“Excellent Relaxing Evening. Highly recommended!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014

We pulled up to the Thornewood Inn. It looked quite quaint from the outside. As soon as we walked in to see if there was a room available, we knew we had to stay there & got lucky that someone had just cancelled. Live jazz music was playing in the restaurant. The food smelled delicious & was! We had a relaxing night. The room we got had a king bed, views of the gardens and a newly renovated bathroom with a jacuzzi.

My adult daughter and I just stayed at Thornewood for two nights. The inn is in a beautiful location and is full of country-inn charm. The main floor - public rooms and dining rooms - has a stunning layout, one lovely room and view leading to another, and is furnished with appealing antiques. The spacious grounds (and pool) are beautifully landscaped and maintained. The guest rooms are also cozy and comfortable. The huge wrap around porch, with its white wicker furniture and hanging fuschias, is most inviting.

Most of all, our innkeeper, Terry, was welcoming and solicitous. She fixed me a little "snack" dinner since the dining room was closed, she made individual breakfasts for my daughter and me, and was very attentive to our needs and comfort.

I'd definitely recommend the Thornewood Inn!!

The owners of Thornewood Inn are exceptionally welcoming, warm and inviting. We had some wonderful conversations with them and they made excellent recommendations for what we needed to do in the area. Both Terry and David are incredibly lovely, helpful intelligent people.
Terry is an amazing cook.....everything we ate was delicious and we all ordered different food. And And her desserts were heavenly.
There is a staircase to maneuver which was no trouble for me or our daughter but a bit difficult for my husband who has trouble walking; a small price to pay, however for the ambience of the Inn. Each room is decorated differently....all in keeping with the antique look of the rest of the Inn....and beautifully done.
Although just off the road that runs through Great Barrington, it was deliciously quiet at night. Early in the morning we could hear the birds chirping.
We would visit again just to spend time with them and at the Inn.
It's a great location for just about anywhere in the area.
The dining room faces the valley and it was wonderful to watch the sunset as we were having our before dinner.

Room Tip: Both the Queen size bed rooms I saw (we stayed in one of them) were lovely. There was a twin bedded...

Spent the weekend with friends at the Thornwood Inn and had a great stay. The Inn is warm and welcoming and the innkeepers David and Terry are lovely. Also had a nice dinner one night at the Inn. It was quiet here in April, yet they still had live music in the dining room which was very nice. The rooms are comfortable, although the lighting is poor for reading. All in all a nice place and I would definitely recommend a stay here when visiting Great Barrington.

Skied Butternut all day Saturday (12/28/13) and checked in at the Thornewood Inn that night. My girlfriend and I were warmly greeted by Terry and David, who spent a few minutes going over all the inn's amenities, suggesting and recommending activities around the area, answering our questions, and inviting us to dinner at the restaurant located at the inn later that evening.

Dinner was undeniably gourmet and the chef is a culinary genius; the ingredients were so fresh and the meal was so tasty! Dinner options included grass-fed beef, organic options, in-season vegetables from local farms, etc. My girlfriend ordered the meatloaf (best meatloaf I have ever had, bar none!) with a side of mashed potatoes, beets, broccoli, and carrots; I ordered the pork loin with similar sides. We shared the lemon-cheesecake. There was a live jazz band playing throughout the evening, and we had very attentive service over the candlelit dinner. Dinner was a great experience..

The room was very clean, neat and cozy. One of the nicest inn's in the area, and I have experienced the Red Lion Inn as well as a point of reference. Water pressure in the rooms could have been better. Bed was very comfortable. The bathroom had a toilet and shower; the sink was located in the actual room next to the bathroom; this did not bother us. We had a great night's sleep.

Next morning before heading out to the slopes, we had a very gourmet breakfast at the inn. The food here is very very good. Breakfast was pouched eggs on top of crisp english muffins topped with bacon, with a decorative side of fresh fruit. The coffee was strong and rich as well. Couldn't be happier with the breakfast they had prepared for us.

That evening, we visited the Gypsy Joynt for dinner which was recommended by the hostess at the Thornewood Inn. On a side note, the Gypsy Joynt is an eclectic pub/restaurant where you can order gourmet pizzas and burgers in a very 'interesting' setting while choosing from a variety of beers on tap and listening to live music. It was a great recommendation and we had a very fun time.

Next morning, we had packed up and brought our belongings to the car before having one last breakfast and checking out. Breakfast was again delicious, this time we had the opportunity to sample the chef's homemade pancakes with pure maple syrups and side of blueberries and banana; let's just say you can't get pancakes to taste this good with batter bought from a store. Now that I think back, my girlfriend and I thought the portions were perfect every meal we had at the inn, and we did not leave any food behind it was so good!

Overall, this is one of the best bed and breakfasts we had ever been to and recommend it to all our family and friends. The service and food are top notch. It's very clean. The location is great. Will definitely be visiting again next time we are in town for the Clarke Museum, Norman Rockwell exhibit, show at Tanglewoods, or skiing in the Berkshires.

Room Tip: We stayed at the room called "Lady Morgan"; this is the first room on the right after walk...

Cons:
1) Second floor rooms are a walk-up. This is a traditional New England B&B, so you have to schlep your bags upstairs. Elevators don't exist (and my wife packs for a trip to an African Safari).
2) VERY quiet. Outside of comfy conversations in front of the fire downstairs, the only sound was that of the wind... Maybe it's better that way but as New Yorkers, we get used to a random ambulance siren and what not.
Pros:
1) Talk about personable! The owner greeted us when we got there and immediately made us feel at home. We didn't feel like visitors - we felt like long-lost family.
2) A working fireplace in our room. Extra romance points with the wifey (and not so shabby for me either)!
3) Breakfast (after all -it IS a bed & breakfast, right?) that tasted like a real home-cooked meal straight out of mom's kitchen. Hearty and tasty.
4) while we can't guarantee that you will see the same thing- the place attracts seasoned travelers. Conversations in front of the downstairs fireplace were invigorating and fun for once!
5) Beautiful grounds, clean rooms, easy access to just about everything in the Berkshires. Made my driving chores (wifey doesn't drive) a LOT easier.

Not sure what the complaining in the other reviews were about but in spite of being a B&B skeptic (I prefer hotels -this was the wife's choice), I am darned glad that I actually listened to her. I'm also glad that neither of us gave one bit of credibility to the negative reviews. I actually agreed with my wife to return again in the summer for a bit of Tanglewood! Maybe she'll convert me to country inns after all... Thank you Laurie (a second generation owner) - the pleasure was indeed all ours.

Room Tip: Request a fireplace room during colder months. Well worth it!

Just got back from a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner at this quaint inn in the Berkshires. Food was very tasty and plentiful. The relaxed atmosphere made the entire experience worth the trip. We really enjoyed the friendly, attentive and helpful staff who went out of there way to ensure that the members of our party with dietary restrictions were accommodated. This hidden gem in the Berkshires turned out to be a great find for a leasurely Thanksgiving Dinner complete with piano player. Would definitely go back.
