“Wonderful View”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We stayed in "The Manchester" room at The Harborview Inn last weekend for one night. The facility is located directly across the street from the Fisherman's Memorial on the harbor and has magnificent views from the harbor side rooms and the front porch. We were greeted warmly by proprietor John and were shown to our room immediately after check in. There is parking for guests in the rear of the building which is essential as the road is very busy and parking on the street is limited.
Our room was dated, with old fashioned wall paper; even on the ceiling, very worn carpeting and a bathroom unfit for even an average sized person. Any man who stands to use the toilet must duck to avoid running into the sloped roof line, a real hazard especially at night. I am a guest who always checks the bedding before I settle into a room. The comforter cover had an unidentifiable stain that I found disgusting but as soon as I brought my concern to the proprietor, it was removed and a fresh quilt delivered to the room.
Since the room has a view it also shares the incessant road noise. When the draw bridge, a short way up the road is open to allow boats through, the traffic in front of the inn stops completely. The engine, radio and vibrating bass sounds are unavoidable. even with the windows closed it was very loud.
In the morning we were awakened to the roar of garbage trucks and other large vehicles at 5:30am. Not ideal for vacation.
The breakfast consist of store bought pastries and coffee.
The inn is convenient to walking along the harbor and the porch provides a very pleasant place to rest, enjoy a glass of wine( bring your own), observe the boats and people watch. A caution to all walkers: many dogs accompany their people - - beware - - many do not clean up after their pets..
John was a gracious host who offered lots of local information and recommendations for dinner.
The inn is in desperate need of updating. The TV is a portable from the 1980s and about 8 inches wide diagonally, the bathroom, though clean is very small, the facility is right on a very busy road with all the attending disruptions. I would not recommend this place if you are looking for peace and quiet or a modern room. A B&B has it's charm but this one has lost it's luster.

Room Tip: If you want a view you will have road noise.

This was our second stay with John, and we couldn't have been happier or more comfortable. The first-floor Golub Room (it's really a suite) is lovely and the bed feels like a cloud. It was also perfect for us, as my wife can't climb stairs very well. We love hearing John talk about the town, the history of the house and neighborhood, and all the attractions of the area, You can sit on the front porch or inside the parlor and watch the lobstermen and all the boats in the harbor. Great Inn, convenient location, and happy to call John a friend. Coming back!

Room Tip: The Golub suite on the first floor has a private rear entrance and you can use the Inn's parlor...

The Harborview Inn is the perfect place to stay while visiting Gloucester! The location is great! It is just across the street from the famous Fisherman's Memorial, and it is within close walking distance of all the shops on Main St, and the restaurants along the waterfront. And the views! The views of the water are superb! My boyfriend and I stayed in the Essex Room on the top floor, and from there the view was wonderful! Aside from the view, our room was very nice and had the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in. John, the innkeeper, was so friendly and personable, that he quickly made us feel like old friends or family. Overall, the Harborview Inn is a lovely and relaxing place to stay while visiting the Cape Ann area. Highly recommended!

I have stayed at the Harborview many times while on business in Gloucester. John, the owner, is quite friendly and accommodating. The rooms are clean and quaint. The style is very much old b&b with lots of prints. The rooms could use a little updating, -- new T.V's, a few more outlets, etc -- but then again most B&B guests are there for the quaintness not luxury. The b&b is located across the street from the Gloucester fisherman statue, and is only a few minute walk from the downtown shops and restaurants of Gloucester. Highly recommend this place for value and comfort.

Room Tip: The rooms in the front of the hotel are the only ones that offer a view of the water.

We stayed on night at the Harborview Inn. The location is amazing with the boardwalk and waterfront right on the doorstep. The room was nice and breakfast was continental. The host John is a nice guy and helpful.

We only stayed one night but the inn was clean, the view from the front porch was amazing and beautiful, one of the most beautiful well tended flower gardens anywhere around here. The innkeepers were very friendly, the room was very comfortable. My only wish was the breakfast was a little better, I'm used to a nice cooked breakfast at most B&B's and they had the usual garden variety of dry cereal and some pastries. Overall, I'd stay here again I would just plan to have breakfast out in one of the local well known restaurants. Location was superb for walking to town and around the harbor !!! On a quirky note, the home was built in 1810 by the Gorton family of the Gorton Fisherman fame !!!

Arriving in Gloucester on a Wednesday evening with no reservations, we came upon this B&B along the harbor. Fortunately we were able to stay here for one night. Even though there was a lot of traffic noise heard in the room, the traffic subsided by 10 p.m. and we had a very quiet, restful night's sleep. The photo of the rose colored room was our room and we enjoyed the views of the harbor. A good location because we had a short walk to Main Street for restaurants and didn't have to use the car. Breakfast was continental and for the price of the room, I would have enjoyed a bit more variety, perhaps some yogurt and fruit salad. Bananas were available as was two kinds of cereal, some coffee cakes, hard boiled eggs, bagels and English muffins. (I suppose I just missed having my daily yogurt/fruit fix :) The innkeepers were friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed chatting with other guests.
