My Fiance' and i stay here a couple of times each summer. The setting is beautiful right on the Essex River and very conveniently located up the street from The Village and Tom Shea's restaurants. We've stayed in a few different rooms there and although they range in size they are always clean and kept up. The accommodations are simple and comfortable, there is an ice machine located outside next to the front office, and dinner is walking distance. I've found it so relaxing to sit on the lawn in a beach chair (or one of the lounge chairs already on the lawn) and watch the boats come and go. I look forward to staying here again. A great place to stay on the north shore!

As others have mentioned, the location was very nice and I appreciated the outside seating areas. The room was quiet -- no road noise. The people working at the motel were friendly. However, the room didn't seem cared for and needed work. For example: the plastic blinds on the windows were ill-fitting,so it was way too bright in the morning. The bathroom door didn't close all the way and was ridiculously noisy so that anyone going to the bathroom at night woke up others in the room, the couch was inexplicably placed halfway behind the TV. These all seem like little details, but the overall feeling was kind of depressing. For $129 a night we expected more (including shampoo and tissues!) We'd look somewhere else next time.

The Essex River House Motel's location is great. My wife and I are kayakers, and the location right on the Essex River was perfect. We were able to put the kayak in right on the property. Breakfast and dinner were the Dunkin Donuts right across the street and dinner was the famous Woodman's (fried clams, lobster, onion rings). Rockport, Gloucester, Ipswich, and Newbury were all a short drive away.
The room (#2), however, was a different story. The room was clean, but the floors were warped. The bathroom was especially bad. The bathroom door didn't close. The shower was missing the diffuser head and showering was like being waterboarded.
Also, the WIFI signal was weak and we weren't able to use the internet.

We loved our stay. Sitting in the yard watching the boats go "down river", was the perfect way to relax after a long cold winter.
Several great resturants within 3 - 5 min. walk.
great antique stores close by.
Some of the cleanest, well cared for rooms I've seen in a very long time.
Can't wait to visit again next summer.

My wife and I just spent the past weekend here. Room 15 "Eugenia" is the end unit and right next to the river which made for some peaceful and scenic views right outside our door. The room had a king bed and small shower, almost too small, but with good hot water and water pressure. Amenities are not plush by any means but the motel is a good value. It is in the heart of Essex and a very easy walk to numerous antique shops and Woodman's, the recognized birthplace of fried clams in 1914, is right across the street. The grounds are pleasant with nice river views and lots of chairs and benches for relaxing. We would definitely return here.

We stayed only one night-July 4th and it was simply wonderful. The motel is small, but clean and tidy. Perfect for our family of 3. The price was just fine at $129.00 and allowed us the check in earlier than check in time of 2 pm. The owner was pleasant and her dog, Max, was very friendly too. Not too much to do in Essex, but perfect for being close to other attractions nearby. Woodmans was a treat right across the street. Just wished this motel offered cont. breakfast.

My boyfriend and I were in town for a wedding, and decided to stay here just for a night. I can be really uptight about cleanliness, and this place was very clean, and pretty cute. I had never stayed in a motel before, but I liked it here. The room had what we needed. Bed, tv, desk, place to hang up clothes, bathroom with towels and hair dryer. The view of the river is amazing here, and it's right next to and across from restaurants and antique stores, if that's your thing. They've got an ice chest outside which was also cool, and they can offer things to do in the area. If you just need a place to hang your hat, and don't need anything super fancy, you'll like it here.

  • Liked — Location, scenery
  • Disliked — Low water pressure in shower
