Reviewed 28 July 2002

I am writing to warn travelers to stay away from the Simmons Homestead Inn in Hyannis Port, MA. An unpleasant experience with Bill Putnam, the owner, went a long way toward ruining a recent weekend trip to Hyannis and I would strongly urge that you avoid the inn if you happen to visit Cape Cod.

On the weekend of July 20-21, 2002, my wife and I took at trip to Cape Cod and we stayed at the Simmons Homestead Inn. After we checked in, we noticed that our sheets did not smell fresh. They had a sour odor as if they had been humid for too long. We looked for someone to change them, but no one was around and so we left a message on the answering machine asking Mr. Putnam to change the sheets. The message was straightforward—we simply informed him that the sheets smelled sour, as if they had been wet too long, and asked him to send someone up to change them. However, for some reason Mr. Putnam apparently interpreted our message as an attack on the integrity of his Inn and as an attempt to insinuate the sheets had not been changed since the previous guests' stay. When we returned that evening, a note from Mr. Putman was on our bed. In the note, Mr. Putnam ranted about how he was insulted by us and concluded by stating that if we 'have a problem with scents take it up with whatever company makes Tide. No one has ever complained before so Tide may turn a deaf ear too'.

We were not only insulted, but even unnerved that he could react so strongly to a simple request to change sheets with an unpleasant odor. I am not sure how or why he interpreted our message as a suggestion that he neglected to change the sheets, but regardless of what he thought we insinuated his note on our bed was unjustified and extremely discourteous. I would not expect this kind of experience staying in a cheap roadside motel, let alone when I am paying over $200 a night to stay in an inn that advertises itself as 'the nicest and friendliest country inn on Cape Cod, or maybe anywhere'. Ironically, this slogan is atop the letterhead on which Mr. Putnam wrote his hateful note.

Stay away from the Simmons Homestead Inn.
