Bizen has some of the best flavors offered for cuisine in the Berkshires. Follow these guidelines for a delicious meal...Their ume scallion salad dressing should not be missed. The rolls are also tasty. I am not a fan of the oysters. I am a fan of the hijiki, agé tofu, any grilled items and lunch specials. Any maki roll whether simple such as the shiitake vegetarian maki or complex like the yo-yo mama or Buddha roll will make your taste buds happy. It is not a chain restaurant so things like shumai and spring rolls will not taste like chain food. There are organic and macro options. It's very natural. The salmon sushi/sashimi is like butter! I hope this helps you decide what to order!

First off, our server was awesome! She took plenty of time to help show us the various menus and find just the right sake. Have to give kudos to the host as well who found us a good table and made sure we were comfortable. But the food was somewhat of a letdown. We opted for some appetizers and sushi and can't say that anything was anything but less than average. Thankfully the prices for sushi we're not exorbitant. But again, we won't be going back anytime soon.

We opted to sit at low tables, where you take off your shoes.
The food is always fresh, and delicious. The plates are easily shared, and you always end up ordering too much.
The restaurant is busy and noisy, but they have many different seating areas.
they offer a full bar, and plum wines and sake. For some reason the plum wine is never cold enough.
Take your time and read the whole menu so you don't miss anything..

When this place first opened, over ten years ago, the deal was you paid above average prices for the area and got very good sushi and put up with haphazard service. Now that Great Barrington is more of a dining mecca, the service seems to have improved (to the point where I'd label it "competent") but the food is decidedly mediocre, despite (or perhaps because of) the ever expanding variety on the menu. A sushi joint in the heart of Great Barrington is bound to get good foot traffic on weekends; that's why this place continues to be popular. There is no other explanation.

Postscript for serious Japanese food aficionados: much of what they do at Bizen is just plain wrong. Two examples from my dinner there tonight: hiyya yako tofu served with the wrong kind of tofu; "omakase" sushi meaning a huge amount of same-old same-old -- far too much food for one person -- instead of any actual creativity from the sushi chefs.

Great location and nice to walk around before or after dinner. The service was great and very fast. Most restaurants seem to take so long to prepare fresh sushi but this was very quick.
The menu was so interesting with exciting and creative rolls I have never seen before.
We were a large party and each ordered very different items. Everything was great.
