp in it. Good thing it was fairly cheap.

From the outside, Geatz’s restaurant in Cumberland, Maryland looks like some run down red brick industrial building, or maybe an old Elk’s lodge. People do not go there because of the curb appeal. Inside, Geatz’s shows its family-run origins with cozy tables and booths in a no-nonsense open room that seems to draw a lot of locals, always a good sign.
We were there on a bus trip with a prearranged selection of dinners and swarmed in with over 50 people. We found the necessary tables all ready and reserved and the wait staff fast, friendly and eager. Every one acted as if they were thrilled we were there.
Most of us got a combination of crab cake and ribs. I know it sounds weird, but that's what they offered. Now any restaurant that is 160 miles from the Chesapeake Bay yet has the confidence to serve crabcakes to a busload of people from the Eastern Shore is living dangerously, like a Seattle restaurant serving chili to Texans. A good crabcake is a delicate thing and the farther you get from the bay, the less palatable local versions tend to be, but we found the Geatz's crabcakes as good as the ones at home. As for the ribs, they were wonderful, but were too much of a good thing. Henry VIII would have felt stuffed after that meal.
Long time family owned places like Geatz's are disappearing every day, but they offer an authentic, non corporate dining experience. We left hoping Geatz's will continue and thrive for many years to come.
After all, when we come back to Cumberland we plan to eat there again..

Restaurant was within walking distance of our B&B and was convenient for a casual dinner. We ordered a variety of items and some were better than others. If you don't get too fancy, you should be okay. Definitely popular with locals and while it had a "homey" look and feel, it wasn't especially friendly. Service was okay... no complaints.
