“Fantastic Italian Bread”
Reviewed 5 March 2014

Whenever I get to my hometown, Gloucester, I stock up on Italian bread to bring back to NC. You can freeze it and it will stay awhile, great for toast later! Personally my favorite place for Italian bread.

“Great Sandwiches!”
Reviewed 18 November 2012

Sclafani's Bakery is a must visit for anyone coming to the Gloucester area. They sell the most delicious bread. Everyone raves about it, and you will be hooked once you taste it! I like to pop in once every few months and get one of their delicious sandwiches. I recommend calling in advance as the place is packed around lunchtime (everyone knows how good they are!). My favorite is the egg salad sandwich on a Joseph roll. If you order in advance, it's fast with little waiting although it's kind of fun to wait and browse through the store at the awesome baked goodies and products imported from Italy. It's at the west end of the downtown so it might be a little tricky to find parking during the summer but it's worth a little bit of a walk to visit. Great Gloucester experience, and a must do!

“Can you say bread?”
Reviewed 21 July 2012

Anytime I'm in downtown Gloucester, I stop by Sclafani's to pick up a loaf of Italian bread. It's always warm and smells so good I have to put it in the back seat of the car so it makes it home!

“Best Italian bread”
Reviewed 8 March 2012

Sclafani ("Scully's") bread & Virgilio's bread have a decades-old, friendly competition going on, home to home as well as business to business.
Sclafani wins. There are even rumors that Virgilio's actually sugars its bread. Try them both and see what you think!
Sclafani bread has a perfect crust. It's ideal for toasting, for sandwiches, or to accompany a meal. Especially an Italian or Portuguese meal with sauce -- this bread both absorbs and stands up to a hearty sauce. In addition, it makes fantastic, thick slabs of French toast.
Sclafani also serves take-out foods (i.e., sandwiches) and, as a bakery, has cookies, pastries, etc. But I go when I need bread.
If you find yourself in Gloucester, you must pick up a loaf or two. When my family comes to town, they request it -- it's that kind of good! If it's outside bakery hours, Shaw's in Gloucester carries it; last time I checked, Stop & Shop did not, and Market Basket stocked only a very small number of loaves a day, which tended to be gone by mid-afternoon.
