“Quaint and Comfortable Country Inn”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2012

I stayed here 20 years ago and remembered having a wonderful experience then. Lisa, Richard and Jane, still make the expereinece a true delight, as they did in the past. They serve a sumptuous breakfast, with all sorts of home made goodies and even brandy is available for a night cap in the parlor. There are many interesting sitting rooms, filled with shelves of books and antiques galore. The view from the outdoor patio is filled with trees and flowers, to make dining outside a wonderful experience.

I wish the bed could have been a little more comfortable to sleep, as I prefer a firmer mattress. I would have liked to open the windows at night and not use the A/C, as it was cool enough to have a fresh air breeze. There could have been a better wireless connection, except for one area in the dining room.

Their kind hopsitality makes the stay a pleasure, as well as the innkeepers desire to make your visit as comfortable as possible. They share stories, history of the area and places to visit. Richard is also an experienced traveler and author. He has his books displayed in the entry, which are also available to purchase. I would recommend the inn, as the charm, hospitality and value, make up for the issues I had, that can be amended.. A true delight!

I am not an experienced Bed and Breakfast traveler, but wanted to give it a try. This Inn is in Lenox, which is a town brimming with B+B options at all prices.
The family who owns and runs this inn are delightful and put forth a wonderful breakfast, but the single person who has to manage it all is at times a bit overwhelmed with taking care of cooking, coffee, clearing, and displaying all the breakfast items. I could be assured of many choices and a very social setting every morning.
My bed had an old mattress, sagging a bit, which was hard on my back. The room was located out of the way but a very loud screen door seemed to be used frequently. It had a private bath, but down the hall. This would not have been a good room for a large person or maybe even two people; it is very tiny. There are larger rooms and options upstairs.
There is an overall rustic feel - large cobweb in the corner of my bedroom, wobbly drawers, indoor-outdoor carpet, antique furniture that adds more of a museum/shop feel than organized decorating, removed hardware from door jams with holes painted over without patching, etc. This is not the upscale B+B that one might expect. But it is clean, adequate, walking distance to town, and very affordable. Many nooks for sitting and reading and a large library. Phone in room, but no plug/service, very poor internet connectivity,

Room on my confirmation was listed as " Room 1, Double Room". What we were assigned was a tiny room that was completely unacceptable and dissappointing. In particular: - Bathroom with a toilet that could only be utilized by sitting sideways. - An uncomfortable thin mattress that was underlain with a piece of plywood! -A bathroom door with a faulty knob mechanism such that the door could only be secured with a side bolt. - No air conditioner - a noisy ceiling fan that hindered sleep! - The windows were covered with dusty lace curtains. - No bathrobe though my confirmation indicated that one would be included. - A makeshift tiny "storage closet " that was cobbled from what appeared to be cabinet doors with hangars on a post. I can honestly say that these were some of the worse accomodations that I have ever experienced, and consequently one of the worst nights sleep and my wife have ever had. This B & B in general seems to need a through cleaning and better maintenance.

, Manager at Whistler's Inn, responded to this review, 13 July 2012
The guests booked a room at Whistler's Inn through a third party online. The same room was booked three times on the same day by the same third party online. If there is a discrepancy according to that third party, our facility is required to accommodate the guest with a comparable room as the room he or she originally booked if it is available. It is our management's opinion that the fault of not being able to book the room that one wants is that of the third party, not of the hotel itself.

In relationship to the quality of the guest room booked, Whistler's Inn is an old building that was built in the 1870's. There are large rooms and small rooms with a variation in pricing. Because of the nature of the house's architecture, some of our rooms might be very small with some odd angles due to the structure of the building. We cannot change such a structure due to the make and antiquity of the house.

Here's the bottom line: If you like your inns dilapidated and your innkeepers aloof, spend your money here. If you like paying for amenities advertised that you won't receive, spend your money here. If you believe a house full of antiques and a pinch of history can compensate for lousy hospitality and minimal upkeep, spend your money here. If you like beds and baths that haven't been updated since the '70s, spend your money here. If you don't, go elsewhere.

Staying at Whistler's Inn was one of the most beautiful experiences I've had in a very long time. It's has a very unique and a calm atmosphere.... close to nature and the interiors of this Inn is simply magnificent. From the carpet to the ceiling, everything in that place is priceless and looks authentically beautiful. A true treat for the eyes as well as the mind.
One can even hear the birds singing and communicating with each other.
If you are a writer or a nature person with great tastes for the best things in life, this place is perfect for you. It makes you feel 'Royal'

If you want to have a one of a kind experience, then go stay at the Whistler's Inn for a few days!!!

Located in the Berkshire mountains just a mile from Tanglewood, Whistlers Inn is a special treat for travelers looking for charming, historic ambiance and warm, welcoming service. The public rooms are stunning and decorated in period antiques. Porches surround the first floor on two sides and overlook the garden. A Steinway piano graces the parlor, and a wine decanter and glasses awaited guests when I arrived on a Friday evening. Lisa Mears, the inn manager and daughter of author Richard Mears and his artist wife Joan, greeted me at the door and gave me a quick tour of the house. My room was cozy with a private bath and a comfortable bed. The full breakfast was served in the spacious dining room; it was more than ample and guests were offered a choice of hot, freshly cooked breakfast entrees as well as fruit and juice, a large selection of pastries, and coffee and tea. Guests lingered after the meal to hear Richard's stories about the house and to watch a brief screening of the Travel Channel episode that was shot at the inn. Lisa directed me to the many literary and artistic sights in the area and made suggestions based on my interests. This trip I was traveling on business; I'll be back, next time with my husband and more free time to sightsee!

Well, it was a dark and snowy night, in the middle of a winter storm, in the middle of winter and we landed, all according to plan at the hidden entrance gothic, gingerbread storybook world of Whistler's Inn. After ringing, ringing, ringing and no one coming, we simply pushed the door easily open and let ourselves in. Deep caramels, crimson and indigo lights of treasured objects everywhere, crystal chandeliers, marble, dark wooden beams and book lined walls, scent of cedar, balsam and sage, wafting around us in the warmth, fusing shapes, colors and old world dimensions altogether embracing our senses. Still no one else but us to meet. We were so happy already and grateful to be there.

We readily unfurled the layers of winter coats off us, put our bags aside and proceded to peer through the collection of mysteries around us. We ventured unescorted, our imagination captured, through the secret victorian rooms and recesses with abandon. What pure delight we felt and so welcomed with the discovery of the hot herbal tea, digestifs and fresh baked pastries we noticed awaiting us in the dining room. Naturally, we just poured our tea, grabbed some sweets and plunked down into one or another of the overstuffed chairs to sit and gaze around us. That was happiness.

Moments later, a beautiful, young blond woman appeared soundlessly through the swinging kitchen door. With a wry and welcoming smile, she said softly, "Hi, do you have your room yet?" Well, she then produced a heavy key for some room upstairs, as I recall.

After thawing out from the cold and being sweetly entertained with music and her mellow, enquiring conversation, we retreated for the night. Our room was a darling, cozy, wallpapered refuge `

That was Lisa. That was twenty years ago.

She and her parents, Richard and Joan, all artists, have since become life long friends and their magical world, a yearly necessity.

Room Tip: Trust Richard, Joan or Lisa...for such information.
