“Perfect Anniversary Getaway”
Reviewed 12 October 2011

My husband and I just returned from having stayed at the Birchwood Inn in the MacDonald room. The Birchwood is the perfect New England Inn, with all the warm cozy touches, including a resident golden retriever, a porch with the rocking chairs, comfy drawing room with a fireplace and lots of books for perusing. The location is perfect too. Walk a couple of blocks to the heart of Lenox and its restaurants. There's even a hiking trail across the street. David and Ellen are perfect hosts as well - friendly, accommodating and helpful. We loved our room. It was in the separate cottage house and was quiet, super clean and very comfy - we loved all the pillows! Oh, and I cannot forget to mention the gourmet breakfasts! It was the best meal of our day, everyday. We make be making the Birchwood Inn our annual anniversary tradition.

Being an innkeeper is fun and rewarding when we have such happy guests! But why wait for your next anniversary? Breakfast is calling you...

We stayed in the Dana Room of the Birchwood Inn for three nights.
We liked:
Ellen the Innkeeper. She was warm and informative without being intrusive.
David, the chef. The breakfasts were delicious and served in a beautiful setting. There were enough tables that a party of two could sit alone, or join others, if desired.
Quinn, the dog. A beautiful, sweet golden retriever whose greatest pleasure was to receive a pat on the head.
Overall beauty of the Inn and beauty of Lenox.
The size and furnishings of the Dana room. It was a large, comfortable, beautiful room on the corner of the house. It had a comfortable king size bed, a sofa, an arm chair and an upholsterd lounge chair, a desk, and a big closet with plenty of good quality clothes hangers
A (very) few things we did not like:
Steep narrow stairs to our room. It was difficult to bring our luggage up and down.
Street noise. Our room was located next to a busy street, and the street noise was bothersome when the windows were open.
Although the bathroom was huge, there was not much space for two people to place toiletries on the pedestal sink.
In summary, this is the only B&B I would return to of the 25 I have stayed in. The beauty of the town, the inn, and the personnel accounts for my desire to return.

Room Tip: The website provides accurate pictures and descriptions of the rooms.

Thank you for letting us know what you enjoyed about Birchwood Inn as well as letting us know where we need to improve.
Unfortunately steep stairs are part and parcel of a 1766 home; however, David, our manager/concierge is available to assist with luggage most days before 5 pm and until 8:30 pm on Fridays.
There is very little traffic in Lenox, and the street noise on the Main Street side of the inn quiets to a trickle usually after 6 pm.
As to room to put personal toiletries in the Dana's bathroom, we are getting right on that so it will be there for all guests and for you when you return to Birchwood Inn.

We spent 3 weeks travelling around New England and booked this Inn for a 3 night stay. We couldn't fault the hospitality offered from Ellen and David, neither could we fault the breakfasts and the extra touches like afternoon tea/treat or goodies left in the 'pantry' for guests if they fancied a night time snack. The library was lovely and had a very homely feel, as did the dining room BUT our room left a lot to be desired. We booked a room in the Carriage House - it was small, very, very tired and had a strange repulsive smell! The same 3 large cobwebs on the ceiling remained there throughout our stay, the carpet needed replacing as it was badly stained and we were covered in cobwebs when we drew the curtains one evening (normally just used the blinds). The smell was so bad we had to buy an air freshener to try and mask the odour! The room desperately needed a makeover - throughout our trip in New England we stayed in far superior B&Bs at a fraction of the price we paid at Birchwood. Talking to other guests we weren't the only ones who felt the bedrooms needed updating!

As innkeepers who take great pride in our inn we deeply regret that our guests from the UK had an unpleasant experience. We wish that they had discussed this with us while they were here so that we could have tried to remedy the situation. Unfortunately, their stay coincided with the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, which caused considerable flooding, leaving a damp odor in its wake throughout many places in the area. It has taken several weeks for the dampness to dissipate The room in question is our most popular room, and we are sorry that it didn't suit our British guests. We do appreciate the time the guests took to point out certain issues.

Great accommodation . Central location for walking to shops and restaurants. Amazing home cooked breakfasts by the very talented owner. The French toast peach panani is to die for ! .
The Inn is full of character and dates back to 1766 . Rooms are very clean with huge comfortable beds and large en suite facilities.

The staff could not have been more helpful, giving advice on things to do and see in the surrounding areas. Well worth a visit.!

Room Tip: All the rooms that we saw looked good. The Inn is in a quiet location so no noise to disturb you at...

We've stayed at 4 B&B in Lenox and although all were nice this was the best of the lot. The room we stayed in was spacious, the A/C worked, the food was excellent, and the innkeepers helpful but not intrusive.

Innkeeper Ellen, her manager David, et al at the Birchwood Inn provide a quality experience in every respect. A welcoming environment...comfortable, attractive accommodations ...splendid gardens not to be missed ...truly a gourmet breakfast...a grand porch to relax, read and meet fellow guests ...unsurpassed attention to detail and a short walk to Lenox make the Birchwood the perfect home base to enjoy all the Berkshires have to offer. Guests of this stately Inn for over 17 years. The very best!

We spent a week at the Birchwood Inn in July 2010 and reviewed it in glowing terms. We spent another week at Birchwood in July 2011 and loved it even more. Location, accommodation, food, the little extras, Ellen Gutman Chenaux, the innkeeper, and her fine, helpful staff all added up to another wonderful week. In addition, we met some very nice people and we eagerly look forward to seeing them again in 2012 at Birchwood. Lenox and Tanglewood are in our blood. How nice it is to have Birchwood as our home away from home.
