This was our first stay at a Bed and Breakfast, and I believe we are probably ruined for any other bed and breakfast experience. The Applegate Inn is like stepping back in time. We had a spectacular suite in the Main House. If you visit the website it is Room 8. The pictures on the website are amazing, but in person it is even more impressive. From the minute we walked through the door, Pam warmly welcomed us as she did through out our weekend stay. From the roaring fire in the main living room to the fresh baked cookies and fresh fruit, it was incredible. The breakfast that was served each morning was amazing! If you are a foodie, this is a dream. All fresh and made from scratch. I am not sure any other bed and breakfast will be able to meet our expectations! It was a relaxing, enjoyable weekend and we expect to be back there this fall!

Room Tip: There is not a bad room in this Inn.

My lifelong friends and I (6 of us) have been going to the Berkshires the same weekend for the last 5 years now. This was the first year we have stayed at the Applegate Inn. We were greeted by the lovely Pam, the innkeeper. She showed us around the main house and our cute Carriage House Suite. It slept 4 very comfortably and could've slept all 6 of us easily. The accommodations were very comfy , however we did have a leaky roof in the living area that definitely needs to be addressed. (Pam was nice enough to adjust our rate to compensate our discomfort.) Sodas, coffee, cookies could be found in the main house at any time. 5pm wine and cheese hour by the fire was such a nice touch. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the little touches that we would find throughout the weekend. Despite the leaky roof we had a great time and would recommend the Applegate Inn.

Applegate was all decorated for the holidays which, for us, was delightful. Pam greeted us warmly and showed us to our room which we loved! A charming gas fireplace, canopied bed, two comfortable wing back chairs for reading, and four lovely windows which allow the sun and light to pour in. The bathroom did lack counter space, but had an open shelf unit built into the wall that worked well. We had only one night to stay and wanted quiet and luxury. The comfy robes in the closet added to the luxury part! Applegate fit the bill perfectly! The home is old, adding to the charm, and creaky floors don't bother us a bit. A lovely champagne cocktail hour was offered with veggies and dip, shrimp, and chips, all served around a roaring fireplace downstairs. Gloria and Len, long time owners, were charming host and hostess and they and two other couples shared stories and plans for the evening. We felt very comfortable and welcomed in their home, and enjoyed this delightful prelude to dinner. We reserved this night to celebrate our wedding anniversary as we are not big party people, but appreciated being pampered, and we were! Due to the brevity of our stay we didn't get to use a charming sun room adjacent to the living room! The bank of windows overlooks the beautiful mountains in the distance, and affords views of the public golf course across the street. All sorts of games are set up for play, including Scrabble and checkers. The room invites you to settle in with a good book! Breakfast was an hour later than usual, a thoughtful offering after a night out, and it was special indeed! Freshly squeezed orange juice, plentiful delicious coffee, lovely china and linens, in a traditional dining room. The choices on the buffet adjacent to the room were scrumptious! A perfectly cooked quiche, poached salmon, endive stuffed with chicken salad, and a wonderful jelly roll cake. No one rushed you at all, ever. The entire stay was so relaxing and luxurious we're thinking of making this a tradition! Even checkout time was an hour later than usual! I know this was a special package, and I'd say well worth it. Since we haven't stayed during a regular time I can't comment on food offerings then. We are not at all put off by not being met by the owners, as they actually must have a life too! It was especially nice meeting them in the evening, however. We haven't been to many B&B's so don't know if this is usual or not, but we enjoyed having a little public room on the first floor complete with makings for individual coffee, tea or hot chocolate, a full frig with complimentary soda and water. It was nice to have glasses, pottery cups and real spoons to use and return. Also on the sideboard is a basket of fresh fruit as well as a jar kept stocked with fresh home made chocolate chip cookies! In each room there is a chocolate for you, as well as a decanter of sherry, a lovely touch. We enjoyed our stay here so much that we actually brought our dessert back to our room to sit and talk as the New Year happened upon us! Thank you, Applegate Inn, for a perfect anniversary evening! I'll try to add some photos later, if this site allows!

My wife and I spent two nights at the Applegate Inn in early November and we both agree that this B&B is not worth the money they are charging. When we first arrived we were met not by the Innkeepers but by an employee who showed us to our room on the second floor. No offer was made to help us lug our bags up the almost two story staircase so we were left to do that ourselves we are in our mid 60's and that isn't always easy). The house itself is quite old and with creaky floors covered with threadbare carpet on the landings. Our room was very large yet the bathroom was cramped with absolutely no counter space to store our toiletries, etc. The small bathroom (there was a spacious shower but it took 10 minutes to get hot water) was also quite cold despite the presence of a baseboard heater.

There was a printed message suggesting a daily "tip" for housekeeping but since all housekeeping ever did was make our bed we declined. There was a piece of facial tissue in plain sight on the floor during our stay that never was picked up or even moved suggesting that a vacuum cleaner was never used. The Inn did offer wine and cheese each evening for the guests which is pretty much standard for a B&B. Now we come to the breakfasts!

The two breakfasts we were served were the worst excuse for a breakfast we have ever had at a B&B. There was a small sideboard that had small boxes of cold cereal with a note that said yogurt was available. The "hot" buffet consisted one day of a quiche that seemed to be short on eggs, a wedge of cheese, slices of hardboiled egg and salmon cakes that smelled really fishy with a dill sauce. That was the second morning of our stay and the first breakfast was so memorable I can't even remember what the offerings were besides coffee, juice and some pieces of fruit. Neither day were any kind of breakfast meats offered (sausage, bacon, etc.) and we were amazed that a B&B charging almost $320 a night with tax would present a breakfast that was below that served at a Hampton Inn. Yes, there was fruit and orange juice and coffee served but come on! We had just stayed at a beautiful B&B in Vermont for almost one half the cost that served truly gourmet breakfasts including individual soufflés and the like. We also had everything served at our table without the need to go to a buffet like at a budget hotel.

My wife and I cannot understand the reviews of the Applegate Inn that are outstanding and it makes me wonder if these people actually stayed where we did! Oh yes, one more thing, we never met the Innkeepers during our stay and find that really unusual as at most B&B's the Innkeepers make it a point to greet their guests and make sure everything is going well. At the Applegate this is left to a paid employee which is not much different than staying at a chain hotel (which would be a lot less expensive!). We will not be staying at the Applegate Inn in the future and will make our friends aware of our experience.

We stayed in the Carriage house suite; kitchen, living room, dinning room, 2 bedrooms, private deck, bath, could sleep 6. Wallpaper could use update but suite was clean and comfortable. The floors were creaky and I felt bad for the people below. TVs on the small side but I didn't travel to the Berkshires to watch TV! The manager Pam was fantastic, personable, knowledgeable of local area and just nice to talk to. Breakfast was good. Every breakfast had some wonderful parts and some interesting parts, like one day there was 3 bean salad served, another marinated Artichoke hearts. The Salmon Cakes with dill sauce were great, Omelets great, no meat served with any breakfast.
Beautiful grounds and gardens, nice heated pool, and afternoon wine and snacks!
Overall very happy with the Applegate Inn!

Applegate Inn, set on a leafy street in The Berkshires has an old world charm. It's not modern, the furnishings are traditional, some may find it cluttered, others may find it homely. What cannot be disputed is the welcome and hospitality of the hosts, Gloria and Len. We enjoyed them immensely. Our room was charming - chintzy but in a homely way and very comfortable. Complimentary candies, cookies and brandy abound. Cheese and wine in early evening allowed guests to mingle and exchange stories of the day - a nice touch. Breakfast was a little unusual in that the selection was a little limited to the American palette - waffles with maple syrup and ice cream. However, it was very good and when in Rome ...... Overall, very nice stay if a little overpriced.

We stopped for a one night stop on our way to a weekend in the Finger Lakes in New York.
We check ourselves in with an envelope at the door with the key and well versed directions that gave us what the entire inn offered as well as restaurant options.
And because it was only for one night, for that reason we chose the coziest of the rooms available. The room was comfortable, but I would have enjoyed it more if the walls and the ceiling were not all papered in a dark busy design. Because the room was on the small size, it closed in the room.
Busy as the design was, the room was spotless and there were plenty of towels. The inn guest areas are large and airy, with plenty to do. There is a reading/music room and a porch area with a large screen television. We didn’t get to use the outdoor gardens and sitting areas because the weather was cool and damp.
The grounds are well landscaped and the Inn is away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Lee.
Breakfast was an eclectic mix of juice, coffee, stewed fruit with yogurt, cold asparagus, salmon cakes with dill sauce, banana bread, hard boiled eggs and a cheese coated vegetable frittata. A little of something for everyone.
We enjoyed our stay at the Applegate Inn in the Berkshires. It is peace and beautiful, but close enough to all the events that go on in the Massachusetts Berkshires.
