“Good motel, comfortable stay”
Reviewed 7 November 2013

Stayed here for 1 night, booked online which was convenient and easy. Motel is a little way out of Gloucester (but only a 10 min drive) but there are shops just down the road in walking distance. Stayed here based on price and previous reviews. Good, warm spacious room with free wi-fi. Does have a pool but was closed as it was out of season. Bed was good and got a good nights rest and the room was quiet. Basic breakfast provided (cereal, muffins, orange juice/coffee/tea) which was actually not bad as you could take it back to your room. Motel was clean and reception welcoming.

We recently stayed in Gloucester for a few days and stayed at the Sea Lion Motel. The room was big and clean, and they provide the basics. They do serve coffee and some basic breakfast items but we didn't have any. We were comfortable and had a pleasant stay and would go back.

While this "Inn" looks pretty nice on the outside, we were disappointed in the room. It smelled of mildew, the mattress was very soft, the bathroom door didn't close entirely, and the toilet flushed explosively so it could wake the dead in the middle of the night. It also had the most complicated TV set-up so we spent nearly 1 hour figuring out how to watch it.

But worst was the peephole. There was none in the door to the outside. But there was one in the door connecting our room to the neighboring room. We couldn't tell which way it looked. Consequently, we stuffed it with toilet paper so no one could look in. That peephole was quite spooky.

The bathroom was stocked only with soap and shampoo. No lotion, no creme rinse.

We stayed at the Sea Lion Inn the last week of their season and there really didn't seem to be much of price break, especially given the low quality of the room.

The staff in the office were very, very friendly. Compliments to them. But still, given the room, I would not stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before you commit.

It is not our practice to either solicit or respond to reviews but we felt that the review titled “watch the peephole” required a response. First, there is no peephole on the outside door. Our neighborhood is very safe and there is a full window adjacent to every door in case you would like to see who is knocking. With respect to the “spooky” peephole, the facts are these. We have one set of rooms that can be converted to a double room. The connection is a jamb of two doors each with factory installed one way peepholes – from the inside out. Anyone looking out the inside peephole only sees a second door. It is unfortunate that this guest did not raise their concerns with our staff as that would have resolved the issue. As for the toilets, every room is equipped with a modern low flow adapter. With regard to the other complaints, the Sea Lion rests its reputation on the many favorable reviews we have received this year.

The Sea Lion motel has big rooms, sober but very clean and adequate. The beds are very good. Although officially they don't serve breakfast we had fresh coffee, fruit, yoghurt, fresh (non fabric) muffins and donuts, juice, milk and cereal!
Service was great as well, so all together we had a very good stay here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor of the rear building and you'll have ocean view!

A large group of family members stayed here for a family wedding in Gloucester. There were rooms to meet every need: some just basic, some efficiency rooms, one building with deluxe suites. We were all accommodated to suit our individual circumstances. The rooms were kept to a high standard of cleanliness. Our efficiency was in building B. The kitchen was nicely equipped with a full-size refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster, coffee maker. Just bring your coffee & filters and a few groceries and you are set. The office also has coffee, donuts and muffins available in the morning. The office staff and housekeeping staff are helpful and attentive. Irons and mini ironing boards are available in the office as well. Our unit also had the handicap-accessible bathroom. The shower has no ledge to step over and there is a nice sturdy built-in shower bench. The only complaint I had (if you can even call it that) was that our pillows were hard and uncomfortable. So if you are fussy about your pillows, bring your own. The arrangement of the property makes it easy for family groups to get together, with picnic tables and nice grill available right in the courtyard near the pool. We would definitely stay there again.

We stayed here for one night in a king room. The room was large as was the bathroom. Décor was minimal. There were no pictures on the walls, no window treatments and the furnishings were somewhat rustic. The room and bathroom were clean. Check-in was pleasant and the person checking us in offered suggestions for dining options. There was a pool area adjacent to the main building we stayed in, however we did not use it. On the plus side, the room was quiet, comfortable and we slept well. The hotel was conveniently located within very close proximity to a shopping center with a supermarket and pharmacy. Cons were that the room was not aesthetically pleasing. In addition I noticed some mold on some of the foam in the air conditioner and I'm allergy sensitive to mold so I had to take allergy meds. There was a continental breakfast offered at 8 a.m. since we has to check out prior to 8 we were not able to benefit from this. All things considered, I felt like we overpaid for our stay at this motel.

Making a reservation at a place you've never been is always a risk...this worked out well. The Sea Lion is basic but has everything you need and it is clean. Extras included a continental breakfast and coffee, nice pool, and friendly/helpful staff. A great location just around the corner from Good Harbor Beach - can't beat that!
