The Guthrie Center & Foundation

Attraction details
Owner description: The epicenter of Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant." The events that took place on Thanksgiving 1965 became a song, the song became a record, the record a movie. The movie was filmed in 1968 where the actual events took place on location at The Old Trinity Church, which became The Guthrie Center founded by Arlo Guthrie, and named for his parents, Woody & Marjorie Guthrie in 1991. The Center continues the Guthrie Family philosophy of a place for interfaith worship, cultural exchange especially with music and art, and of course a place to eat (during seasonal performances). 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" and the old church will celebrate in style with services and performances that will put a smile on your face and nourish your heart.

“First visit”

Saw Arlo in concert earlier this year and checked out the Guthrie Center online so we wanted to stop by while we were in the area. Now I'm really bummed that we missed the hootenanny after reading a previous post. Nice people, good vibe, and worthy mission. A must stop to educate future generations.

“Always a treat and better each time.”

Perfect dose of the 60's updated and refreshed with a tidy selection of food and beverages for dinner. We have been enjoying this venue for years, watching it become more polished...but not too much.

“Go to a Hootenanny!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2013

Yep! That is what it is called and they happen on Thursday nights. Lots of fun if you enjoy music of the 60s and 70s. We brought two families and sang for hours. At the end of every hootenanny, the entire group joins in and sings This Land is Your Land, This land is My Land! Fun! I have never been to a concert here - but the stage is beautiful!

“JAM SESSION EXTRAODINAIRE”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2013

For a $5.00 donation you can get yourself a great cup of coffee or tea, the cream is behind you in the fridge, and then listen to whomever feels like showing up play whatever instrument at whatever level they can play. There is a nice vibe in this place. They serve lunch on Wednesday (I think) and the smiles and friendliness seems to be everpresent. Thanks guys!
