“Wedding Caterer”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Our daughter was married this past spring in Lenox, MA. The venue we chose did not provide food service, and Michael Ballon, owner and chef of Castle Street Café, came highly recommended as a caterer by the innkeeper. We had a wonderful dinner at Castle Street Café to get a feel for the menu, after which we began discussions about catering for the wedding. After the initial food tasting, we knew that we had made the correct choice in Michael Ballon. Since all of the preparations for the tasting were so good, we found it difficult to eliminate any and our guests ended up having a choice of four entrees, filet mignon with red wine sauce, filet of salmon with saffron sauce, breast of chicken stuffed with Berkshire Blue, and a Spring vegetable plate. The appetizers, scallop and bacon skewers, Swedish meatballs, asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, and vegetable stuffed mushrooms were equally outstanding as well.

The reception went off without a hitch. Michael and his staff were very professional and somehow managed to flawlessly maneuver from the kitchen and through the dance floor to the tables. The meals were absolutely delicious and we received many compliments. We would not hesitate to use or recommend Michael for future catering business.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

From the outside, the restaurant seems promising (the decor and menu brought us in). The food was a BIG disappointment; our food was lukewarm and two dishes (the short ribs and salmon) were both overcooked. Especially for the price, this was a big disappointment.

“Good food at Great Barrington Cafe/Restaurant”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

We were in Great Barrington for a concert at the Mahaiwe Theater. With just about an hour till showtime we decided to eat at the Castle Street Cafe which is next door to the theater. It was a good choice. Since we were in a rush we chose a chicken dish and a pasta dish rather than some of the more creative options. The food was very good and we got to the show on time. I did note that there was a jazz band setting up to perform by the bar. Next time in town we will return and possibly take in the entertainment at this cafe/restaurant.
