My husband and I recently returned from 2 nights at this beautiful inn and we highly recommend it: it's beautiful and meticulously maintained with delicious breakfasts, a delightful, romantic fireplace and comfortable rooms. Bob and his staff are friendly without being intrusive and exceeded expectations in helpfulness. Bob is very knowledgeable on the history of the Inn and the Crane estate and its importance in the surrounding area, and went out of his way to answer our many questions, even including a tour. It wasn't beach weather, but I look forward to returning when we can enjoy the gorgeous beach.

Big difference from the web sight total letdown. Water stains on celling old just rundown. Went down for breakfast and was greeted by some young girl who not only looked like she had come from the gym but also smelled like it . My husband asked for sugar for our coffee she came back and threw some pink packets of fake sweetener and walked off. This was one trip i could not wait to get back home too. This place was a real let down please don't bother .

My teenage son and I were there from 9/3-9/5 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed it! When we pulled into the inn, a staff member came out to greet us, helped us get settled and answered all of our questions. Within minutes, we headed to the glorious Crane Beach with beach towels, tote, beach chairs and a complimentary beach pass ($15.00 value) supplied by the inn. That evening, the same staff member guided us toward a tasty and reasonably priced dinner in Essex at "The Farm Bar and Grille". (If you go there, get the mussels appetizer and the BBQ platter.)

9/4: Breakfast was scrumptious: peach pancakes with blueberry syrup and chicken sausage. We also had yogurt and homemade granola and pastries. It was a cool and rainy day, and another staff member, Camilla, gave us some interesting ideas for restaurants to eat lunch at and places to while away the afternoon. We ended up eating lunch at Periwinkles' in Essex. We were right on the waterfront, which was lovely, and had the best clam chowder we've ever sampled. Just be aware that the prices are on the expensive side ($6.00 for a cup of chowder). I wasn't paying attention to this, and experienced a bit of sticker shock when the bill arrived. We ended up in Newburyport that afternoon and had fun doing some fall shopping at these two stores: "The Best of British" and "French Lessons." That evening, we dined at Shea's Riverside Restaurant and Bar, also in Essex. Again, the location was right on the water and was beautiful. We loved the steamers as an appetizer and for the entree, shared the stuffed lobster. If I went back, I'd recommend having the boiled lobster instead. The stuffed lobster had way too many bread crumbs, and not enough seafood and lobster meat. We finished the evening with yummy treats from Down River Ice Cream, located on the way back to the inn.

9/5: On our final morning, we enjoyed a delicious boursin cheese and asparagus omelette, home fries and whole grain toast. Again, we were offered yogurt, homemade granola and homemade blueberry muffins as well. Check out of our room (Choate) was at 11:00 a.m., but we were allowed to hang around afterward since we didn't need to be at our next destination until late in the day. In fact, they offered us chairs, towels, tote and a beach pass once again so that we could enjoy a final few hours at Crane Beach, and only asked that we dropped everything off on our way out.

Overall, the inn was tastefully decorated, elegant, quiet and relaxing. The staff, including the innkeeper, Bob, were friendly, helpful and welcoming. I would totally recommend the Inn at Castle Hill to anyone who loves the ocean as much as I do and wants to be as close to it as possible when on vacation, while also being surrounded by beauty and comfort. It is suitable for couples, families, friends and solo. When you're there, take a tour of the Crane Estate and enjoy strolling on their exquisite grounds. I look forward to returning there soon.

In response to the negative reviews of Choate--the room was cool, but it was hot and humid outside, and we welcomed the air conditioning and weren't too cold at all. The shower functioned well, and the bathroom was beautiful and spacious to boot. I would stay in that same room again with no hesitation.

The Inn is a gracious, tasteful, and beautiful place to spend a few days. However, management has chosen to take a black eye on some of its problems rather that address them. The room designated as "Choate" should not be offered to guests until these issues are resolved. Others have complained about faulty central air conditioning at this Inn and in particular, in this room. My husband and I noticed the problem on arrival are were told there was a problem. Little did we know the extent of it. He spent the night in the lobby to avoid being locked in a meat locker and I wrapped up in sweaters and polartech fleece and the thin blanket that was provided. That next night, we received blockers for the vents in the system which helped somewhat but not enough to be comfortable.
The beautiful bathroom also had a faulty almost unusable shower. The shower head was almost completely blocked and water went in all directions until a staff member came up and said the ceiling was leaking. Their solution: make sure the curtain is tucked in.
This is not an inexpensive Inn even though a full breakfast is provided and a beach pass worth $25 is too. There are no phones, tv, or radio. If you bring your own lap top there is WiFi. That is ok if you seek quiet and we were but the main unit providing the air conditioning was just outside the window and very audible at all times.
The surrounding towns of Cape Ann such as Essex, Gloucester, and Ipswitch and the use of Crane Beach and the splendid grounds of the estate are a great feature and so is the wonderful seafood all around the region but eventually you want a good night's sleep and decor will take you only so far.

A beautiful setting if you want peace and quiet. The front porch and it's view are fabulous. The rooms are sparsely furnished but adequate. Staff is very accomondating.

Make sure you bring a book since there are no tv's and no other forms of entertainment. This is a place to stay if you want total relaxation. Spend a day at the beach and then settle in on the front porch to view the sunset with a glass of wine. Note that you have to buy the wine from the hotel and cannot supply your own.

This was my second visit to the Inn at Castle Hill, a simply lovely property belonging to the Trustees of Reservations in Ipswich, MA. Part of the grand Crane estate (think of the Crane plumbing dynasty, not Crane paper), the Inn is a beautiful, well-appointed guest house on a much-appreciated human scale. The inn keeper, Bob, couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. The rooms are elegantly decorated and oh-so-comfortable. The inn provides a perfect retreat or getaway for family, couples, or friends. Crane Beach is just down the road. The town of Ipswich provides many good restaurants, diversions, and points of interest, including more first-periods homes than any other part of New England. Of particular interest to those interested in architectural or material history is the Alexander Knight House, a recreation first-period house in the center of town, on the grounds of the Whipple House (see http://www.ipswichknighthouse.org/ and http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alexander-Knight-House-Ipswich-MA/332019709277 for more information.) The Inn's accommodations are on the pricey side (Trustees' members receive a 10% discount on a two-night stay), but well worth the investment for a special occasion or much-needed civilized escape.

Room Tip: The web site provides good descriptions of the rooms. I don't think there's a bad room at th...

We recently spent three nights here and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! The property is beautiful with sweeping green lawns, an ocean view and lovely gardens. The front porch is large and comfortable - a great place to realx, read or just enjoy the view. Each room has unique features. We stayed in "Choate" which was nicely apointed with a good sized bathroom and ample bedroom area. The Inn has comfortable common areas and the staff was pleasant and helpful. It is a great location for touring the area while offering a realxing retreat from summer crowds. The breakfasts were served in a lovely dining room and the food was always very good! If you have time -- try dinner at the 1640 Hart House in town -- the food was really good and affordable and the atmosphere was perfect!
