Booked a single room for one night mid-week so I could enjoy a special occasion with friends. After seeing a couple of old reviews I wasn't sure what to expect. Arrived with just enough time to shower and change before I should have been joining my friends in bar. What a treat. I was quickly and politly booked in and shown to my room which was a large sized single with on-suite, flat screen tele. kettle, phone, all the towels and complimenteries you could need etc.
I arrived back at the bar in time to get a drink before we were all led to our table in the resturant. Inspite of the size of our party (18) and the other diners the staff were fantastic, serving good hot food, taking wine orders and clearing empties, spent crackers etc. Nothing seemed to much trouble and the meals were exactly as they should be, with all the trimmings and accompliments to suite. The whole experience was fantastic and we could not have chosen a better venue. We would definately go back again and I would advise anyone reading past reviews to take note of the dates of the reviews because some places do take notice of customers comments and the new management here have definately got there house in order.

First things first - Ignore any bad reviews written before mid November 2012 as this is when the new owners took over.

We stayed for 2 nights in one of the Garden View rooms. Lovely views, would be better in the summer obviously but even in December it was still lovely - magnificent old oak tree too. The rooms are great. Decadent and plush with lovely satin and velvet textures. Each room has its own character with some gorgeous period furnishings.
Walking into he cocktail bar is like walking into a 1920's manor house - beautiful huge black velvet chairs and stunning chandeliers. The main bar is large with about a dozen gorgeous brown leather sofas and an lovely central fireplace.

The staff are very friendly and helpful, always with a smile. We chatted to one of the new directors and it is evident, in the enthusiasm he showed that they plan to really make the most of this fantastic hotel (something it seems the previous owners really couldn't be bothered with). This can also be seen in the fact that there were several maintenance men touching up every slight paint scratch, minor chip or stain. It is such a beautiful building with loads of charter and quirky features I wish them all the very best - as we will most definitely be back in the summer.

The Conqueror restaurant is fantastic too - we had a beautiful meal there one evening and breakfast on both mornings was good quality all the way. The chef knows what he is doing!

On check out, I glanced at the wedding package they were advertising - if we were not already married I would definitely consider the East Close - the deal was excellent value! Last year we attended a wedding in Cambridge at the Double Tree Hilton - and it was probably twice the price of the East Close - and was no where near being in the same league - bland hotel, terrible food and a disgraceful evening buffet (they served salad leaves!!!!).

So all in all the East Close was a pleasant surprise - particularly after reading some of the previous reviews. I sincerely hope the new owners keep up their enthusiasm.

Room Tip: Garden view rooms are decorated in lovely period style. And of course lovely view of the garden.

It was a pleasure looking after you and we are pleased you can see the effort we are making. We have a huge amount of work to do here to get to where we want to be. This is probably the hardest time to take over ownership as most of the Christmas arrangements were made prior to our arrival. Its great to read your comments which are a real encouragement for us.

Stayed overnight to view the wedding facilities. The hotel is under new ownership and have launched a new wedding package which is fantastic in every respect. Having read some reviews it is reassuring to know the new owners are very much customer focused. There is no 10% service charge added to bills anymore and there's been some management changes. A breath of fresh air, can't wait for the wedding.

Room Tip: We inspected every room. There are 4 budget doubles which are really nice. The remaining House bedr...

Thank you very much indeed for your comments. Our new owners are experienced hoteliers and own other hotels in the country which have excellent reviews for this package. There are a number of areas that are being addressed of which weddings have been the first to be improved. We look forward to looking after you.

We attended my Nieces wedding which the East Close is ideal for. Our room was rather nice in the main house at top of stairs #3, but is rather overpoweringly warm in the summer and u can only open window in bathroom, but a lovely room despite that.
Food in the restaurant was just OK and rather over priced, would eat out if I ever stayed here again. Breakfast was great the first morning but disappointing the next day when they ran out of cooked items.
But the wedding was a wonderful experience with well presented and prepared food in a lovely setting.
£100 per night is just about right.
