“Whale watching - currently with Captain Bill's”
Reviewed 9 July 2012

This summer Yankee Fleet is paired with Captain Bill's company, in the center of Gloucester and much easier to find than the Yankee Dock. The two-level boat was not crowded, had areas covered and in the open on the upper deck, and inside & as well as a small outside area on the lower deck. Light meals were served at reasonable prices inside for those interested. The best 3 features on the trip we took on July 6 were the naturalist on board, Captain Mark, and the many sightings of the animals we had hoped to see. Our college age guide, currenty doing marine research, was extremely knowledgeable about the 4 species seen (minke whales, dolphins, fin whales, & humpback whales), and also spoke about some of the historical sites as we cruised through the harbor. Capt. Mark pursued sightings of whales exhibiting various behaviors all around the feeding area about 2 hours offshore, and steered the boat so all could easily see. We returned 4 1/2 hours after our very prompt departure (information from the naturalist actually began 15 min. prior to departing), and were also happy to have free parking right beside the office/dock area. It was a beautiful, sunny, and exciting day filled wtih viewing MANY incredible creatures up close! The entire staff at Captain Bill's should be commended for a job very well done!

“sadly, disappointing this time”
Reviewed 12 July 2011

My husband had never been on a whale watch and for our wedding anniversary I booked the 1:30 trip with Yankee Fleet on 7/8. From about 1986-1997 my parents took me on a Yankee Fleet Whale Watch every summer - it's one of my favorite childhood memories. I wanted this to be a grand experience for my husband; it did not live up to our expectations. The boat was in serious need of cosmetic repair - it looked old, dated, patched w/paint peeling. The crew was fine - teenage/young adult males. The Naturalist was also fine. We saw only 3 whales during our 4.5hr excursion (2 finbacks and 1 minkie) and no humpbacks -- which is what you really want to see when you go on a whale watch! Also, another whale watching boat from Gloucester flew past us as we were on our way out into the ocean -- we never came near catching up with them. A whale watch should be a very memoriable expereince - I highly recommend taking one whenever you can. Next time we are in Gloucester we will try a different whale watch company.

“In Gloucester? Go Yankee Whale watching.”
Reviewed 11 November 2010

We had pre-bought tickets a couple of months ahead and decided to go at the end of September. The day we reserved turned out to be blowing pretty hard and they called us early in the day to let us know it was cancelled. We went back and forth on rebooking the following day, but decided at the last minute. They were able to accomodate us and are we glad they did!
It was a beautiful day and the skipper and crew did their best to make sure we got our money's worth. Dozens of sightings! One humpback came up as close as 50 - 60 feet. We would do it again.
Beverages (yes, beer too) and light snacks are available on board. Or, pack a small snack to take along.

“Yankee Fleet whale watching”
Reviewed 8 September 2010

Very informative and fun trip. Captain and crew take the time to protect the whales and give those aboard a great experience. We have been boaters for amny years but the naturalist on board was well informed and we learned alot. Gloucester is also a very good stop with good food at the Causway and an easy walk to see the town. A nice stay at the Vista with an oceanview.
