“Serious design issues with room, but nice location”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

Location: Smack downtown, perfect for ambling around the shops in the city center
Room: I had an upgraded double bed suite and it was lacking. There were no available outlets to charge our phones and tablets. None. There was no hook to hang your towel in the bathroom. There were no shelves or space to store your toiletries near the sink. The shower was handicapped though and had a bench which was handy for my mom and for showering with our baby.
Restaurant: We dined in the restaurant and had a nice meal but the average age of diners is 70+. It's definitely a hot spot for the elderly.
General: I liked the lobby seating and nooks for sitting. They had water and apples available and downstairs restrooms and parking. The staff were helpful. However, when we went to check in, the first attendant said they had no rooms available. So, we asked another person if they had recommendations for where else to stay and she said they did have a room available, so not sure what was up with that.

Thank you to the staff at the Tidewater Inn for supporting us in a seamless business meeting that included individuals from France, Turkey, Canada and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Donna and other staff at the front desk showed exceptional customer service to many of our delegates that spoke English as a second or third language or didn't speak English at all. The reservations, check in and check out process for them was perfectly executed. We also had a networking dinner one evening with a number of local business entrepreneurs and leaders. The banquet managers helped us stay on schedule and were highly diplomatic in managing the many different cultures and languages present in one room. The food was delicious and the atmosphere in the Oxford Room and Library was perfect! Lauren in sales and events guided us throughout the entire planning process and checked in many times with us while on site. I highly recommend the Tidewater Inn for any multi-day business event. The staff is well-versed in supporting the needs of a business group that rival large chain hotels in or near large cities. Also, the historic town of Easton is right at the doorstep, which provides a nice reprieve during meeting breaks and downtime. Thank you Tidewater Inn for a memorable event!

Thank you so much for such a wonderful review of the Tidewater Inn as a meeting destination.

Even though we are an independent hotel, we are able to compete with chain-hotels in terms of staff service and amenities and oftentimes offer higher-quality meal options due to our award-winning chef team.

I’m pleased that you were able to enjoy our recently renovated Oxford Room and Library! Using both rooms for your event allowed for a welcoming reception for your attendees in a “home like” atmosphere, which allowed you to then welcome your guests into the formal dinner area in the adjoining room that is connected by elegant French doors.

We enjoyed having so many cultures under one roof for your event and best wishes for your next meetings in Turkey and France! We look forward to welcoming your back to the Tidewater Inn when your meeting returns to Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Sincerely,

Lauren Catterton

Hotel is conveniently located in the historic district, which means easy access to shops and restaurants. Staff are pleasant. However, hotel offers fewer amenities than similarly priced accommodations. No fitness center, no pool, no spa, and common areas were crowded and noisy (hotel is popular for weddings). For example, the courtyard was the only outdoor quiet space, but was closed for a couple of hours to guests who weren't part of the wedding. I understand they need to promote the venue for additional income, but it's tough on those of us just wanting a quiet weekend getaway.

A couple of years ago, I told the Tidewater Inn that I planned to propose to my then-girlfriend on their property. I shipped them some things in advance for the room. The staff came through and everything went according to plan. The property is beautiful and historic and in an unbeatable location.

My wife and I are now married, and we welcomed our first child in January. The Tidewater Inn will always be part of my story.

We made reservation at last minute. Arrived and checked into Room 343. Small room in back overlooking a parking lot. Clean and nice but we pulled window draperies back to find the large, screenless window unlocked and as we discovered, unlockable. The window frame was chipped, worn..but our first thought was how very dangerous this would have been if a child had raised this "light" window. My sister, who has sleep issues, was very concerned about this and we raised our concerns to the front desk,
upon check out. They said they would make a note of this....we enjoyed our stay. This is a beautiful, historic inn..but it is in need of some paint and tlc..our carpet had huge stain..tub was not clean..but again, I write this to bring window issue to the hotel's attention. We heard families in other rooms...hopefully this open, screenless, open window issue will be remedied. Curtains do not stop little ones!

I stayed here for one night with an old high school friend on a weekend getaway. The room was a good size (small bathroom) and we had a great view from the charming floor-to-ceiling windows. The hotel overall feels a little rustic, but it's not run down and the room was very clean. Lovely soft bed linens and fluffy towels. Friendly personnel. Perfectly well located. Would come again even though it's a little expensive.

You have highlighted our assets well! Thank you for your time in writing such a complimentary review! The Tidewater Inn is perfectly located in Easton and provides old-world charm.

Since your stay we have painted many sleeping rooms, renovated an event room (the Oxford Room) as well as the Library, which is located in the front of the hotel on the main floor, off of the lobby. Also, all exterior and interior windows have been painted as well as other items on our exterior.

Please know we tend to have mid-week specials so should you decide to stay with us again in the future, I would encourage you to book your reservation under one of the specials.

We hope to see you again in 2015!

Sincerely,

The Tidewater is a beautiful, historic hotel and located in a delightful historic district that you can explore all day. That said, it's a small town and they roll up the sidewalks pretty early, including the hotel bar; last call was 11 pm at the Tidewater's Hunter's Tavern and evidently also at Tarrant's Cafe on the opposite corner. So, that pretty much forces you back to your room and that's where the trouble begins. The room had become hot, too hot for us to sleep. While there was an HVAC control on the wall, it was clearly for show or placebo effect as it had no direct bearing on the temperature in the room, in fact it was locked out from guest control. Upon complaint to the desk, the clerk changed the AC setpoint in our room from her computer and offered to turn off the heat to our room. She then said it would take awhile to cool off and offered us a fan, which we accepted. The heat never turned off and the AC never kicked on. We had to open the window and put the fan blowing 40 degree air in from the outside to make it tolerable, but then we had to deal with bright streetlights from the outside as well as insane traffic noise for what is otherwise a small, sleepy town. At some point in the night, my wife went into the bathroom to sleep on the floor to get away from the light and noise. She would have slept in the tub but the faucet was leaking. After all night of the fan blowing from an open window it finally got down to 72 degrees as we were getting packed to check out. Overall, it is a beautiful, gorgeous, elegant property brimming with history, but if you don't enjoy the occasional nap in a sauna or oven, then you will also have a miserable night's sleep. My advice would be to stay at a modern hotel and the next morning come to brunch at Hunter's Tavern, see the lovely lobby and architecture then walk around the lovely town of Easton.

Room Tip: If you can, get a room that does not overlook the street because if you need to open a window for te...

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on TripAdvisor. I apologize for your experience with the heat in your room. As I mentioned in our email exchanges about this matter, I have reversed the charges for your stay.

In our communications, I also let you know that it turns out there was a specific malfunction with the HVAC system that night – a valve did not open as it should have to allow cooler air to enter your room. The Front Desk Agent’s actions would have allowed for the cooler air had the valve not malfunctioned. In addition, your in-room control should have allowed the same change, and we’re looking into whether there is an issue with the control in that room.

I thank you for your positive comments about our restaurant, Hunters' Tavern and our picturesque and historic town.

We hope that you will consider staying with us in the future – please contact me directly should you wish to do so, and I will take care of your reservation!
