Owner description: Cape Ann Whale Watch in Gloucester, Massachusetts provides guaranteed whale sightings for every whale watching tour out to Stellwagen Bank, a national marine preserve about 12 miles off the coast of Gloucester deemed one of the "Top 5 Whale Watching Destinations in the World" by the World Wildlife Fund due to the wide variety of whale species whom migrate to the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts every year to feed on the abundant natural resources. We provide the best whale watching in New England as it's an awe-inspiring experience which every human being should have the opportunity to appreciate. We make it a very special event. For over 35 years, Cape Ann Whale Watch has been dazzling whale watching enthusiasts with sightseeing tours aboard the largest, fastest and most elegant whale watching vessel in Massachusetts, north of Boston, Massachusetts aptly named "The Hurricane II" due to its immense size and speed as it descends upon its destination. Cape Ann Whale Watch's patrons have the opportunity to spend a lot more time with the whales than with other whale watching companies in Gloucester MA since "The Hurricane II" gets to the whales' feeding grounds with much more expediency as well as traveling home faster, therefore more time is actually spent observing whales including but not limited to Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, Northern Right Whales, Pilot Whales, Northern Right Whales, Sperm Whales, Sei Whales, Blue Whales (The Largest Whales in the Seven Seas yet seldom seen around Gloucester MA), Fin Whales, Atlantic White Sided Dolphins, Harbor Porpoises and whole host of other fascinating marine creatures as we deliver the best whale watching excursion in Massachusetts. "The Hurricane II" boasts 115 ft length with over 400 ft of whale watching room from the railings of the upper and lower observation decks for optimum whale watching conditions. There is a heated, furnished indoor cabin with a full service galley serving hot meals, snacks and cold beverages as well as a fully stocked bar with local brews, popular beer, wine and mixed drinks. Cape Ann Whale Watch is truly the finest whale watching tour in the Boston MA area offering the highest level of quality, comfort and service at the cheapest, most affordable price suitable for any family entertainment budget whether on vacation or a day trip. We offer AAA discounts on the adult tickets. We also offer reduced rates for seniors, children and military families. We go where the whales go. Our vessels communicate with each other as to the location of whales so we will go anywhere to see them on the North Shore or South Shore of Massachusetts including off the coast of Boston, Massachusetts: Salem MA, Newburyport, Cape Cod, Hampton NH, Rowley, Rockport MA, Danvers, Peabody, Swampscott, Revere, Winthrop or wherever else the whales may roam.

Cape Ann Whale Watch covers many aspects of venturing out into the ocean to spot whales, from all the different species seen, to the environmental impact we may have on these whales. The employees spend time with all passengers one-on-one. Love going on these whale watches!

Dear Leah,

Thanks so much for your kind words. We appreciate when people notice the time our educators take on board. These are all hard working college interns preparing themselves for their future, and they do a fantastic job... Thank you for noticing!

Kind regards,

Capt. Jim Douglass

We had a wonderful time. The weather was great. The educational specialists on board were very knowledgeable. We were able to see 2 different kinds of whales on our excursion. It was amazingly peaceful when the boat stopped and you could only hear the whale as it surfaced and breathed through its blow hole! Would definitely recommend!

The whole whale watching experience was great but there was one downside. We saw 2-3 balloons floating in the water on the boat trip out and the crew made a point of explaining why these can have such a negative effect on the marine life. So why not take 1 minute out of the trip, slow down and pick it up? I went on 3 different whale watching boats in New England this past week and all 3 commented on balloons seen in the water but none of the boats picked them up.

Dear Shawn T,

Thank you for your review, but I would like to point out an article posted in the Gloucester Daily Times on Saturday June 23, 2018:

Whale watch boat takes plastic from calf’s path

By Times Staff

A Connecticut passenger on a local whale watch was impressed when the boat stopped and the mates removed floating plastic from the path of humpback calf.

So much so that Ronald Pariseau of Pomfret Center, Connecticut, contacted the Times and the Cape Ann Whale Watch to thank the crew of the Hurricane II.

For a time, the calf was far from its mom and near the boat, when the plastic drifted into its path, according to Pariseau.

That’s when the captain stopped the boat and mates Nick Scatterday and Connor Douglass fished the hazardous material from the sea for proper disposal on return to shore from Stellwagen Bank.

Owner Jim Douglass said he wasn’t captaining the Hurricane II on Tuesday when the humpback Dross and her calf, about 4 months old, were spotted but his son was. The elder Douglass said stopping to pick up large pieces of trash floating along isn’t unusual for his crews.“We do it all the time,” he said.

“As part of our educational program we stress trying to help keep the environment clean,” he said. “We talkabout the dangers of balloons from parties, and plastic bags, to sea life.

“So if we see it, we try to pick it up, and hopefully that carries over so thepeople on boat can try to take the lead when it comes to plastics in the ocean.”

Soon after the trash was picked up, Dross reappeared and the calf began to nurse.

Mate Nick Scatterday of the Hurricane II gets ready to hook plastic floating near a 4-month old humpback whale. (picture attached).

Thank you,
Capt. Jim Douglass

This was a great whale watch. We saw Humpback whales, Minke whales, Atlantic White sized dolphins, and a Basking Shark. And these sighting were very up close. The boat is designed and large enough for everyone onboard to able to stand along the rail to view and take pictures. Captain Nick got us close for wonderful encounters.

I highly recommend Cape Ann Whale Watch.

This was a fantastic tour! It’s about an hour away from Boston but well worth the drive. We traveled with two families and had three children between the two families who ranged from 4-7. The guides were very welcoming and kept the kids entertained with visuals and facts about whales, a recycling magnet game, different whale toys and arts and crafts on the top deck. The food was pretty good for a snack bar and the staff was courteous and friendly. We saw several whales and the views were amazing. This tour was the highlight to our family trip. Highly recommend it!
