“Very Peaceful”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

What a beautiful peaceful getaway! The cabins are far enough apart where you definitely have your privacy. And the size and set-up is perfect for a couple or small family. You could go to the lodge (which is immaculate) for breakfast/dinner or have it brought to you, or even explore Town. With Geo-caching and sites there was a lot to do. Plus when you wanted to relax, you have a great porch with rockers. I hear it's just as beautiful in the winter, can't wait to go back one day.

Just returned from a three night stay in late July 2014. What a peaceful, and relaxing place, that is off the beatened path. The cabin we stayed in was roomy, clean and had a king sized bed. With most of the comforts of home and the muffins and juice delivered to our cabin door each morning we almost forget that we were out in the middle of a forest. Even nicer was that within a short walk was one of the better restaurants we have ever eaten at. The smoked venison sausage, trimphet mushroom risotto and lodge meatloaf are just a few of the delicious items on their menu. All the staff were friendly and welcoming If you are looking for a place to get away from a hectic pace of city life you can't beat this place.

We spent three nights over July 4th weekend. The place is in the middle of nowhere. It is dog-friendly. There is no internet access (either Wifi or through cell coverage, which was very weak; could barely send and receive email). They say they have Wifi (and it is set up) but there is zero bandwidth, so don't expect to search the web or use apps. The people in reception and at the restaurant were very friendly. Other than hanging out or exploring the trails on the grounds, there's nothing to do on the property. Activities in the surrounding area are all about an hour away. There was good whitewater rafting in Friendsville. Hiking in the area was ok. The food at the restaurant was decent; some dishes were very good and some were very average. The menu is the same every day; no daily specials etc. Prices were somewhat high, but not insane. The cabins were clean and relatively comfortable. No complaints, but nothing spectacular either. The rates are not inexpensive for what you are getting, but not crazy high either. The upstairs in the lodge had some books and games and a very small, old TV. It would be nice if they added a pool table, dart board and ping pong table to add some activities for guests to do. We were lucky since the weather was great, but if it had rained, it would have been nice to have some added indoor activities. If I owned the place, I'd probably also add a drop down big screen with HD projector so you could show sporting events and movies up there.

I would recommend this place if you live within a couple of hours and are looking for a relaxing, low-key weekend away; particularly if you have dogs and want to bring them with you. Even though we had a decent time, I wouldn't return; too far from us and not enough to do to make it worth returning. The Poconos and Berkshires are closer for us and there's more to do.

MC1969Traveler,

Thank you so much for your time! As always, we appreciate the feedback. We love hearing what our guests experience while they are with us, from top to bottom!

Internet is unfortunately a problem we've been fighting for a long time. While the main Lodge does have Wi-Fi, albeit from a satellite connection which is painfully slow, the cabins unfortunately do not. Aside from affixing each cabin and yurt with its own satellite dish, there is no source for internet, as neither DSL or broadband lines have reached us yet. Technically, if you have an Ethernet cable, you can hook it into the phone line, however dial-up service is even slower than satellite!

Believe it or not, cell phone service has come a long way over the years. Several years ago, there was no service anywhere on our mountain!

There was also point in time when we did have a game room, however, it remained largely unused. The majority of the guests that come to us prefer to use our 14 miles of hiking trails (cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter), relax on their porch or at our main Lodge, get a massage and just all around unwind. We have a wealth of activities in our area as you mentioned. This is the perfect spot to be situated with high quality downhill skiing, horseback riding, architecture excursions, white water rafting, fly fishing and hiking all within an hour's drive. In fact, many of the packages that we offer are based around these activities!

Our no TV stance comes with the owners' mission in opening the business; a place to enjoy nature. While we do have an old rear-projection television for those cannot-be-missed sporting events, that is not what we're really all about. Additionally, since it is situated directly above our dining room, it would interfere with the restaurant guests intimate dinner conversation.

You said it perfectly when you said "a relaxing, low-key weekend away," as that is what we strive to be.

Once again I truly appreciate your time and hope to see you again in the future!

Sincerely,
Emily Newman-Edwards, General Manager

We have stayed at SRL half a dozen or more times over the years. The staff continues to be among the best, most professional, and friendliest I have encountered in all my travels.

On my last visit, we stayed in one of the new yurts. They are not quite finished (most notably no back porch or fireplace), but we were eager to be guinea pigs, and happily, the yurts are lovely. It was near record highs on our trip and during the day it was quite uncomfortable hot, but at night, with a couple of fans going and the windows open, it was splendid. The king sized beds are heavenly. The front porch has two chairs, and we sipped on drinks out there as the coolness began to settle in around us. Once the landscaping is in, and sunshades added to the skylight and front porch, the yurts will be spectacular year-round. For now anyway, there is still much construction going on - but all during the day, when you are likely to be out enjoying the hiking trails, mountain biking, or other excursions in the area.

As with the cabins, they deliver a basket to your door each morning (a late 8:00 for us early risers) with your choice of juice, freshly made muffins, the day's events, and a newspaper.

We had both lunch and dinner at the Lodge restaurant. The food is quite good. I had the lamb merguez and the pork rack while there, but they have great vegetarian and gluten-free options. The wine and beer options have improved and are quite decent now.

If you want a romantic getaway, come here. It isn't cheap, but it is beautiful, quiet, and you will be spoiled rotten. I would stick to the cooler months of the year personally...in the winter you can snowshoe right off of your front porch!

Oh, one last note. I appreciate the effort the owners have put into being good neighbors and stewards of the land. Whether it be recycling, the solar panels, collecting winter coats each year for the needy, raising money for the local habitat for humanity, or the myriad other things they do above and beyond, this guest is grateful for it.

Green Features: Top notch. I discussed this in the review itself, but they go above and beyond. I think they recycle the coking oil even!

Our first visit and it exceeded every expectation! The food in the lodge restaurant was superb and only surpassed by the excellent wait staff. All the employees at SRL we encountered during our stay were very accommodating and did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. The trails are very well marked and offer a wide range of levels. There was plenty of deer to keep our dog excited and constantly on the lookout. Took a day trip to Deep Creek Lake State Park for canoeing. Muffins and orange juice brought to your door every morning…what a wonderful way to start the day. We can’t wait for our next visit!

Room Tip: We stayed in #15, middle of the row. It was situated so we had plenty of privacy on the porch.

Although the grounds surrounding the new yurts are still developing, the inside experience of the Yurts is way beyond our expectations. There is something quite magical about these 30ft diameter circle "tents" with the 2 6 six beams that rise to a glass dome. We were lucky, (and I am not kidding) to spend a night when it rained the entire night. The sound of the rain on the YURT top was like a lullaby. The owners were quite attentive at honoring our requests for an extra flashlight, and the amazingly luxurious robes. They even brought us a bottle of champagne and flutes in a basket! The cuisine at the lodge is the best food I have ever had in Maryland. And the server was just genuinely nice and efficient. The front desk has some glitches to work out with operations and billing, but overall our memories and stories speak of what a fantastic glamping trip we had. If you have any doubts...forget them and do it. We will be back.

We had a great, relaxing vacation at Savage River. Cabins are rustic but somehow contemporary - so different than any other place I've stayed. The bottom floor had a seating area, small dining table, gas fireplace, large full bathroom with separate sink outside the bathroom, coffee station, small fridge, book shelf to peruse. Note: there is no tv. This made me nervous at first but I actually didn't miss it! The room was so cute, we cancelled our reservation at the Lodge Restaurant and had them deliver food to our cabin both nights we stayed. the bed is upstairs. the stairs are amazingly crafted wood slabs but a bit treacherous. I have an elderly dog that needs to be carried up and down the steps and all I could think about was how awful it would be if I fell.

Client Service: Excellent. (And I am very picky.)

Amazing wine list (over 250 bottles). My glasses of Merlot and Cabernet were smooth and delectable.

-4 beers on tap when we went to the Lodge (Sam Adams seasonal, heavy seas black cannon, devils backbone Vienna lager, porter)

-breakfast: I had the hunter omelet and my husband had the tomato florentine. The omelets were so fluffy and soft that we inquired how they were prepared -- cream and clarified butter. It was the best omelet I've ever had. The sausages were sausage "meatballs" that had a mixed spiced savoriness.

-room service: we ate dinner twice via room service. The service was friendly although they did forget two parts of our order (a side and an item off the dog menu). When we called to infirm them, they promptly delivered the items within 10 minutes, apologized and took $10 off the bill.

-duck ravioli appetizer. I love Al dente but these were almost hard. The flavor was nice, though.

-duck breast entree - served medium was very good with a crispy salty skin to compliment the juicy pink meat. It came with a tiny side of kale.

Venison sausage- appetizer came w one sausage link for $9. It was a bit too firm but the flavor was well seasoned and not at all gamey like I thought venison we old be.

-filet mignon - cooked to medium rare (asked for rare this time) was very tender with a nice glaze sauce over Yukon puree. Nicely done but not the best I've had.

-lentil side - my husband loved them but they were a bit too plain and under-seasoned for me.

-cheese plate: excellent selection of cheeses (a hard, soft, medium firm and a very firm Bleu -impressive and experienced varieties.

-bone a petit menu - cure offerings including meatballs and peanut butter biscuits. We ordered the chicken and rice which had green beans, sweet potato atop rice pilaf. My dogs loved it of course. The portion was a bit small (we ordered the "big paw") which came in a medium soup cup -- not enough to fill a dog larger than 20#.

-dog biscuits. We must admit that we tried the Bodhi biscuits and they were really good!!! Crazy but they tasted like parmesan biscuits for people- buttery and cheesey? Our dogs were not happy that we were eating their treats! Shame on us. I do think they're a bit too rich for dogs and may have caused some "stool issues" had we given them the whole biscuit.
