“Clean and comfortable, if a bit dated. Nice lake view”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

We stayed here after a Tanglewood concert. The Black Swan Inn is located between Tanglewood and the Lee exit on the Mass Pike, so the location is perfect. The rooms was nice and clean, and the beds comfortable. The sink for the bathroom was, oddly, out in the main room, and was a bit noisy when in use.The view out the slider was of the lake, and it was very nice. There was a small balcony off the room with a couple of chairs for enjoying the view. In the morning, we had the breakfast, included in the room price. It was essentially a continental breakfast, but we were heading out on the road, so it wasn't a big deal, but don't expect hot cooked-to-order food. The decor is a bit dated. The rate was on the high side, but the holiday weekend is a busy one, and the rate is not unexpected. The staff was friendly and helpful. Overall, a convenient, comfortable place to stay.

Room Tip: Get a room on the lake side.

Arrived with a group of 50 people and the check in was seamless. Paul Rodriguez, the manager, could not do enough for us. He was at our beck and call 24-7. Rob was just as helpful, and Kara at the front desk seemed like family. Our room was clean and overlooked the beautiful lake. It was a short walk to the sandy beach on the lake- it was idyllic. Plenty of chairs and perfectly manicured grounds. Definitely a home run in my book!!! Shopping and great restaurants are close. Stopped at the Norman Rockwell Museum on the way and it was spectacular. Visited FDR's home and library. History abounds.

Room Tip: Ask for Lakefront.

My friend and i have been coming to the Berkshires for the past 4 years. We stayed in a well know hotel in Stockbridge. This year we decided to try something new. We loved the Black Swan Inn. We had a lake view room, just beautiful. It was clean and very comfortable.
There is a nearby beach, with chairs/tables, bathroom facilities, life guard. In a beautiful location right on this beautiful lake.
We have already picked out our room for next year!!!

Room Tip: I am a photographer and our room looked out onto a dock with a boat. I wanted a better view of the l...

I have 3 words to describe our stay at the Black swan Inn : accommodations were drab, dirty and overpriced. A member of our party had an accident and it wasn’t until she was cleared medically for travel were we able to make our reservations, which was 5 weeks prior to our trip. At that point, the choices were limited and we decided to go with Black Swan because at least some of the reviews here on Tripadvisor were positive. We booked 2 rooms, one had a lake view and one on the second floor which turned out to have a view of the dumpster and road. The prices were the same for each room and were as follows: July 3rd ($399.99), July 4th ($469.99), July 5th ($379.99) and the total cost including taxes, for 3 nights came to $2792.44. The prices are outrageous considering that normally (e.g. in September), these rooms are priced at $149/night, giving us an average markup of 2.8 fold. It’s one thing if the rooms are worth the money but they are not. After a 10 hr drive we arrived in pouring rain, only to be kept waiting by the one receptionist in the office who couldn’t get herself off the phone. One of the rooms was on the second floor and there were no luggage carts, no porters, and no elevators. The stairway was steep and narrow and the carpet was filthy. The common areas were close to nonexistent. Breakfast was served in the lounge, which was decorated in dark brown hues. On multiple days, they had run out of OJ and we had to call the front desk. The rooms themselves were rather sparsely furnished: one desk chair with a small desk, no arm chair and only one bench that fits one suitcase only. The beds were soft and I had a stiff back from the 3 nights there. The AC was extremely loud, the only benefit was that it drowned out the noise coming through the thin doors and walls from the hallways and adjacent rooms. The bathtub on the second floor was a set up for an accident to happen: there were no hand rails or anything you could hold on to when you get in or out and the sides were taller than a standard bathtub. Housekeeping was sloppy: we found soap wrappers that previous occupants had left in the shower, cherry pits on the floor that we had placed in the wastebasket but apparently housekeeping managed to spill when they dumped the trash and not bothered to pick up. The room with the lake view was nicer since it didn’t look out onto the dumpster but was similarly sparsely furnished. The only positive thing I can say about the hotel is that it is centrally located, close to Tanglewood and restaurants.
Like many who went to the Berkshires, we had tickets to Tanglewood. Tanglewood and the BSO’s operating expenses are $70+ million per year and they are apparently barely breaking even. It is sad that local establishments such as the Black Swan Inn have decided to gouge concert goers at a time when they should be supporting the Arts: the proverbial killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Room Tip: Don't book second floor rooms without a lake view. Don't pay the outrageous prices they char...

Dear Alee21,

I am very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit with us here at the Black Swan Inn. The Berkshires have a very short demand season of only 2 months, July and August. For businesses to survive year round, they must take advantage of the popularity of the area during those months. July 3rd, 4th, and 5th happened to land on a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this year which created even more demand. Not only was it a holiday weekend, but James Taylor was at Tanglewood the 3rd and 4th, and the 5th was opening night for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I apologize for the rest of the issues that you faced throughout your stay and hope you would give us a chance to better serve you in the future. If you would like to call me directly at 413-243-2700, or email me at rmcnary@blackswaninnberkshires.com, we can discuss this further.

The location of the Inn is very good relative to Lenox, Lee, Stockbridge, Great Barrington and all the sights and sites of that area.
The room with lakefront view was very spacious and comfortable, having been recently renovated. The buffet breakfast room could be spiffed up a bit, and the continental breakfast offerings could be a bit more varied.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and the room up-keep was done very well.

Room Tip: Rooms with lakefront view have a nice balcony on which to relax and enjoy the view.

We only stated one night- it was not good . The first room we were given had a giant hair ball on the bathroom floor and bits of something (paper? Straw?) on the carpet. When I called down to ask to get a broom and vacuum Kara insisted we change rooms. Room #2 looked cleaner except for the mud/ cookie dough on the floors. So again we switched to room #3. This was cleaner - not clean but better (corners full of dust/dirt like the swept everything there and forgot to pick it up? Hair in the shower, etc).

The free breakfast was toast and cold cereal.

The parking lot and public areas are in need of an upgrade.

Honestly for $200 a night I expected better.

The bright spot was Kara at the front desk. She saw the rooms and was not pleased, calling her manager.

If we return I will look for hotels in Stockbridge or Pittsfield as Lee doesn't have much to offer .
