The inn is a fabulous and special escape on the North Shore. It's peaceful, elegant and even smells great. The service is what you want it to be, helpful, competent, but never imposing. Tastefully decorated rooms each with their own character and charm. Waking up to breakfast at the inn and storing homemade cookies in the pantry makes you feel like your'e leading a decadent lifestyle. Life is conducted at a slower, more enjoyable pace 10 months of the year. We love each of the seasons in Ipswich, all of which draw us outside because of its natural beauty although sitting by the fire in colder months at the inn causes you to curl up with a good book! The views are spectacular from some of the rooms and sitting on the grand porch with someone bringing you a glass of wine makes you want to move in permanently. Less than a mile to one of the world's most beautiful beaches. Wonderful restaurants and other beach towns with great book stores and gourmet markets nearby. Lots of outside activities year round (i.e. orchards, produce farms, horseback riding, kayaking, boating, special events organized by the Trustees of Reservations, etc.). The castle where lunch is served is spectacular with rolling lawns and views of the ocean. Have stayed at a number of inns nearby and nothing compares. Have stayed at "Leading Hotels of the World" and "Relais and Chateaux" accommodations within the US and internationally and we continually return to the Inn at Castle Hill. Only wish is that not too many people find this place!

Room Tip: Great descriptions on website and by staff if you call.

The Inn at Castle Hill is in a truly magical location close to Crane's Beach and overlooking the salt marshes. Our room was elegant, spotless and very, very quiet -- it made for a very good night's sleep. That, and the wonderful linens!

Bad experience overall - made reservation one year in advance and prepaid - call three times prior to arrival to make sure everything was okay and prepayment received. Always got a yes. Upon arrival asked for credit card and I said it was prepayed and they said yes it was for incidentals - after I left they charged my card over $300 and said I had only payed half. They would not even respond to my emails. Claim to have handicap access - it was awkward and out of the way. Our room was freezing and had holes in the floor. Rarely any one at desk. Bugs everywhere. My advice is stay away.

I’m truly sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay, and clearly there was miscommunication about our rates and policies. In order to ensure our guests are aware of our rates and billing policies, we do send out an email confirmation and have all our guests sign a registration at check-in that clearly states the room rate and policies. We have a staff person available at the desk from 7:30AM to 10PM, with emergency numbers available to access our staff members who live on the property after hours. With regard to the air conditioning, it's true that it comes from vent holes in the rooms located on the first floor – one of the quirks of retrofitting an antique home for the comfort of our guests. We are sorry your stay coincided with the midges that can, on occasion, be a part of seasonal life of the marsh.

Regards,
Camilla Eagan

Ipswich, a suburb of Boston, is the home of Crane Beach, a remarkable, long, wide, sandy beach that is a popular swimming spot in warmer months and a fabulous place to walk in cooler ones. The Inn at Castle Hill is a pleasant old inn less than a mile from the Beach entrance, with glorious salt marshes around most of the property. It is on the side of a hill where, higher up, you can also find the Great House, formerly the home of members of the Crane family, plumbing heirs from Chicago, lived in enviable style. Now owned by the Trustees of the Reservations, a nonprofit that owns a number of now-public lands and estates in the area, the Inn provides pleasant private rooms and baths and excellent breakfasts. In cooler months there is a fire going in the living room most of the time, coffee and cookies are on tap, and alcoholic drinks are available at an extra charge. Views are lovely, and with luck you may see, as we did, a buck with an impressive rack grazing on the lawn right outside the window. Miles and miles of walking trails are found nearby. Particularly noticeable is the impressive cleanliness of the rooms and the public areas - an excellent housekeeping team does a fine job. Staff are warm, welcoming, and very helpful. Great place to stay and recharge or use as a base for visiting the area.

Room Tip: If an ocean view is important, be sure to ask when making a reservation - some rooms have no ocean v...

What a great place to stay and explore the area. We were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived by Camille, the Asst. Innkeeper. We stayed in the Winthrop Room on the second floor in the corner. It's well decorated, light and has a gorgeous view of the marsh and ocean. We took many beautiful walks around the huge property. The breakfast was superb. We cannot wait to return for a longer stay next time. You won't be sorry with any aspect of staying here.

My wife surprised me with a weekend reservation for our wedding anniversary this past July. We spent Friday and Saturday night at the Inn, eating breakfast at the Inn and taking dinner in Ipswich. We had an "estate view" out of the windows (not an ocean view) but since we spent most of our time out of our room, it didn't matter. Our room was clean & comfortable. The service was friendly and efficient. On Saturday, we walked up to the mansion and took the tour (well worth the time; a fascinating view into early 20th century life). We walked to Castle Hill Beach (free for guests at the Inn) and just plain relaxed by sitting on the huge porch with a view of the salt marshes. We walked all over the estate and checked-out the gardens. Along with Crane Beach next door, these are two of the best Massachusetts beaches short of Cape Cod; perhaps even the best beaches in New England. We met a couple who loves the Inn and surroundings so much that they come up from Boston for every season. If you like a country inn, quiet surroundings, beautiful vistas, good food, good service, and a relaxing atmosphere, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: If you are in your room for anything other than sleeping, you're doing it wrong.

My husband and I stayed at the Inn for a Friday and Saturday for my sons wedding in early June. You must stay for two nights minimum. It was quite expensive but the building is beautiful and the wall murals are stunning. The Winthrop Room was very comfortable, bedding was terrific, bathroom very roomy and the views lovely. Breakfast was delicious. The large porch offered chairs for relaxing. We also had use of the Tavern which offered a private getaway before the festivities. It was so quiet we hardly heard any other guests! A beautiful restoration of a lovely old building. The staff seems a little inexperienced, and at breakfast we were not offered anything but the daily special. We were unable to use the beach pass at the time.

Room Tip: We were very happy with our room choice. The two chairs were welcome for relaxing and reading. Pro...
