“A Taste Explosion worth the effort...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2013

There certainly are times when you read the reviews on these websites and you are just left shaking your head wondering what these folks were thinking when they wrote the review or even if they had a solid foundation in culinary experiences to make a review in the first place. The FOOD IS AMAZING! which is why we go to any restaurant. I have read reviews that downgrade this place because you have to pay cash (which is NOT true) and that you actually have to walk 10 feet up to the counter to place your order. Are you seriously SO lazy and fat that you can't pick up your swollen chubby feet to make an order? The service has ALWAYS been wonderful here but like ANY other place when it gets busy things get hectic. And yes it is somewhat small, but is that a reason to downgrade the level of the food that they serve just because you didn't get a seat as soon as you arrived? NO!!!
Dishes which are a must try:
Dan-Dan noodles (OMG!), scallion pancakes, hot&sour soup, any pickled veggies or sweet and sour cabbage, dumplings are excellent as appetizers...
Homestyle entrée dishes are the way to go at Joe's, the kung pao is off the charts, Yu-Shiang pork unreal, scrambled eggs and shrimp a total surprise, Hot Pot w/basil, eggplant and chicken is wonderful, stir-fried pork w/hot pepper and leeks, Mongolian beef, Wonton soups, Beef noodle soup Szechuan style, any of the mixed greens sautéed w/garlic (bok choy or spinach) or Szechuan green beans... I can go on and on but no reason to do so, you get the point...
The flavors might not be what you are used to from the normal suburban Chinese joint, but that is what is glorious about this food! It isn't just the normal junk slopped out to you at the food court in your local mall or "favorite" take out joint. PLEASE take the time to enjoy something that will expand your taste and expectations and don't pay attention to the suburbanites who expect a good restaurant to be only about instant seating and cleaning your feet upon arrival... This place is ALL ABOUT THE FOOD...

“Solid Szechuan in DC Suburbs”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2013

Joe's stands out among tough competition in Rockville by delivering consistently good Szechaun food. This is not a place to order the usual American-Chinese standards; if in doubt, scan the dining room and see what's on others' tables. (Also note that while the waitresses will bring you menus, you have to place your order at the front counter.)

The menu is lengthy, but don't neglect the dishes on the board behind the counter. Seasonal specialties (like fresh vegetables) are posted here, and most items include an English translation.

Szechuan food has a reputation for spiciness, and much of it is, but the level of heat here is not overwhelming, even when a dish receives a designation of two hot peppers. The numbing designation (a star) refers not to the heat level, but to the presence of Szechuan peppercorns, which impart a tingling, effervescent sensation.

Tough to reach by public transportation, but I suppose it's doable. Twinbrook metro is roughly a half mile away, so just a walk up Rockville Pike.

“Average to good food.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2013

I came from an Asian background and visited this restaurant with two friends that grew up in the western world. When I visited them in this area, they strongly recommend that this is a "must-go" place. Knowing how Asian food should taste like and how they were modified to tailor the western appetite, I just thought "Okay, I will give it a try and I will not expect too much of it". What was more important was to spend time with my friends. To my surprise, the taste of the food was good and it tastes the way it should be. I also surprised my friends whith the Chinese Water Crest dish. They have never had it before but it was a staple item on our dining table when I grew up. The vegetable is inexpensive and every family could afford them. It's a very different taste. It looks like a tube (it's called "heartless vegetable" due to its hollow tube structure and also had a Chinese mythology story behind it). It's chewy but crisp. It just tastes like what my family would put on the table. I was very happy.

I would give this place perhaps a four star but decided to downgrade one level for two reasons. First, you must pay cash and second, you pay when you order and you order at the cashier's workstation. I am not sure why they do it, but I think they call it "table service" for a reason. Other than that, I don't really have too much to complain about. I rated service as "poor" solely for this reason. When the waitress delivered the food, she was nice. The poor rating reflects the management's questionable decision, not the staff.

“One of the area's better Chinese restaurants”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2013

Having moved here from the New York area, a primary assignment is to find a new favorite Chinese restaurant. Joe's Noodle House is in the running. The place looks right out of the 60's with cloth napkins. You order you food and then they bring it to you; it's an unusual arrangement but it works. Portions are large; spiciness reigns in a good way. The menu is not your typical Chinese place in America; there are plenty of dishes to try that you won't find anyplace else. We took home a very large bag of leftovers for another meal. Lots to explore here!
