The hotel itself is very nice. It's clean, the rooms are adorable, and the amenities are pretty good.
Downfalls are that the pool is only open until 9pm. There are only a few select places that you can smoke--one of them being out near the pool, but even that area gets locked at 9 pm.
The elevators are extremely slow.
The location is unbeatable: right by the boardwalk

Our first time staying at The Spinnaker, Aug 16-20. Great weather and the hotel was clean, friendly and near the end of the Boardwalk. Location is fabulous, since you are near the end of the Boardwalk, there are no stores and not much foot traffic. It is quiet, nice pool and every room has a view of the ocean! Each room has a kitchenette with a FULL size fridge, which is a big thing. You can keep ice and everything stays cold!! All workers were friendly to talk to and very helpful. There is a restaurant downstairs that serves breakfast and lunch. The restaurant also sells bags of ice, which is great. Highly recommend, especially for families with small kids. You can walk the boardwalk, take the tram or bus, very conveinent!

My family and I (two adults, two teens and one elementary-aged child) decided on a four-day, quick trip to OC this month. As we weren't staying the entire week, we figured one room for all of us would be fine and we didn't need something fancy. (Even the non-fancy hotels' rates were ridiculous as it was high season- the Hilton was asking more than $600 per night; we paid @ $320 per night for our room at the Spinnaker.) Overall, our stay was a good one, but we most likely would not return to the Spinnaker again. However, that would be just for us and I would have no problems recommending this place to others, with some caveats ...

First, the good. Location, location, location. It's in between 18th and 19th Streets, just half-a-block from the boardwalk, so the walk to the beach was super easy and quick. And the beach never got too crowded in this section, which was very nice. Most other guests in the area were families as well, which was nice. All employees we met were extremely friendly and helpful. The ladies at check-in were warm and welcoming, the housekeeping staff were cordial and super-nice (and always left us plenty of towels and made our beds and cleaned the rooms - especially the bathroom - very well each and every day), and the gentlemen who came to our room to fix our safe were prompt, professional and, again, just so nice. We could not find fault with the staff members at all, so thank you for that.

Also, the rooms were pretty well sound-proofed, to my pleasant surprise! Yes, when you are in the bathroom, you can hear rooms above / below / beside you when they flush their toilets, but we never heard doors banging or people talking or kids running around in the hallways or in the room above us. That was definitely much appreciated.

Now, for some of the things that led us to believing we probably will not return. The beds. They are small. They are NOT queens. They are double beds, which if you are fine with them, then they should work out for you. However, we are used to bigger beds so we were not as comfortable as we could have been. Also, for some reason, our room (#220) was extremely muggy, even with the AC on full blast all the time. The carpet was old and was damp all the time, and we just felt "sticky" in the room, even having just taken cool showers. It was odd, but we figured maybe because the hotel / room was older since we have never gotten that feeling from anywhere else we've stayed at in OC. Perhaps the next time management renovates, they can pull up the carpeting and juts install tile flooring instead? Because of the high level of humidity in the room, I got a bad stuffy nose / congestion that lasted the entire time when I was in the room, but cleared up if I was outside on the beach or on the boardwalk or anywhere else but that room! Again, I'm not sure if this was only our room, but you may want to watch out if you are prone to sinus infections and/or have severe environmental allergies.

These matters certainly did not take away from our enjoying our vacation. Again, the location is ideal (you are still on the boardwalk, but away from the noise and craziness), the staff members are extremely professional and helpful, and you are literally just steps away from the Sahara Cafe! For our family of five people - pretty much four adults and one small child - the size was probably just a tad too small for us, especially with three daughters and only one very small bathroom (although the use of space was done quite cleverly)! However, if you have small children and maybe have only 3-4 in your party - the Spinnaker should be a very good option for your family. Just make sure to bring extra flip-flops or slippers so you don't walk on the damp, soggy carpeting on bare feet - yuck!

Thank you for the review of The Spinnaker. All units only have two double beds and a pull out sleep sofa (double) and I am sorry that you found them small. I am happy that you enjoyed the stay despite the bed size. We do a little remodeling every year and I will make certain we add some fresh carpeting to the 2019 renovation plans.

We just ended our week long stay at the Spinnaker - here are our thoughts. If you are only looking for an affordable place to lay your head at night and don’t have any expectations regarding amenities than you will be OK. Our room comfortably fit our family of 5 space wise with two queen beds and a pull out sofa. The beds were very comfortable, the pull out was a thin mattress with the springs sticking out. The room was very clean, especially the bathroom and it was cleaned daily. We were also provided fresh linens after day three. Even though our room was nonsmoking it smelled like it had previously been a smoking room that was cleaned. We had a toaster and microwave but you could only plug in one at a time in the teeny kitchen. We had an ocean view off the corner of our balcony but could not enjoy it because half the balcony was blocked by an air conditioner which blew hot air the entire time. The pool is very small and located on top of a parking garage. Although we enjoyed the beach we were not prepared by the other Spinnaker reviews regarding the quality of this hotel. We will not be staying here again.

Thank you for leaving a comment we do appreciate the feedback. All units have 2 double beds, not queens, however they are longer than standard full beds and we are happy you found them comfortable. The sleep sofa mattresses do tend to be thin, however we do double them up for guests so they will sleep more like a bed and I am sorry that you were not told about this service. Maintenance would have fixed the spring problem if we had known about it. All of our units and property (with the exception of designated areas) are non smoking with a $250.00 imposed for guests who break the rule. We would of gladly sent the housekeeping department to
ionize the room if you would of mentioned to the front desk.. Housekeeping does only change the sheets every third day, however they do give full service daily. Guests may request additional linen changes if wanted or needed. If the front desk would of known about any of these issues we would of tried to correct them immediately .The pool is a standard size not an olympic size and
our wooden deck is very large with tables and lounge area. We do not have a parking garage. If you would like to contact me about these issues please do so at 800-638-3244 EXT #1. I do hope you would stay with us again as I can assure you will not have any of these issues.

This hotel definitely met our standards. Upon entering the hotel registration, the ladies were extremely pleasant...Ms Patty and Ms Heather..Off to a good start, nothing like pleasant and smiling beautiful faces. Upon entering our room, we were greeted with a fresh smell and a clean room with comfortable beds, kitchenette area with utensils, pots, and dishes, and a balcony to chill out on as we watched the folks head to the beach. Just a matter of steps to the boardwalk and beach. So park your car and stay put! If you’re up early, you can scout out your spot on the beach! We were able to set up our beach attire on the beach and could watch our setup from our balcony! My nieces loved the pool... the adults loved it as well! There is a deck with tables and umbrellas right next to the pool. The only issue we had is the pool area closed at 9:00 PM. We strongly recommend having this area open after 9:00 pm for the adults. We bought @ 5 dozen crabs from the Crab Stop and enjoyed being able to sit out on the deck while eating crabs and playing card games.
We are already anticipating our stay for next season! This hotel is a true gem! Ms. Ellen from housekeeping was pleasant and whatever we needed, she was very accommodating.
One last thing is the small cafe...decent prices not robbing your pocketbook! Just loved our getaway! Thank you to all for making our lil vacay very pleasant! Will definitely recommend The Spinnaker!
