Owner description: A day at The Mount is an opportunity to experience the beauty and splendor of Edith Wharton’s beloved country estate. We offer guided tours of the house and gardens, a Backstairs Tour, and our popular Ghost Tour. There are no velvet ropes and stanchions, instead we invite our visitors to sit and interact with the rooms. Interpretive exhibits throughout the house explore Wharton’s life, her humanitarian efforts, literary legacy, and lives of the servants. In addition to being a house with a story to tell, we are also a cultural center, presenting lectures, dramatic readings, theater, music, storytelling, workshops, outdoor sculpture, films, and literary panels.

Beautiful grounds and a a peek into a lifestyle known to very few people. Also gives you a little bit of a different view of The War. But if you read some of her quotes, you may find, as I did, that you would prefer staying/visiting here to actually meeting the owner of the place. This is a lady who apparently inherited a bundle. She complained that her fund raising activities tired her out and that the war was really (in not so many words) taking the fun out of her life. Get past that kind of nonsense and you can enjoy a sense of an American "Upstairs/Downstairs" estate. Still being restored, it is not as impressive as the Newport Mansions or the various Vanderbilt Estates. But worth a stop if you are in the area.

We knew nothing about Edith Wharton but had been told that "the Mount" is beautiful. The tour really introduced us to a very interesting authoress and activist! The grounds are beautiful. On the weekend, you might want to call ahead to see if the hours/availability have changed due to weddings scheduled. Although it was interesting to see how the event was being set up, it did limit our ability to see all of the grounds and house in detail. Would have liked to go back into the House after the tour to explore further. All in all, though, a very good experience.

I am an Edith Wharton fan and this is a must see for others. Anyone though, will enjoy this stately mansion that takes you to another era. Beautiful gardens and serene view of the Berkshires.

I am still reeling over the beauty of this house and gardens. A victorian home done in simplicity, filled with light and symmetry, thoughtful speculation, unity with nature. . . I could go on, but the library took my breath away--books specially bound, color coded, and arranged to look like tapestries naturally selected for the room, intricate, carved paneling, usable desk. . . sigh, a room to write in, even though Wharton wrote every morning from 7-11 in bed :-) This house just emphasizes the brilliance and ingenuity of this remarkable woman.
