“Small but great museum”

Cahoon Museum of American Art

Attraction details
Reviewed 30 September 2013

The museum is housed in a former farm house and former home and workplace of Ralph and Martha Cahoon who were Cape Cod artists. The exhibits consist of their work as well as visiting art exhibits. The museum has an interesting store, and next door is an antique store well worth visiting.

You could easily drive right by this splendid small museum, the former home and workplace of Ralph and Martha Cahoon, two Cape Cod artists who restored this fine example of 18th century architecture. But you are caught by the imposing antique beauty of the building itself.

Inside, another delight awaits with the exhibition of the artists' lighthearted view of Cape life and the decorated furniture that was the specialty of Martha Cahoon. Changing exhibitions every six weeks makes return visits something to look forward to. The day we were there, an exhibition entitled "Portraying African Americans with Respect" was up, an astonishing collection of late 19th and early 20th century scenes of African Americans' daily life, portraits, drawings and prints, and some castings from sections of the famous St. Gaudens bas relief at Boston Common.

The architectural features of the interior, so carefully preserved by the Cahoons, are fascinating and it is easy to imagine the life of its original 18th century inhabitants. www.cahoonmuseum.org.

This extraordinary museum of American art showcases the art of Ralph and Martha Cahoon, artists of American primitive art, and many excellent exhibitions. It has to be seen to be believed. The museum is housed in the home occupied by the artists, Martha and Ralph. The gift shop displays art of the Cape.

If you love scenes of New England villages, flirtatious mermaids, farms and harbors done in a whimsical folk art style painting, you will truly love this museum. Ralph and Martha Cahoon were also famous for their incredible "Sailors Valentine's" . They are truly breathtaking. The museum , located in Cotuit, was their home where they also produced their fabulous art works.
It is a must see if you visit the Cape and are in this area.
