“Great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 October 2012

Samarkand Inn was the perfect location for me. I wanted to be on the water and the Inn is across the street from the beach. My room had a great view of the beach. I was also able to walk to dinner after my walk on the beach. My room was large but odly laid out. There was a nice variety of breakfast foods available. The apple coffee cake was very moist. There are a few nice areas to sit and read and still see the ocean. The Inn is only about a mile from the center of Gloucester.

During a recent business trip to the Boston Area, I took a side trip to the Gloucester beaches facing the twin light houses of Thatcher Island. The view is absolutely stunning. I decided immediately that Good Harbor beach was the next location for my wife's and my next vacation. The Samarkand Inn is the most perfectly located Inn, directly facing the Good harbor beach, with views of the light houses, and granite coast. Several rooms have excellent private views of the beach and landscape. You just cannot pay for and get this kind of ambiance in a hotel room. Nancy is taking care of a really precious piece of real estate. I'm glad she's sharing it with guests.

Room Tip: The beach facing room with an attached sun room had an incredible sleeping capacity (3 twins, 1 doub...

This small B & B is right on Good Harbor Beach, which is super convenient because parking for the beach is very pricey. We stayed in the smallest room, which had two twin beds, a sink, and shower. We had access to a full size bathroom in the hallway that was shared with one other room. There were nice common areas and a yard, both of which looked out to the beach. The hostess, Nancy, was very friendly, but not overbearing. Breakfast was simple: cereal, oatmeal, english muffins, fruit, juice, and coffee, with lots of spreads to go on the english muffins.

Have you ever watched a movie like Enchanted April? It's a story of four women, oh 1920-30ish, who decide to go (heaven forbid) unchaperoned on a trip to Italy. In the chateau they have rented, they go through the experience of blending into the locals, rediscovering themselves, and of course, love. Now while I can't promise love, I can say that a visit to the Samarkand is a rediscovery of what's important, and that the other guests you get to know, will most likely surprise you with their story. Because not everyone gets to stay at Samarkand. Many of the annual
Guests now in their 50s have been returning for 20, 30, even 40 years. or they might be grandchildren of the original guests. Like Enchanted April, the Samarkand is a little eccentric, worn but in a wonderful way. Nancy the owner is top notch and it is her home. So when you go to the Samarkand be prepared to enjoy the wonderful views and proximity on the beach ...but also be prepared to open your heart and become family. And slow the kids down for a minute to talk to the guests and to take it in and engage. Because these kind of people and these kind of experiences don't come often anymore. It is the old timey beach trip. But if you close your eyes and imagine, you might even remember what it was like many decades ago...When the silver screen acress herself, Betty Davis, lived there for a summer...

Room Tip: The front room has enough for a couple and 2 children with views right to the beach.

I've been visiting Gloucester for business and pleasure since 2000. I normally stayed at another local accomodation, however, one time in the off season, my usual place was closed. The recommended "Nancy's" place down on Good Harbor Beach. After a long phone call with Nancy, I decided to give it a try. This was a few years ago. Now, it's become a regular occasion, and Nancy and I are on a first name basis.

I write this review knowing that you might find it biased. I can honestly say that, although we've become friends, Nancy gives her all to ALL of her guests, and seeks to create a "home away from home."

The place is not fancy. And there are stairs to climb. But it is cozy, clean, her breakfasts are tasty and inviting, and the view is amazing. You are RIGHT on Good Harbor Beach, and the spectacular sunrises are worth waking up for. Her location is great, within reach of many places and sites in walking distance. Her rates are very fair.

Book early! The inn always attracts folks from around the globe, which makes breakfast and evening conversations in the main room lively. Make sure to check out the book of birthdays in the living room. It is a hoot! The inn is a great place for singles looking for a quiet get away, a girls weekend, or couples. Families will like it because it is fairly "kid-friendly" and right on the beach.

Room Tip: Room number 2 has a porch and a nice, updated bath, but it is only open "in season."

I almost didn't want to post a review because it would be great to keep this place a secret.

The Inn is located right across from the beach... no need to drive to the beach or pay the $25 parking fees for it. The Inn has great views, both from the rooms and from breakfast. Nancy, the hostess, was great... she gave us useful information and was super-friendly. She had some hot brownies waiting for us when we arrived. I would definitely stay here again!

We stayed at the Samarkand and had a remarkably good and relaxing time. The house is beautiful, located adjacent to Good Harbor Beach, which we could see from our room. Nancy, our hostess, was welcoming and helpful, always ready to have a conversation or to leave us alone, if we just wanted quiet. The breakfast was a festive occasion, with delicious home-baked just out of the oven breakfast bread. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and decided this place is just too nice to only go there once.
