Have had lunch at Sagres on two occasions in the past two months. They serve very good food in the center of a Portuguese neighborhood. 11 year old had a Jr. steak typically served with two fried eggs and fries which still was a lot of food even though a "Jr" portion. She said it was good and we brought half of it home. My Portuguese partner had baked Bacahlao o Gomes de Sa (dried cod fish with potatoes, onions, boiled egg), Second time for her as she liked it so much the first visit. I had the grilled shrimp on a skewer with rice, french fries and melted cheese. Both were very good and authentic. Atmosphere for lunch is white table cloths and a bit of a formal feel. I assume the same for dinner. Prices are reasonable.

Every time we visit family in Newport, RI area, we always drive to Fall River, MA to have our traditional dinner at Sagres. This is truly a local spot where you receive great service and atmosphere along with excellent food. The menu is extensive and has options for all tastes but the Portuguese items are the best. Do not plan to rush through your meal---just relax and enjoy the experience---the staff never makes you feel you have to vacate the table. Prices are reasonable and the servings are plentiful. It is no wonder that this restaurant is rated number one on many lists.

This long-established neighborhood restaurant in Fall River offers substantial portions of Azorean Portuguese cuisine. The decor is rather simple and unpretentious, but the food is simply superb. The seasonings are rich, full, and perfectly balanced. I am not a big fan of kale, but their Caldo Verde made the best possible case for kale soup. The other soup on the menu, a Sopa Portuguesa vegetable soup in a thicker cream broth, was also excellent.

The seafood dishes, such as the Mariscado, offer perfectly-cooked ingredients, all of which were extremely fresh -- with the exception of the small shrimp, which were (as is not uncommon in the Northeast) frozen rather than fresh. The Portuguese flan for dessert had the most subtle and delicious carmelized sauce.

The choices of wine by the glass were extremely limited, cheap, but unfortunately not very good. However, there is a good selection of very reasonably-priced wines by the bottle, including a decent number of Portuguese whites and a huge number of Portuguese reds.

The only downside to our experience was the service, which was extremely slow and inattentive. On a slow Sunday afternoon with the restaurant perhaps only a quarter full, there seemed to be an adequate number of servers, but the young man who waited on us, although very pleasant and helpful, just didn't seem to have his act together. He didn't acknowledge our presence for a full fifteen minutes after we were seated, and it took him another fifteen minutes to get a bottle of wine on the table. The food service was also extremely protracted, although the excellent food was well worth the wait.

Long, leisurely family meals are an Iberian cultural tradition. Sagres is best suited for larger parties wanting to spend a few hours in casual conversation, but it is not ideal for diners with later plans who want to eat and get out within a reasonable period of time. Menu prices are slightly higher than those listed on their bare-bones website, which apparently has not been updated for some time. But then this restaurant is not about modern technology; it is all about the preservation and presentation of a rich ethnic culinary tradition in an age of commercial eateries.
