“"A gem in southern Maryland."”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

We visited this lovely Inn in October, which was a lovely and quiet time of year. The Inn is beautifully decorated and in a wonderful waterfront spot with a hiking trail going right through the front yard. It looks like they have a lot of wedding business, probably in the warmer months. Nearby historic St. Mary's City is an informative and entertaining way to spend the day. We found no fault with the Inn itself, and breakfast and lunch are available on site. One slight problem is its remote location, and the relative scarcity of nearby places to have a good dinner.

So glad you enjoyed your stay! The country ambiance does come at a price, restaurants are a bit of a drive. Watch for The Inn’s wine tasting dinners and overnight packages -- the next, Bountiful Harvest, will take place on November 15.

I have ran the trail that goes around this Inn but never had the chance to go in until Friday for lunch. I didn't know it was a bed and breakfast at first but fell in the love with the décor and just the overall ambiance of this quaint place! I felt I was back in time with the antique glasses and the tall ceilings. JoAnne was taking our drink orders and as the day went on was so kind to my friend and I and encouraged us to explore the gardens and the view of the St. Mary's River. OK, on to lunch: both had the cream of crab soup--delish! Then both tried different salads, one with beets and goat cheese (local from Loveville) and the other was a citrus salad...each with homemade dressing. We also had the bread pudding with bourbon sauce, need I say more? ha oh and lastly mojitos while we walked the grounds. Can't wait to go back again!

We visited the Inn at Broome Howard in early June. We found our room to be large and comfortable. The house is very attractive and well furnished. There is a large field in the front of the inn in which we saw numerous deer. There is a walking trail that is about 3 miles if one wishes to walk it. It is an easy walk through a very scenic wooded area. Beware lots of poison ivy and oak. The museum of St. Mary’s City is just down the road. The area around the inn is quiet and peaceful. When one goes to a bed and breakfast one usually finds the innkeepers are the owners. This inn is owned by the college. It is a business and is run that way. Our breakfasts were prepared by a business that caters for the many weddings that are held at the inn and it tasted that way.

The few times we stayed at other bed and breakfast establishments we normally were hosted by the owners. There was a personal touch to everything and we had a great homemade breakfast . Our hostess at Broome Howard Inn was very pleasant but she had to get permission to do anything and there is just not that personal attention one gets at a bed and breakfast.

I would echo the comments in the previous review, especially concerning the innkeeper who was extremely friendly and helpful.

At present, the property appears to be run as three semi-independent operations: the inn-keeper deals with the bedrooms and breakfast; a caterer provides lunches and finally, the grounds and the premises are (I think) maintained by the city of St. Mary's. In my opinion, the property would benefit greatly from a coherent development plan which balances the various demands being made upon it together with a full-time resident manager who would be responsible for all aspects of running the property on a day-to-day basis and with developing it in accordance with the plan.

I would not want the foregoing comments to detract from the fact that this was a lovely place in which to stay. I do recommend The Inn at Brome Howard strongly. What a pleasure it would be to return in a little while to find that The Inn is going even further to meet its very considerable potential as an important destination for diners, overnight guests and high-end social events in Southern Maryland.

First off, this is a B&B is in transition, but the innkeeper, Leigh, was super friendly and helpful. The breakfast was amazing and the view to the St. Mary's River cannot be beat. That said, a few things that might help would be to have a sitting out area for the guests, there is a great library room facing the river just meant for reading a good book - but at present the whole first floor is devoted to the restaurant which is not a part of the inn. The restaurant has sort of taken over at the inn's expense - just a personal thought. Also, maybe a small television in the rooms - or even in the common room, would be nice to catch the weather or just lounge since there is no "nightlife" within 10-15 miles. Another thought would be to the person/persons responsible for the grounds, here is a beautiful 1840s historic home with a wonderful setting and the landscaping is definitely suburban track home. One would expect trees and lawn with the requisite brick patio for wedding receptions, but the concrete, overgrown shrubs against the house - well you get the picture - does not compliment this gem. That said, cannot wait to return in a few years and see how things have progressed.

We stopped for lunch here while touring the area. Everything was delicious, we ordered the club sandwiches which were so yummy. The place is beautiful, just perfect for a special occasion The staff was so sweet, we got there towards the end of the lunch hour, and they were very accommodating. I mentioned it was my mom's birthday, and they brought a little cake out. I would love to come back and stay a couple nights at the Inn, it was gorgeous.

Our room was clean and (like the inn itself) quite charming. Be aware, though, other than Historic St Mary's City, there is not much to do in the area--it is very very rural. Also, management needs to pay a lot more attention to small details. Some areas of the exterior of the inn seem neglected. There were problems inside, too; flowers on our table at breakfast were dead. There was a coffee maker in the hall outside our room, but there were no cups; and there were no cups or tissues in our bathroom. Our room had recently been painted and looked very fresh and attractive, but the dusty drapes and a paint can were sitting on the floor of our closet. Our sheets and towels were not changed (the room was not made up) while we were there--had some one checked, the tissue box might have been replaced. We were not informed about any attractions in the area (we stumbled on some pamphlets in a desk in the downstairs hall) or even how to lock/unlock the front door if we came in late. Breakfast was mediocre and presented in an indifferent manner by the innkeeper--who is clearly expected to do too much by her employers.
