Now that it's fall, if you go to the canal you're likely to the seals going through. The other day my husband and a friend swear they saw a whale surface! Whales have been known to go through, but usually stay underwater and are very rarely seen. I missed it! I did see a seal the other day and others have seen them at different times. Not as crowded now. It's just lovely. Still go for a walk each morning on the canal. You can stay as long as you'd like, but restrooms will close pretty soon for the winter. (You can always visit one of the many doughnut shops or restaurants in the area.)

When we went, we saw the bridge drop down and the train pass by. Nice time pass for 30 min or less with Kids.

You can start from this point along the canal and walk, ride a bike or roller blade for a few miles down to the other end. There are side trails off of the tarred pathway into wooded areas. Many different boats use this canal. You may even catch the fully operationally bridge go up and down.

We stopped here briefly on the way to Cape Cod and were lucky enough to see the bridge come down for a train. Great views and nice history.

The canal paths are wonderful. Seven miles long it is easy to walk and bike ride. Several places to park and get on the path on both sides of the canal.
